France orders total evacuation of Cap Ferret peninsula as wildfire spreads

Authorities in south-western France have ordered the total evacuation of the Cap Ferret peninsula on the Atlantic coast by land and sea as an “intense and highly unpredictable” wildfire advances on one of the country’s best-known holiday spots.

Spain’s government has also taken the exceptional step of declaring a national emergency as a series of out-of-control wildfires ⁠threatened areas near Madrid, as extreme climate crisis-driven heat and drought persist in much of southern Europe.

The Cap Ferret fire had burned more than 10,000 hectares (24,700 acres), France’s interior minister, Laurent Nuñez, said on Friday, with 40,000 people already or about to be evacuated, including thousands of tourists from campsites and rental homes.

Boats began ferrying holidaymakers and residents off four piers on the peninsula early on Friday after the Gironde prefecture ordered its progressive evacuation, “village by village”, by sea or by the only road linking the area with the mainland.

Scientists say climate breakdown is triggering more frequent and more extreme weather events, evaporating soils and waterways, fuelling wildfires and leading to thousands of excess deaths. Europe is heating at about twice the global average rate.

Thousands of American Landmarks Face Significant Wildfire Threat

Introduction:

(Futurity) The first national assessment of its kind reveals an urgent and largely unplanned-for threat to irreplaceable cultural heritage.

When the Palisades Fire tore through Los Angeles in January 2025, it didn’t only destroy homes. It took the Will Rogers Ranch House—a beloved California landmark—with it. Six months later, the Dragon Bravo wildfire burned through Grand Canyon National Park and destroyed the Grand Canyon Lodge, originally built in 1927. Whether either landmark will ever be meaningfully restored remains uncertain.

A new study in Nature Scientific Reports suggests these losses are not anomalies, they are an early warning.

Researchers at UC Santa Barbara’s National Center for Ecological Analysis and Synthesis (NCEAS) have completed the first national-scale assessment of wildfire risk to American cultural heritage.

Of the 100,117 sites listed on the National Register of Historic Places, more than half face measurable wildfire exposure. For 3,446 places, that risk is severe.
