I Detest Billionaires: My Journey to Supporting One for Governor of California
By Jeff Cohen
May 4, 2026

Introduction:
(Common Dreams) As a progressive who watches too much television, when I see a Democratic candidate dominating the TV air war with ubiquitous campaign ads, I usually know that’s a Democrat I should oppose—the one being lavishly funded by wealthy corporate interests. And the ads are usually vapid, empty.

Living in California these past months, I’ve had to adjust my normal mindset. Because the Democrat running for governor who was dominating the airwaves had put out one substantive ad after another—calling for taxing the wealthy, breaking up utility monopolies, standing up to Big Oil. Each ad could have been put out by Bernie Sanders. Like the ad featuring Rep. Ro Khanna about taking on the “big insurance companies” to pass universal “single-payer healthcare” for California.

Or the candidate’s video message denouncing AIPAC (“they’re attacking progressive Democrats every chance they get”) and the Democratic Party establishment for “not talking more forcefully” against the Iran war.

The candidate putting out all these wonderfully progressive ads is billionaire Tom Steyer, a former hedge fund manager turned environmental advocate, now self-funding his campaign to the tune of $130 million. So far.
Conclusion:
If Steyer is elected, will he prove to be the effective “class traitor” that most Californians need him to be—a governor who stands up to corporate greed and power? Though not as rich as Steyer, President Franklin Roosevelt certainly provides a role model as someone willing to fight “the economic royalists” he knew so well in order to uplift working people.

California Governor Primary Survey USA Polling Results
May 1 , 2026

Introduction:
(Survey USA) Three weeks ago, SurveyUSA's exclusive polling for KGTV News 10 and the San Diego Union Tribune, conducted as Eric Swalwell's campaign was collapsing, showed Democrat Tom Steyer and Republican Steve Hilton advancing to the general election in November, with all other candidates trailing well behind them.

Today, as ballots begin to be mailed, with both Swalwell and Betty Yee out of the race, and amidst much movement among the other candidates, Steyer and Hilton still finish in the first two positions, though swapping places, with Hilton now first, taking 20%, up from 18%, and Steyer second, taking 18%, down from 21%.

Where is everyone else?
• The other Republican in the race, Chad Bianco, finishes third with 12%, up from 8%.

• Xavier Becerra climbs 6 points, from 4% to 10%, and finishes fourth. If Becerra continues to climb and Steyer continues to fall, it is possible that Becerra and Hilton both advance to the general election – but it also remains possible that Bianco and Hilton both advance, pitting the two Republicans against each other in the November election.

• Katie Porter, at 8% three weeks ago, remains at 8% today, in fifth place.

• Matt Mahan, at 4% three weeks ago, is at 7% today, finishing sixth.

• Antonio Villaraigosa, at 5% once again, is seventh.

• Tony Thurmond is at 2%, nominally up from 1%.

• 17% of voters tell SurveyUSA they are undecided.

Indiana Primary Election Results
May 5, 2026

Introduction:
(USA Today) Indiana's May 5, 2026 primaries saw Trump-backed challengers defeat most GOP incumbents who voted against his mid decade redistricting plan, while the state's U.S. House primaries produced the expected Republican and Democratic nominees across all nine districts.

Key points:
Indiana's state legislature rejected a mid decade redistricting bill in December 2025, becoming the first state to do so.

President Donald Trump endorsed challengers to GOP lawmakers who opposed the redistricting plan, and those challengers won in the May 5 primary.
Incumbent state senators defeated include Daniel Dernulc (lost 75.1%–23% to Trevor de Vries) and Linda Rogers (lost 58.9%–41.1% to Brian Schmutzler).

Only state Sen. Greg Goode (who voted against the redistricting bill) retained his seat, beating Brenda Wilson 53.5% to 36.1%; the race in Senate District 23 remained tied at 50% 50% as of election night

I still think democrats have the odds on their side to regain the house. Probably 225-227 with all the republican bullshit...It would probably be 235 or so in a fair election.

In Alaska, Senate Republican Is Accused of Trying to Cover His Tracks as He Falls Behind in Polls
By Tom Boggioni
May 11, 2026

Introduction:
(Raw Story) Republican Sen. Dan Sullivan of Alaska is frantically attempting to undo damage from his party-line votes gutting provisions of the Affordable Care Act — voting twice with Senate Democrats on health provisions in what political analysts characterize as too little, too late damage control as he falls behind in his re-election bid.

According to reporting from The Hill, Sullivan voted for an amendment sponsored by Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY), opposing any funding bill that failed to lower out-of-pocket healthcare costs. He also voted for another amendment sponsored by Sen. Jon Ossoff (D-GA) addressing insurers delaying or denying care.

However, Alaska political analyst John-Henry Heckendorn suggested the strategic pivot is unlikely to repair the political damage from Sullivan's consistent party-line voting on healthcare issues.

"Given how many times he has voted for legislation or amendments that would either reduce healthcare subsidies for Alaskans or otherwise increase healthcare costs, the damage has largely been done," Heckendorn told The Hill's Joseph Choi.
