Iran hits Gulf refineries as Trump warns U.S. will attack Iranian bridges, power plants

Source: NPR
Blasts and sirens rang out across Israel, Kuwait, the United Arab Emirates and Saudi Arabia on Friday as air defense systems tried to stave off Iranian drones and missiles. At least two refineries were set on fire by drone attacks or falling debris. The strikes came as President Trump repeated threats to Iran's leadership on Day 35 of the war.

The military "hasn't even started destroying what's left in Iran," Trump posted late Thursday on social media. "Bridges next, then Electric Power Plants!"

He added: "New Regime leadership knows what has to be done, and has to be done, FAST!"

Second US Combat Plane Crashes Near Hormuz After Iran Shootdown: Report

Source: Newsweek
A second U.S. Air Force combat aircraft crashed Friday in the Persian Gulf region, with the lone pilot safely rescued, two U.S. officials told the New York Times.

The officials said the A‑10 Warthog went down near the Strait of Hormuz around the same time an F‑15E Strike Eagle was shot down over Iran, an incident in which one crew member was rescued and search teams are still looking for a second airman.

Department of Defense officials did not immediately return a message from Newsweek seeking additional details on Friday.

Iran's top university bombed as US, Israel intensify attacks; 34 killed

By Al Jazeera Staff

6 Apr 2026
At least 34 people have been killed, including six children, as the United States and Israel carried out massive attacks across Iran, targeting a top university as well as residential areas, after US President Donald Trump set a Tuesday deadline for Tehran to fully reopen the Strait of Hormuz or face strikes on its power plants and bridges.

The Fars news agency reported on Monday that an air attack killed 23 people, including four girls and two boys aged below 10 years, in Tehran province's Baharestan County.

At least five people were killed in an attack on a residential building in the city of Qom, according to the political and security deputy of the governor, Morteza Heydari. Six others were killed in Bandar-e Lengeh, in southern Iran, authorities said.

At least a dozen cities were hit across Iran, including Bandar Abbas, Ahvaz, Mahshahr, Shiraz, Isfahan and Karaj. ... US-Israeli strikes also hit Sharif University in Tehran, one of Iran's leading scientific universities, often compared with the US's Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). Al Jazeera's Tohid Asadi, reporting from Tehran, said the facility was severely hit, with extensive damage reported in the compound's mosque and laboratories.

Trump says Iran could be "taken out" in one night, and that night "might" be Tuesday

President Donald Trump said in a press conference Monday that Iran could be “taken out” in one night and said that night “might” be Tuesday evening.

“The entire country could be taken out in one night, and that night might be tomorrow night,” the president said.

Trump has warned repeatedly that the US could strike power plants, bridges and other infrastructure in Iran if Tehran fails to make a deal or reopen the Strait of Hormuz, a critical oil thoroughfare. Over the weekend, he said Iran had until Tuesday at 8 p.m. ET to make a deal.

Americans Sharply Divided Along Political Lines When It Comes To Iran War Support: I&I/TIPP Poll
By Terry Jones
April 6, 2026

Introduction:
(Issues & Insights) As President Trump gears up to put even more pressure on what remains of Iran’s regime, do Americans support the Iran war? According to the latest I&I/TIPP Poll, nearly half of all Americans do, but an equal share don’t, with political affiliation seemingly the deciding factor in whether one supports or opposes the conflict.

I&I/TIPP’s national online poll of 1,464 voters was taken from March 31 to April 2, and has a margin of error of +/-2.7 percentage points.

The public opinion survey asked participants three questions about the Iran war, which has now lasted just over a month. The first question: “Do you support or oppose the United States military action against Iran?”

Overall, opinion was sharply and evenly divided, with 45% saying they either support it “strongly” (25%) or “somewhat” (21%), while 45% also said they opposed it either “strongly” (29%) or “somewhat” (16%). Another 10% were unsure.

caltrek’s comment: It should be noted that other polls show a much stronger opposition to the war:

On the War in Iran, the White House Confronts Cracks in the Republican Façade
By Steve Benen
April 6, 2026

Introduction:
(MSNBC) During a recent appearance on Fox News, Donald Trump, unprompted, decided to start whining about Republican Sen. Lisa Murkowski of Alaska.

“She’s a very difficult person,” the president said, adding that the senator is also a “very terrible person, to be honest with you.”

What prompted Trump to lash out at a senator from his own party, whose support he’ll need in the coming weeks and months? Shortly before his on-air comments, The New York Times reported the Alaskan had begun drafting legislation that would force lawmakers to vote for the first time on whether to authorize the war in Iran. From the article:

Senator Lisa Murkowski of Alaska is working with a group of senators on a formal authorization for the use of military force against Iran, but has yet to introduce the resolution, a spokesman confirmed on Thursday. Such a measure would have to receive a swift vote in both chambers of Congress and would be all but certain to generate a politically charged debate just months before the midterm elections on a war that polls show is unpopular.

Ms. Murkowski described the move on Thursday as an act of desperation to try to put some parameters around the operation as the Trump administration refuses to provide answers to Congress about its objectives, cost and timeline, and has boxed lawmakers out of its decision-making on the conflict.
The article also mentions skepticism about the war, or at least about the lack of proper congressional consultation, as expressed by Republican Senator John Curtis of Utah and Republican Senator Rand Paul of Kentucky.

'A whole civilization will die tonight': Trump threatens Iran

Chantal Da Silva

10m ago / 8:16 AM EDT

President Donald Trump has just threatened that "a whole civilization will die tonight" if a deal with Iran is not reached and the Strait of Hormuz is not reopened by his deadline at 8 p.m. ET.

"A whole civilization will die tonight, never to be brought back again," Trump said in a post on his Truth Social platform. "I don’t want that to happen, but it probably will," Trump said, adding: "However, now that we have Complete and Total Regime Change, where different, smarter, and less radicalized minds prevail, maybe something revolutionarily wonderful can happen, WHO KNOWS?"

The president said the world would "find out tonight" in what he described as "one of the most important moments in the long and complex history of the World."
