Call of Duty co-creator Vince Zampella dies in California car crash

22 December 2025

Vince Zampella, who co-created the widely popular video game series Call of Duty, has died in a car crash in California, aged 55.

Zampella's death was confirmed by Electronic Arts, which owns Respawn Entertainment, a game studio he co-founded.

The influential video game developer was travelling in a Ferrari with another person, when it crashed and caught fire on a highway in Los Angeles on Sunday.

"This is an unimaginable loss, and our hearts are with Vince's family, his loved ones, and all those touched by his work," a spokesperson for Electronic Arts told the BBC.

Officials said the person on the vehicle's passenger seat was ejected while the driver remained trapped. It is unclear if Zampella was driving the car and who the other person inside was.

Brigitte Bardot, French screen legend, dies aged 91

Emmanuel Macron leads tributes to celebrated sex symbol who later embraced animal rights activism and an increasingly controversial political stance

Sun 28 Dec 2025 11.50 GMT

Tributes have been paid to Brigitte Bardot, the French actor and singer who became an international sex symbol before turning her back on the film industry and embracing the cause of animal rights activism, who has died aged 91.

The French president, Emmanuel Macron, wrote on social media that Bardot had “embodied a life of freedom” and “universal brilliance”. France was mourning “a legend of the century”, he said.

Jordan Bardella, the president of Marine Le Pen’s far-right National Rally party (RN), which Bardot supported, wrote: “Brigitte Bardot was a woman of heart, conviction and character. An ardent patriot, devoted to animals that she protected throughout her life, she embodied a whole French era, but also above all a certain idea of courage and freedom.”

Le Pen, whom Bardot once described as “the Joan of Arc of the 21st century”, wrote on social media that Bardot was “exceptional for her talent, courage, frankness and beauty”. “She was incredibly French,” she said. “Free, indomitable, whole. She will be hugely missed.”

Renowned scientist who studied distant planets fatally shot at his home near LA

Fri 20 Feb 2026 23.24 GMT

A renowned California Institute of Technology (Caltech) scientist who studied distant planets and other areas of astronomy for decades was recently shot to death at his home in a rural community outside Los Angeles, authorities said.

Carl Grillmair, 67, died from a bullet wound to the torso on Monday in Llano, an unincorporated community in the Antelope Valley, according to information from the LA county medical examiner’s office. The county sheriff’s department said it had arrested a suspect in Grillmair’s slaying, identifying him as 29-year-old Freddy Snyder.

Snyder faces a count of murder in connection with Grillmair’s death, along with charges of carjacking and burglary pertaining to other cases. He remained in custody on Friday.

[...]

Grillmair’s curriculum vitae listed more than four decades of experience in his field, including hundreds of publications, contributed papers and abstracts – as well as an exceptional scientific achievement medal from Nasa.

“He’s irreplaceable,” Sergio Fajardo-Acosta, who worked alongside Grillmair at Caltech for 26 years, said in an interview on Friday. “I will miss him very personally, and I will miss him as a colleague as well.”

Robert Mueller, Former FBI Director Who Led Trump Investigation, Dies at 81
By David Cohen
March 21, 2026

Introduction:
(Politico) Robert Mueller, the special counsel whose investigation of President Donald Trump kept America transfixed for two years, died Friday night, according to a family statement provided to the Associated Press. He was 81.

In August 2025, his family disclosed to The New York Times that Mueller had been “diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease in the summer of 2021,” and that he retired both from teaching and his law practice because of his escalating health issues.

During Trump’s first term, the nation waited on Mueller and watched, eager to see whether its president or his campaign staff would be found to have conspired with a foreign power to get himself elected. Ultimately, Mueller offered a detailed report that accused Trump of misbehavior and possibly of obstructing justice, but which never came out and said the president had broken the law.

“Russia’s actions were a threat to America’s democracy. It was critical that they be investigated and understood,” he wrote in 2020 in defense of his investigation.

Mueller had a long record of public service before becoming a special counsel for the Department of Justice in 2017, including four years in the Marines during the Vietnam War and 12 years as director of the FBI.
