Trump names envoy to Greenland, sparking fresh row with Denmark
2 hours ago
Donald Trump has sparked a renewed disagreement with Denmark after appointing a special envoy to Greenland, the Arctic island he has said he would like to annex.
Trump announced on Sunday that Jeff Landry, the Republican governor of Louisiana, would become the US's special envoy to Greenland, a semi-autonomous part of the Kingdom of Denmark.
Writing on social media, the US president said Landry understood how "essential Greenland is to our national security" and would advance US interests.
Greenland's prime minister said the island must "decide our own future" and its "territorial integrity must be respected".
The move angered Copenhagen, which will call the US ambassador for "an explanation".

Danish PM tells Trump to stop 'threats' against Greenland
Source: BBC
Denmark's prime minister has told Donald Trump to "stop the threats" about taking over Greenland.
Mette Frederiksen said "it makes absolutely no sense to talk about the need for the United States to take over Greenland", adding: "The US has no right to annex any of the three nations in the Danish kingdom".
Her remarks come after Katie Miller - the wife of one of Trump's aides, Stephen Miller - tweeted a map of Greenland in the colours of the American flag alongside the word "SOON".
In her statement, posted on the Danish government website, Frederiksen said she was addressing the US "very directly".
She said Denmark - "and thus Greenland" - was a Nato member and covered by the alliance's security guarantee. Denmark already had a defence agreement with the US that gave it access to Greenland, she said, and Denmark had upped its investment in security in the Arctic region.

Britain won’t let US use its bases to attack Greenland, says John Healey
9 Jan 2026, 19:26
There is “no question” of British bases being used to support US military action against Greenland, the Defence Secretary has said.
On a visit to Kyiv, John Healey rejected the prospect of UK support for an attack on Greenland, saying the UK would only act “on a fully legal basis”.
Asked whether he would allow British bases, personnel or equipment to be used to support US action against Greenland, Mr Healey said: “There’s no question of that.
“Greenland and Denmark are part of Nato, we and the US are part of that alliance with treaty obligations.
“And so far as the UK’s support for any nation with any military action, we will do so if the purpose is correct and if the legal basis is sound.”

Re: Greenland News and Discussions
If you don't like Trump, you should support him ordering an invasion of Greenland. The backlash will be furious and immediate that it will cripple his ability to govern and he will probably be removed from office in months.
