Facial recognition and biometric technologies

Post by wjfox »

A rather controversial technology, based on deep learning and neural networks - let's have a thread on it. We can include related technologies.

Eurostar has just begun using facial recognition for border checks:

Amazon is bringing its palm-based payments to all Whole Foods Market stores

July 20, 2023 9:24 AM

You won't have much trouble paying with your palm at the grocery store in the near future. Amazon now says it's bringing its One palm recognition technology to all Whole Foods Market stores in the US by the end of the year. As before, you can hover your palm over a reader to pay for your shopping or make use of your Prime perks. You won't have to pull out your phone or wallet if you've already signed up online.

Home Office secretly backs facial recognition technology to curb shoplifting

Covert government strategy to install electronic surveillance in shops raises issues around bias and data, and contrasts sharply with the EU ban to keep AI out of public spaces

Sat 29 Jul 2023 17.11 BST

Home Office officials have drawn up secret plans to lobby the independent privacy regulator in an attempt to push the rollout of controversial facial recognition technology into high street shops and supermarkets, internal government minutes seen by the Observer reveal.

The covert strategy was agreed during a closed-door meeting on 8 March between policing minister Chris Philp, senior Home Office officials and the private firm Facewatch, whose facial recognition cameras have provoked fierce opposition after being installed in shops.

In a development that ignores critics who claim the technology breaches human rights and is biased, particularly against darker-skinned people, minutes of the meeting appear to show Home Office officials agreeing to write to the Information Commissioner’s Office (ICO) advocating the merits of facial recognition technology in tackling “retail crime”.

Mark Johnson, advocacy manager of the campaign group Big Brother Watch, said: “The Home Office must urgently answer questions about this meeting, which appears to have led officials to lean on the ICO in order to favour a firm that sells highly invasive facial recognition technology.

“Government ministers should strive to protect human rights, not cosy up to private companies whose products pose serious threats to civil liberties in the UK.”

Starmer plan to expand facial recognition technology after far-right riots condemned by charities

Charities and human rights organisations have called on Sir Keir Starmer to reverse a planned expansion of the use of facial recognition technology following far-right riots across England and Northern Ireland.

Amnesty International, Privacy International and Big Brother Watch are among the 27 campaign groups that have signed a letter to the prime minister to voice their “serious concerns” over facial recognition surveillance.

In a speech following the Southport riot on 1 August, Sir Keir spoke of a national team across police forces that would tackle violent disorder with beefed-up resources.

These included shared intelligence, wider deployment of facial recognition technology and use of criminal behaviour orders to restrict people’s movements.

In their letter, the human rights organisations backed Sir Keir to take “robust action to stop the violence, protect our communities and bring those responsible for this criminal behaviour to justice”, but said they were worried about the increased use of facial recognition technology and how this could also impact the communities they represent.

Met Police gets first permanent facial recognition cameras in London, sparking fears of 'dystopian nightmare'

24 March 2025

Police are setting up London's first permanent facial recognition cameras, despite privacy fears.

The live facial recognition (LFR) cameras, which are intended to make fighting crime easier by identifying criminal suspects faster, will be set up in Croydon, in south London.

Police have already been using mobile facial recognition cameras in vans, which can be deployed anywhere in the city. Hundreds of suspects are said to have been arrested during the years the vans have been running.

The technology works by scanning faces and matching them to a database of criminals. Anyone who is not a match is deleted.

The new cameras will be attached to lampposts or buildings and will only run when officers are available to match scans on the database.

Thousands of newly obtained documents show that Clearview AI’s founders always intended to target immigrants and the political left. Now their digital dragnet is in the hands of the Trump administration.

Plus, the Online Safety Act just came into force, meaning you're now prompted by a government age verification whenever you view NSFW materials (even for relatively harmless stuff on Reddit, etc). This involves literally appearing on camera and letting them digitally record your face. There's a massive backlash happening right now –– people refusing to comply, using VPNs, etc. Yet another step towards dystopia.

Sainsbury's to trial facial recognition to catch shoplifters

2 September 2025

Sainsbury's is planning to introduce facial recognition technology across its supermarkets in a bid to identify shoplifters.

The UK's second largest supermarket has begun an eight-week trial in two stores as part of a crackdown on the crime, which has increased sharply in recent years.

"The retail sector is at a crossroads, facing rising abuse, anti-social behaviour and violence," said Sainsbury's chief executive Simon Roberts. "We must put safety first."

However, privacy campaigners described the project as "deeply disproportionate and chilling", urging the supermarket chain to abandon its plans.

Sainsbury's is working with facial recognition business Facewatch and will start using the technology this week at one shop in London and another in Bath ahead of a potential nationwide roll out.

Police to ramp up use of 'out-of-control' facial recognition technology amid privacy warnings

Thursday 4 December 2025

The use of controversial facial recognition technology will be ramped up by police under government plans.

Ministers are launching a 10-week consultation asking for views on how the tech should be regulated to protect people's privacy.

The government also plans to create a new regulator overseeing facial recognition, as well as biometrics and other tools.

The Home Office spent £12.6m on facial recognition last year, and policing minister Sarah Jones said its capabilities offer the "biggest breakthrough for catching criminals since DNA matching".

But civil liberties campaigners say its use is "out of control", and turning Britain "into an open prison with surveillance of the general population".

'Impossible' to travel in London in future without being scanned by facial recognition, court told

It will be “impossible” for Londoners to travel without being scanned by facial recognition unless police use of the technology is properly restricted, the High Court has been told.

The Metropolitan Police is facing legal action over its use of live facial recognition (LFR), brought by a youth worker who was misidentified by the technology and the director of a civil liberties campaign group.

Shaun Thompson, who volunteers with young people affected by violence, and Silkie Carlo, from Big Brother Watch, are concerned that facial recognition could be used arbitrarily or in a discriminatory way.

Lawyers for the pair had their challenge heard at the High Court after Home Secretary Shabana Mahmood defended her plans to extend facial recognition to police forces across England and Wales, despite a consultation on its use not being complete.

[...]

Dan Squires KC, for Mr Thompson and Ms Carlo, told the hearing on Tuesday that police use of the technology is increasing “exponentially”.

British Transport Police begins Live Facial Recognition trial at London stations

Live facial recognition technology has been deployed at London Bridge station as part of a six-month pilot launched by British Transport Police.

The force said the trial will test how the technology operates in a “railway setting” and follows months of planning and research aimed at improving public safety.

The operation began at London Bridge on Tuesday afternoon, with details of future LFR deployments to be published online in advance.

It will be deployed across several London stations.
