Tesla is seeking permits to offer ride-hail services at Silicon Valley airports

Tesla has asked the San Francisco, San Jose, and Oakland airports about acquiring permits to operate a ride-hailing service at each location, according to Politico.

Tesla appears to have contacted each airport right around the time it started up a nascent charter service in California in late July. In the case of the San Francisco and Oakland airports, representatives told the outlet that they had been contacted, but had yet to meet with Tesla. The San Jose airport spokesperson confirmed no application for a permit had been filed and that Tesla had asked about the permit process.

Tesla currently lacks the proper permits to run a true ride-hail service, let alone a robotaxi network, in California. Instead, it’s operating a more-limited charter service. Those are not supposed to involve any autonomous vehicle operations, though videos of the rides have shown that the company’s drivers are using its Full Self-Driving (Supervised) software on the rides being offered. Tesla’s FSD (Supervised) is an advanced driver assistance system with some automated driving features that requires the driver to pay attention.

Waymo is getting into the corporate travel business

Waymo’s ever-expanding robotaxi aspirations have spread to the corporate world.

The Alphabet-owned self-driving vehicle unit has launched “Waymo for Business,” a new service designed for companies to set up accounts so their employees can access robotaxis in cities like Los Angeles, Phoenix, and San Francisco.

Waymo announced Wednesday in a blog post it is inviting organizations to sign up for Waymo for Business. The new a service will let businesses subsidize their employees’ rides or purchase promo codes in bulk, which can be handed out to clients, customers, or workers. The Waymo for Business rides will cost the same as its regular service.

One of Waymo’s first customers is Carvana, the Phoenix-based online used car marketplace.

Tesla FSD 14 Next Week

Elon said that Tesla FSD Version 14.0 goes into early wide release next week, then 14.1 about 2 weeks later and finally 14.2.

The car will feel almost like it is sentient being by 14.2.

This will have ten times the parameters of FSD 13.

It is supposed to be 2-3 times safer than human driving.

If the 2-3 times safer than human driving materializes, then the safety monitor and safety drivers are removed and there is wide release with a lot of cars in many cities.

Self-driving trucks startup Einride raises $100M

Einride, the Swedish startup known for its unusual-looking electric and autonomous pods that are designed to carry freight, said Wednesday it has raised $100 million from several new and existing investors, including its largest shareholder, EQT Ventures.

The raise included an undisclosed strategic investment from quantum computing company IonQ. Neither Einride, nor its investors, disclosed the company’s post-money valuation.

The funding comes as Einride adjusts to a new CEO and tries to scale its three business products: electric big rigs, autonomous pod-like trucks that navigate fixed routes, and planning software designed for shippers. Einride CEO Roozbeh Charli said the funding would allow the company to grow with its customer base and accelerate the deployment of its autonomous freight technology.

The company, which was founded in 2016, started in Sweden with a mission to disrupt the freight industry — first with electric trucks, then with electric autonomous pods, which are purpose-built without a steering wheel or pedals for self-driving.

Einride has expanded beyond Sweden and operates a fleet of heavy-duty electric trucks in Europe, North America, and the UAE, for companies like PepsiCo, Carlsberg Sweden, and DP World. The company has made some inroads with its autonomous pod-like trucks with customers Apotea in Sweden and GE Appliances in the United States.
