Torquey mid-drive ebike motor powers Mahle's entry into eMTB world
By Paul Ridden
June 15, 2025
Germany's Mahle is reported to be one of the world's largest manufacturers of automotive components. But the company also makes ebike motors and has now launched into the eMTB space with a mid-drive claimed to be "one of the most powerful systems on the market."

The M40 launches as the first of a new M series offerings from Mahle SmartBike Systems, which joins the company's lightweight X20, X30 an XS line of hub drives. It's been developed specifically for electric mountain bikes (eMTB) and electric trekkers.

"Thanks to state-of-the-art technologies, precision engineering and intelligent connectivity, the M40 sets new standards in the category of full-power mid-motors," said Jochen Sommer, the brand's Managing Director.

5-lb mini motor drive turns bike into 750-W ebike in mere seconds
By C.C. Weiss
June 18, 2025
Eurobike 2025 is really shaping up to be the ultimate launchpad for tiny ebike motors. We've already seen the high-torquing TQ HPR60 and the magnetically geared Star Union MGM that will be pitched at bicycle manufacturers around the globe, and now we have an even tinier motor that consumers can buy directly. The all-new Kamingo is a split-component add-on e-drive that instantly turns a standard bicycle into a pedal-assist ebike. In fact, it's designed for such quick, seamless plug-and -play, riders can swap it in and out mid-ride.

As ebikes have grown in popularity so, too, has the market of add-on electric drives. Each of these products turns the classic pedal bicycle into a power-assisted ebike, but they use different mechanisms and designs to do so. We've seen everything from swappable electrified wheels, to clamp-down rim spinners, to snap-on rotor runners, right up to bolt-on multi-cog mid-drives.

Sub-$2,000 adventure e-moto lets you carry spare batteries on the go
By Utkarsh Sood

Tesla is not usually a company that's associated with two wheels. But here’s a one-off where it is, kind of – with ex-Tesla engineers behind a new motorcycle called the Emara ADV. The electric moto comes from a relatively new company called Zeno from Bangalore, India.

India’s already a country that seems to be taking the electric revolution pretty seriously, with much of the country’s next-gen automotive innovation focused on going electric. So, the Emara ADV does fit rather well within the broader industry narrative.

Zeno is headed by Michael Spencer, who contributed to the success of the Model 3 and Model Y and even played a role in Tesla's famed Supercharger network. Therefore, it's safe to assume that the accumulated knowledge of electric vehicle production and its scalability will be put to good use for Zeno.

6-kW mid-drive ebike promises a bonkers 50 mph
By Abhimanyu Ghoshal
June 22, 2025
https://newatlas.com/bicycles/nireeka-s ... ber-ebike/
Dubai-based Nireeka has been making absolutely outrageous ebikes for a few years now, and its latest performance-focused creation packs so much power it really should come with a statutory warning or three.

The Spectrx features a 6-kW mid-drive motor that puts down 206 lb.ft (280 Nm) of torque, mated to a distinctive lightweight carbon fiber frame. The company says this combination allows for a thrilling top speed of 50 mph (80 km/h), making it the quickest ebike in Nireeka's history – though it's not the fastest ebike we've seen.

The monocoque frame, with its angular design, helps keep the bike's overall weight down to just 66 lb (30 kg) on the Plus variant; the Fat version with 26 x 4 inch tires comes in at 79 lb (36 kg) – these are just a bit more than the brand's other models that make 1/6th the power.

Honda aims to deliver with 4-wheel e-cargo hauler
By Paul Ridden
June 22, 2025
https://newatlas.com/urban-transport/ho ... -delivery/
For many delivery riders, a supersized cargo box worn like a backpack and a powerful ebike are all that's needed to keep goods moving in the city. Multiple large packages require bigger thinking, as seen in Honda's upcoming Fastport eQuad.

No, it's not as cute as Honda's electric city car, but it can go where cars and vans can't – such as bike lanes (where regulations allow). The four-wheeled last-mile package delivery solution relies on pedal power that's assisted by the onboard motor up to 12 mph (20 km/h), and a Honda Mobile Power Pack swappable battery that's reckoned good for 23 miles (37 km) fully loaded.
Image
That per-charge range figure is for the larger of the two available configurations – which is rated to haul payloads up to 650 lb (295 kg) in total out back, within a box measuring 89 x 60 x 47.9 in (238.9 x 152.5 x 121.6 cm). The range for the small box version – which has a payload capacity of 320 lb (145 kg) for its 75 x 57.5 x 39.4-in (190.5 x 146 x 97.5-cm) cargo box – is still being determined at time of writing.

Sporty electric unicycle fuels your urban adventure at more than 40 mph
By Paul Ridden
June 24, 2025

Though Shenzhen-based e-mobility outfit InMotion does have a bunch of two-wheeled transport solutions in its webshop, the company is probably best known for its championing of monowheel adventuring. Now a new flagship e-unicycle is ready to conquer the city.

"Mobility isn't just about going from point A to point B – it's about how you feel along the way," said the company. "With the V12S, we wanted to deliver a whole new level of riding freedom – not just in speed, but in comfort, expression, and above all, confidence in your safety."

Even with training wheels in play, I felt that 12 mph was plenty fast for a personal transporter between my feet – though as confidence and skills grow, the desire for more thrilling speeds would grow too. The latest addition the InMotion's range will certainly get the adrenaline pumping with a top speed of 43.5 mph (70 km/h).

Bosch-powered cargo ebike can haul four kids around town in comfort
By Paul Ridden
June 29, 2025
Dutch e-mobility outfit Urban Arrow has announced the US launch of its latest front-loader cargo ebike, one that the company says is a viable alternative to the family's second car for the school run or weekly shop.

Last year, Amsterdam-based electric cargo bike maker Urban Arrow boosted battery and torque for its Bosch-driven Family series of front-loaders. The Pro flavor of the FamilyNext model bumps up the torque again, with 85 Nm (62.6 lb.ft) available to help with the haul.

The mid-drive Bosch Smart System Cargo Line Gen4 motor provides pedal-assist over four power levels up to 20 mph (25 km/h in Europe), and sports adaptive rider support (400%) for more help with heavy loads, going up hills or dealing with headwinds.

Orbea sows the seeds of adventure with Bosch-powered urban explorer
By Paul Ridden
July 08, 2025
https://newatlas.com/bicycles/orbea-mug ... ain-ebike/
When you feel like wandering in the wilderness – or just through the cobbled streets of old town – and need a capable Bosch-powered ride to fuel your adventure, Orbea has a premium all-terrain solution in its new Muga urban ebike.

Orbea is reported to be Spain's largest bike manufacturer, and has been making two-wheelers since the 1930s – though it began almost 100 years earlier as a firearms maker.

The founding family got in a spot of financial bother in the late 1960s and the company's employees formed a cooperative to take ownership of Orbea. Shortly after this, it became part of a large Basque-based federation of worker cooperatives.

The company's first ebike was launched at Madrid's Unibike trade show in 2016, and the Muga urban explorer is the latest in a premium line that includes the Rise, Wild and Diem models.

Best-selling e-trike in the US gets more power, more range
By Paul Ridden
July 12, 2025

A couple of years ago, Arizona's Lectric built on its success in the low-cost ebike space by launching a model geared towards folks looking for more stability. Now the XP Trike has been updated with a more powerful motor and a bigger battery.

"When we launched the XP Trike two years ago, we knew our riding community would like it since it was the most requested model at the time, but we had no idea how many riders across America would totally dig it," said Lectric co-founder and CEO Levi Conlow in a press statement.

"Not only did it make Lectric the number one seller of electric trikes in the US, but it also accounted for over 80% of all adult tricycle sales, and it showed us how important the stability and comfort of three wheels is. We’re excited to now give even more people access to that fun with improved features – and without a price increase."

LiveWire just surprised everyone by revealing two lightweight e-motos
By Utkarsh Sood
July 14, 2025
https://newatlas.com/motorcycles/livewi ... -concepts/
Harley-Davidson’s boardroom troubles are there for everyone to see. Its all-electric spinoff, LiveWire, has been enduring losses for a while now, too. But that hasn’t stopped the brand from coming up with an all-new low-powered electric motorcycle platform.

It was at Harley-Davidson’s Homecoming festival in Milwaukee that LiveWire unveiled two new concept motorcycles. The idea is simple – to make electric motorcycles more accessible to new riders.

The two models – a street-bike and a trail-bike – are described as motorcycles equivalent to the 125cc category. “The trail model is intended for riding backyards, pump tracks, or even out on the ranch or campgrounds,” said LiveWire. “The street model is perfect for urban errands, new riders, mini-moto fans, and anyone looking for a new hobby in the form of a readily customizable, approachable electric moto experience.”

Ludicrous $29,500 e-scooter built by F1 engineers to rip at 100 mph
By Abhimanyu Ghoshal
July 18, 2025
https://newatlas.com/urban-transport/bo ... 1-100-mph/
UK-based mobility company Bo has racing in its blood, and its latest creation is designed to bring that heritage to the forefront in the form of a high-performance electric scooter subtly named the Turbo.

It might look a lot like the consumer-grade M model that Bo revealed in 2023, but after 18 months in the garage, it's mutated into an absolute fire-breather that's built to exceed 100 mph (160 km/h) and – according to Bo's initial testing – accelerate quicker than a Tesla Model 3.Image
How do you push a 15 mph (25 km/h) scooter all the way up past the 100-mph mark? The same powertrain simply wouldn't cut it, so the Turbo got twin electric motors, each rated for over 300A peak current, along with a new 88-V 1,800-Wh battery to deliver plenty more power on demand.

Fat-tire Aventure bike gets torquey mid-drive motor boost
By Paul Ridden
July 19, 2025
California's Aventon began its fat-tire Aventure journey in 2021, relying on Bafang hub motors to power the ride. Now the company has gone in-house for the new M model, a mid-drive wilderness wanderer that gives riders enough torque to conquer.

Both the original best seller and 2023's follow up adventure bike were powered by a 750-W rear-hub motor that peaked at more than 1,000 watts. So Aventon opting to tame things down with a 250-W offering may seem a little odd at first glance of the spec sheet.

But the new in-house motor has been moved to the middle of the bike for a more natural, responsive feel, aided by a double-side torque sensor, as well as improved weight distribution. It peaks at 750 watts, and offers pedal-assist up to 20 mph (32 km/h) over three modes. But that can be unlocked to 28 mph, and the bike can be had with a throttle as an optional extra.

Capable folding e-trike unlocks to 20 mph, hauls up to 500 lb
By Paul Ridden
July 29, 2025
Though ebikes can be a great way to get around town without getting out of puff, they're not suitable for every rider. Some folks benefit from an extra wheel, lower assist speeds and extra comfort. Velotric's Triker ticks all those boxes and more.

"We created Triker to serve the riders often left behind in the ebike movement – those who want the freedom and joy of biking without the fear of falling," said Adam Zhang, CEO and co-founder of Velotric. "It’s a story of dignity, independence, and connection. Triker brings that back to the people who deserve it most."

That means the company's first e-trike has been specifically designed to meet the assisted-transport needs of seniors and folks with limited mobility, as well as recreational riders looking for more stability, control and comfort.

Powerful folding fat-tire adventure ebikes conquer city and trail
By Paul Ridden
August 07, 2025

Heybike has announced a pair of flagship fat-tire folding ebikes as the first models in its X Series. But being a budget e-mobility brand, both the Mars 3.0 and Ranger 3.0 models roll into the city and beyond carrying surprisingly low price tags.

As you might expect with newborn family siblings, both UL-certified ebikes share some key features, starting with a 750-W hub-drive version of Heybike's new Galaxy eDrive platform – though each flavor is tuned differently. Each model can be powered on using a NFC card, a PIN on the color TFT display, or through the companion mobile app.

They roll with a half-twist throttle that can be configured to match whatever PAS setting the bike is set at, or operate independently at up to 28 mph (45 km/h) – which is a level of flexibility you don't see every day. The rider can also smoothly shift up or down an 8-speed Altus gearset from Shimano, and take the bikes out in various weather conditions thanks to IP65 water resistance.

BMX-inspired ebike aims to reignite the joy of riding, with a Boost
By Paul Ridden
August 20, 2025
https://newatlas.com/bicycles/boost-min ... red-ebike/
Conversion kit maker Boost has announced its first complete ride. The mini-bike has been designed as a "great solution for anyone with limited storage space but an appetite to enjoy getting from A to B."

We've covered a number of ebike conversion kits here at New Atlas, including flavors from the likes of Clip, Velotton, Revos and Swytch. The idea being that folks who already own a regular bike and want to join the electric transport revolution can just buy a battery/motor kit and install it.

The Boost kits start at just £649 (about US$875), which can be a good deal cheaper than investing in a brand new motor-powered bike. However, the company recognizes that there are new riders who might want to just jump straight in and go for a new ebike.

Ola Electric isn’t a new name in the electric mobility space. The Indian company has regularly made headlines, and this time, the news comes straight from the source. Ola CEO Bhavish Aggarwal has confirmed that the company’s long-awaited Diamondhead electric superbike will officially hit the streets in 2027.

The company also took the covers off the prototype – an actual working model that was ridden on stage at Ola’s annual event, Sankalp 2025, in India. That’s not all, an official price was also announced – INR 500,000 (around US$5,700).

BMW's self-balancing scooter concept encourages you to ditch your helmet
By Abhimanyu Ghoshal
September 07, 2025
BMW Motorrad is back at the drawing board, dreaming up a wild two-wheeler concept that I'd love to see it bring to life post-haste. With its seat-belt-equipped bench and roll cage, the Vision CE is designed to take you places without the need for bulky safety gear or a helmet.

Despite how fleshed out it looks, this scooter hasn't been specced out yet. But BMW envisions it as a self-balancing single-track mobility machine, meaning the Vision CE could eventually be built to ride without a motorcycle license.

The company hasn't detailed the self-balancing tech either, and that might indicate that this vehicle is a while away. There are a few self-balancing concepts floating about, including ones from Honda and Yamaha and this entirely self-driving scooter, but nothing's close to hitting the market anytime soon.

High-torque long-range ebike eats miles for breakfast
By Paul Ridden
September 12, 2025
The company behind what we called the Rolls-Royce of electric scooters has announced an interesting long-range speed pedelec called the SP01. The touring ebike sports a 1,000-watt mid-drive motor, Shimano gears and front squish.

Navee showcased its upcoming SP01 at IFA 2025 in Berlin last week, which is a bit of a strange choice given that it wouldn't ride as a regular ebike in many European countries. This is due to regulations limiting the motor to 250 watts and speed to 25 km/h (15.5 mph) – meaning that riders will need to plump for extra paperwork (and cost) before throwing a leg over the high-step 6061 alloy frame.
