New Horizons conducts first-ever successful deep space stellar navigation test

by Charles Blue, Phys.org
https://phys.org/news/2025-07-horizons- ... ellar.html
As NASA's New Horizons spacecraft traveled through the Kuiper Belt at a distance of more than 5.5 billion miles from Earth, an international team of astronomers used the far-flung probe to conduct an unprecedented experiment: the first-ever successful demonstration of deep space stellar navigation.

A paper describing the results was accepted for publication in The Astronomical Journal. The pre-print is available on the server arXiv.

As a proof-of-concept test, the researchers took advantage of the spacecraft's unique vantage point as it traveled toward interstellar space to image two of our nearest stellar neighbors, Proxima Centauri, which is 4.2 light-years from Earth, and Wolf 359, which is 7.86 light-years away.

From New Horizons' perspective, the two nearby stars shifted their apparent positions in the sky as they appear to astronomers here on Earth, an effect known as stellar parallax.

Did something just hit Saturn? Astronomers are racing to find out

Something may have just hit Saturn – and, if so, an amateur astronomer could hold the key to confirming the event, which would be the first ever recorded on the gas giant.

Chinese Satellites Complete First High-Altitude Rendezvous for Possible Groundbreaking Refuelling
Although impressive, it raises concerns about potential docking with and disabling other countries' orbital military assets.
By Jon Martindale July 8, 2025

Two Chinese satellites have completed what could be a first for in-space rendezvous and refueling efforts. They came together in a geosynchronous orbit and have since maintained a steady orbit together. Although unconfirmed, this is thought to be the first orbital refueling at such a height—the two satellites are currently over 20,000 miles from Earth.

Orbital refueling is an important component in keeping satellites and space stations in low Earth orbit flying, but any efforts beyond that have been merely speculative until the past few years, when serious efforts from a range of private and national entities have explored its possibilities. China may have gotten ahead of the curve with this latest docking, though, in an impressive world first that raises serious concerns for satellites from nations and entities that align themselves differently from China's goals and ambitions.

Canadian Firms Make Major Push For Domestic Launch Vehicle Development
In further evidence of nations pushing to develop nationally controlled access to space.
By Jon Martindale July 8, 2025
https://www.extremetech.com/aerospace/c ... evelopment
Although Canada has contributed highly capable astronauts and space-bound technologies to the global efforts outside our atmosphere, it's never had its own space industry complete with launch vehicles. That's changing in 2025, though, as a pair of private companies are pushing to develop and maintain their own Canadian launch vehicles and aerospace production industry, giving the Northern country their own route to space without relying on other countries, companies, or their launch vehicles.
https://www.extremetech.com/aerospace/c ... evelopment
The primary firm leading the charge is NordSpace, a Canadian aerospace company developing Canada's first homegrown launch vehicle: Taiga. The first sub-orbital launch will take place in August, but Nordspace has ambitious goals to make future orbital vehicles that are affordable, responsive, globally available, and even somewhat environmentally friendly. Also backing these efforts is ProtoSpace, another Canadian aerospace company but one that's focused on developing and producing space grade components within just a few days, as opposed to the weeks and months often expected in the industry.

Our space force should be doing this but I think it should be focused on a space station. I think having to go to orbit every time is a huge waste of energy if the battle field is in space. Focus on being where the action is.

The ships we should build should be powered by nuclear engines and should look like subs but in space.

Trump taps Sean Duffy as interim NASA administrator

Source: The Hill
President Trump said late Wednesday that he was tapping Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy to lead NASA on an interim basis after Trump yanked his original nominee for the post.

“Sean is doing a TREMENDOUS job in handling our Country’s Transportation Affairs, including creating a state-of-the-art Air Traffic Control systems, while at the same time rebuilding our roads and bridges, making them efficient, and beautiful, again,” Trump posted on Truth Social. “He will be a fantastic leader of the ever more important Space Agency, even if only for a short period of time.”

Duffy becomes the latest Cabinet official to be given multiple job titles. Secretary of State Marco Rubio is also serving as interim national security adviser.

Duffy responded to the president’s post on X, writing, “Honored to accept this mission. Time to take over space. Let’s launch.”

Observations of Ammonite suggest it is between 220 and 380 kilometers (137 and 236 miles) in diameter. Modeling the sednoid's orbit, the team found its perihelion – its closest approach to the Sun – is between 50 and 75 astronomical units (AU), with one AU being the distance between the Earth and the Sun. Its aphelion – the furthest point from the Sun – it is around 252 AU out from the center.
