Elon Musk Has Turned Off Many Liberals to Electric Vehicles—and Not Just Teslas

Introduction:
Read more of the Mother Jones article here: https://www.motherjones.com/politics/2 ... -study/(Mother Jones) US liberals have become so disgusted with Tesla since Elon Musk’s rightward turn that they are now not only far less likely to purchase the car brand but also less willing to buy any type of electric car, new research has found.
The popularity of Tesla among liberal-minded Americans has plummeted since Musk, Tesla’s chief executive and the world’s richest person, allied himself with Donald Trump and helped propel the president to election victory last year.
While liberals reported mostly positive intentions around buying an electric car in August 2023, their overall support for EVs eroded in the wake of a collapse in their opinion of Teslas, according to the new study, which polled Americans on an array of environmental actions.
By the latest poll, taken in March as Musk was gutting the federal workforce in his role as Trump’s top adviser after delivering what appeared to be a Nazi salute, the intention to buy any EV among liberals slipped into negative territory.
“The suspicion is that Elon Musk became so synonymous with EVs in the US that perceptions of him affected the entire class of vehicles,” said Alexandra Flores, a psychologist at Williams College and lead author of the study, published in Nature. “This made them way less appealing to liberals—he really dragged down perceptions of EVs in general. It’s definitely unusual to have a chief executive have an impact on a whole class of products like this.”

1,000 miles: EV range world record demolished ... by a pickup truck

General Motors charged out of left field this week to announce a new world record, and it's a properly astonishing feat. An engineering team within the Detroit automotive giant managed to push the single-charge EV range record into triple digits, beating out the ever-slippery Lucid Air GT sedan by over 300 miles (483 km) with the Silverado EV. A pickup truck.
As announced last October, the 2025 Silverado EV Max Range Work Truck (8WT) boasts an EPA-estimated range of 492 miles (792 km), shooting right past the Teslas and Rivians of the world to park comfortably behind the 516-mile (830-km) Lucid Air Grand S Touring at the tippity top of the US market range leader list. Its 68-mpg-e efficiency is far less impressive, but you can't call it a slouch when it comes to long-hauling on a single charge.
Well before Lucid's sedan had set its recent 749-mile (1,205-km) mark, itself a full 100 miles (161 km) farther than the previous record, some GM engineers began theorizing about how far the Silverado Max Range WT commercial pickup might actually go with a little bit of forethought and precise execution. Some voices among the group were particularly ambitious: 1,000 miles (1,609 km) didn't seem out of reach.

The world’s first semi-solid-state battery-powered EV is an unlikely car

When it comes to electric vehicles, there's always a race to be first. It was only a matter of time until we got the first production EV with a semi-solid-state battery.
But here's the thing: many folks would have imagined that car to be a futuristic modern marvel with sharp lines and god-knows-what electronics on board. Least of all, you’d be hard-pressed to have found someone who would have thought it would be an MG. But here we are, and we are not too far away from the car’s official release, too!
The battery tech will find its way onto a special version of the MG4 crossover hatchback. Called the Anxin Edition, the special model will be powered by a manganese-based lithium-ion battery with cells supplied by SAIC-backed Suzhou QingTao Power Technology, instead of the usual lithium-iron-phosphate (LFP) battery.
