BMW's reimagined i3 electric is coming for the Tesla Model 3
By Utkarsh Sood

BMW is working on introducing a new 3 Series that will include a standalone electric vehicle called the i3, alongside the standard ICE and plug-in hybrid models. And unlike the oddball carbon-fiber hatchback that was once known by that name, the next-generation electric i3 is set to be an out-and-out sedan.

It will be built on the long-awaited Neue Klasse dedicated EV platform, and is slated to go into production at the automaker's Munich facility in July 2026, paving the way for an early 2027 debut.

The 2027 BMW i3, code-named NA0, will be built with the company's latest motor and battery technology. The sedan will be available in a number of trim levels, including the performance flagship i3 M60 xDrive, as well as the i3 20, i3 40, i3 40 xDrive, i3 50, and i3 50 xDrive. All of this suggests that BMW might just be gearing up to capture a sizable portion of the premium electric sedan market, potentially coming for the Tesla Model 3.

Mercedes electric van test goes 684 miles with minimal stops
By Utkarsh Sood
July 06, 2025
Mercedes-Benz is serious about electric luxury travel, and its upcoming VLE electric van is the latest proof of this. In the latest round of real-world tests, the MPV completed a 684-mile (1,100-km) journey from Stuttgart to Rome with impressive efficiency.

During the 13-hour trip, the test vehicle required just two 15-minute charging breaks. This points to a real-world range in the ballpark of 250 to 300 miles (400 to 480 km), although official figures are yet to be released.

Built on Mercedes-Benz's next-generation Van Electric Architecture (VAN.EA), the VLE tackled a variety of terrain, from narrow Italian city streets to Alpine mountain passes, all the while while keeping cabin temperatures at 22 °C (72 °F), despite outdoor temperatures ranging from 11 °C and 33 °C (52 and 91 °F).

Lucid Motors Breaks EV Distance Record, Managing 749 Miles on 1 Charge
Officiated by Guinness World Records, the new record broke the previous holder by close to 100 miles.
By Jon Martindale July 9, 2025
California-based electric vehicle company Lucid Motors has broken the Guinness World Record for the longest journey completed by an electric car on a single charge. The Lucid Air Grand Touring sedan managed 749 miles between Munich, Germany, and St. Moritz in Switzerland without charging once. The journey included alpine roads, highways, and smaller secondary roads and extends the previous electric distance record by 99 miles.

When it comes to electric vehicles, one of the most iconic metrics for their capabilities is single-charge travel distances. As battery capacities have increased, aerodynamics have improved, and electric motors have grown ever more efficient, the range has extended dramatically over the past two decades. In the early 2000s, the best electric cars could manage were around 100 miles on a single charge, with the Tesla Roadster boosting that to over 200 in the latter half of the decade. Newer designs pushed that to 300, then 400 over the ensuing years, but Lucid Motor's new record blows those away.

Drivers offered up to £3,750 discount to buy electric cars

14 July 2025

The cost of some new electric cars will soon be reduced by up to £3,750 under grants being introduced by the government to encourage drivers to move away from petrol and diesel vehicles.

The discounts will apply to eligible vehicles costing up to £37,000, with the most environmentally friendly vehicles seeing the biggest reductions, the Department for Transport (DfT) said.

Carmakers can apply for funding from Wednesday, with the RAC saying discounted cars should start appearing at dealerships "within weeks".

But some drivers have previously told the BBC that ultimately, the UK needs more charging points to spur people to buy electric vehicles (EVs).

The government has pledged to ban the sale of new fully petrol or diesel cars and vans from 2030.

China’s BYD Takes the Lead Over Tesla in the Self-Driving Car Wars
By promising to pay for AI failures, the Chinese EV giant is challenging Tesla's "use at your own risk" model.

As the auto industry races toward autonomy, most companies are rolling out driver-assist features with one hand while handing out waivers, disclaimers, and legal fine print with the other. Not BYD.

The Chinese EV giant just made an unprecedented move: it’s offering a public, financial guarantee for its autonomous parking system. If the system malfunctions, even due to an algorithmic failure, BYD will cover all resulting damages, including repair costs, third-party property damage, and compensation for personal injury.

Honda's Super EV compact SUV concept makes camouflaged Goodwood debut
By Utkarsh Sood
July 19, 2025
https://newatlas.com/automotive/honda-super-ev-concept/
Who knew the day would come when we’d witness a boxy, hatch/SUV crossover from Honda ripping it up at the 2025 Goodwood Festival of Speed? Well, that day is upon us.

That’s Honda’s way of making a dynamic global debut for its upcoming Super EV concept. It has long been spied undergoing several tests across the UK; this time, however, Honda took to the global event to reveal a camouflaged version of the car, which was seen going up a 1.16-mile (1.856-km) hill climb course that runs through the expansive Goodwood estates.

Designed as an A-segment compact EV, take it as a much-deserved successor to the Honda e, which was discontinued in 2023. The company is confident the Super EV Concept will offer an “uplifting, heart-pounding driving experience.”
