Watch: How Amazon's Zoox will roll out 10,000 robotaxis a year
By Abhimanyu Ghoshal
June 20, 2025
Amazon subsidiary Zoox is ramping up production of its robotaxis in California ahead of its commercial launch in Las Vegas expected later this year. It's flung open the doors to its second production facility that's set up to roll out over 10,000 of its driverless four-passenger vans annually.
Image
The Hayward, California, plant spans 220,000 square feet (~20,440 sq m), and will assemble the company's robotaxis and conduct end-of-line testing before deploying these vehicles – which will be owned and operated by Zoox.

You can get a look at the shop floor in the video below. There isn't any onsite welding or painting going on, because Zoox works with components that arrive pre-manufactured from suppliers. The new factory is staffed by a combination of humans and robots; the latter will be tasked with moving robotaxis down the assembly line and precisely applying adhesive to the vehicles' surfaces.

Tesla robotaxis finally hit the road – but you can't ride one yet

Credit where it's due: Tesla CEO Elon Musk promised his company would launch a robotaxi service this June, and it actually rolled out self-driving cabs in Austin, Texas, over the weekend. Too bad you'll probably have a hard time hailing one at the moment.

The service is currently invite-only, and the fleet is believed to feature just a handful of cars at the moment. The Verge notes that it's likely about 10-20 vehicles, and a number of early invites have been sent out to Tesla-favoring influencers. That tracks with Financial Times' recent report about the automaker's plan to initially keep the rollout small, and restrict access to only "company employees or invited guests."

The cars are not the Cybercab designed for the ride-hailing service and revealed last October; instead, you'll get a Robotaxi-branded Model Y sedan.

Uber and Waymo’s commercial robotaxi service is open for business in Atlanta

June 24, 2025

Waymo robotaxis can now be hailed in Atlanta via Uber. The two companies, which already offer the “Waymo on Uber” service in Austin, said on Tuesday the commercial service will initially cover about 65 square miles in Atlanta.

The launch, if successful, is poised to propel the businesses of both companies. Uber, which has locked in partnerships with 18 autonomous vehicles companies, said it has an annual run-rate of 1.5 million mobility and delivery AV trips on its network. Meanwhile, Waymo said it provides 250,000 paid robotaxi rides every week across Austin, Los Angeles, Phoenix and San Francisco.

The addition of Atlanta to that list should push those numbers up.

Waymo’s fleet in Atlanta is in the “dozens” and will eventually be expanded over time, a company spokesperson told TechCrunch. The companies have previously said the fleet shared between Atlanta and Austin will grow to the hundreds.

Even made it to the Verge
Wow this was... Not ready.

Also, would this thread not fit in infrastructure and transport more? The only reason I put the original version of the thread in AI & Robotics was..................
And remember my friend, future events such as these will affect you in the future

VW's ID. Buzz fully autonomous robotaxi set for 2026 debut
By Utkarsh Sood

Nope, we're not talking about a Tesla Robotaxi we’re talking about. This is the self-driving ID. Buzz, a fully autonomous van created and engineered by Volkswagen’s mobility-focused sub-brand, MOIA. Unlike retrofitted cars, the ID. Buzz has been built from the ground up specifically for mobility services.

For the past few years, the ID. Buzz has been frequently spotted during tests on the streets of Hamburg. MOIA plans to launch the vehicle in Germany first, with wider rollout across Europe and the US expected by 2026.

Just days ago, Elon Musk announced that Tesla’s Robotaxis would begin official testing in Austin, Texas. VW’s announcement signals that competition in autonomous mobility is heating up. But there’s a key difference: MOIA is aiming at corporate clients and mobility providers, while Tesla is targeting the passenger ride-hailing market directly.

This means you're more likely to see fleets of ID. Buzz vans operated by companies than owned by your next-door neighbor.

Self-driving camper trailer is so smart, it all but poops for you

Silicon Valley has stepped in and done what the global RV industry has been struggling to do for years. Smart trailer startup Pebble has sent out the world's very first production self-propelled, self-hitching motorized trailer to early-adopting buyers. And it's hidden an ace up its sleeve, equipping the launch edition with an Auto Dump system that streamlines the dreaded process of emptying the black tank. Is there anything this wunder-caravan can't do by itself?

Ordinarily, we wouldn't be writing this article. There's only so many times you can write about a product inching its way toward actuality before it gets boring for everyone. And given that we already wrote about how the Pebble Flow trailer debuted, got an official pricing and launch time frame and went into production, we pretty much used up all those times.

What else is there to say, really? Delivery should naturally follow production so doesn't really stand out as new information. Congrats to the first owners; that's that.
