Canada proposes 100% tariffs on Tesla, I have an alternative: open the door to Chinese EVs

Mar 4 2025

A Canadian candidate for Prime Minister has proposed implementing a 100% tariff on Tesla vehicles in response to US tariffs on Canadian goods.

I propose an alternative: open the door to Chinese EVs in Canada.

US President Donald Trump has confirmed a 25% tariff on all Canadian goods, except energy, which is tariffed at 10%, and 25% on all goods coming from Mexico.

Canada has already retaliated with similar tariffs on US goods, including electric vehicles – most EVs in Canada come from the US.

Chinese EV maker BYD says new fast-charging system could be as quick as filling up a tank

Tue 18 Mar 2025

Chinese electric vehicle (EV) maker BYD has unveiled a new charging system that it said could make it possible for EVs to charge as quickly as it takes to refill with petrol and announced for the first time that it would build a charging network across China.

The so-called “super e-platform” will be capable of peak charging speeds of 1,000 kilowatts (kW), enabling cars that use it to travel 400km (249 miles) on a five-minute charge, founder Wang Chuanfu said at an event livestreamed from the company’s Shenzhen headquarters on Monday.

Charging speeds of 1,000 kW would be twice as fast as Tesla’s superchargers, whose latest version offers up to 500 kW charging speeds. Fast-charging technology has been seen as key to increasing EV adoption.

The news will be unwelcome for already struggling Tesla, whose stock has plunged – down 15% on 10 March alone – in the wake of its owner Elon Musk’s championing of hard-right causes in Europe and slashing of federal workforce as part of his work with the Trump administration.

Since December, when Tesla’s market value hit a record high of $1.5tn, it has fallen by almost half. Besides missing sales targets, Tesla faces heightened investor pressure to produce autonomous vehicles, which Musk has promised but failed to deliver for about a decade. It is also facing increased competition with more affordable EV models, like those produced by BYD and other Chinese companies.

Tesla is recalling most Cybertrucks due to exterior panel issue

Updated 10:19 AM EDT, Thu March 20, 2025

Tesla is recalling nearly all Cybertrucks in the United States to fix an exterior panel that could detach during driving, the latest in a series of call-backs for the pickup truck.

The recall covers just over 46,000 vehicles built from November 2023 through February 27 of this year, Tesla said in a filing with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration Thursday.

The recall could prove to be a setback for Tesla (TSLA), whose stock has lost about half its value this year as the electric vehicle maker grapples with rising competition, an aging lineup and backlash against CEO Elon Musk’s controversial role overseeing cuts to federal spending in the Trump White House.

The recall addresses the risk that a stainless-steel exterior trim panel can detach from the vehicle, making it a road hazard and boosting the risk of a crash, Tesla said. Tesla’s service will replace the rail panel assembly with a new one that meets durability testing requirements, the automaker said.

Zero-emissions jet promises 5X the range of battery-electric
By Loz Blain
March 24, 2025
https://newatlas.com/aircraft/beyond-aero-bya1/
French company Beyond Aero has released an updated design for the zero-emissions jet it's aiming to put into service by 2030, claiming it'll be considerably cheaper to run than conventional jets, while cutting cabin noise by half.

Yes, it's a render – and yes, new and innovative aircraft companies haven't exactly been thin on the ground over the last few years, so a degree of skepticism is warranted
But Beyond Aero has a 70-strong team, operating mainly out of Toulous[/img]e, with some US$44 million of capital on board and letters of intent for 108 sales totalling $914 million in the books. It's a Y Combinator graduate as of 2022, and a member of the World Economic Forum's First Movers Coalition, for what those are worth. This isn't a backyard organization.
Range figures over 1,380 miles will be possible, depending on payload and cruise speed, bringing nearly all routes within Europe within reach with zero emissions

Nissan Leaf is being reinvented as a 373-mile crossover for 2026
By Abhimanyu Ghoshal
March 26, 2025
https://newatlas.com/automotive/nissan- ... -suv-2026/
For several years, the Nissan Leaf hatchback led the charge in global EV sales after it went into production all the way back in 2010. Next year, it's getting more than a facelift: it'll arrive first in the US and Canada as a compact SUV.

Nissan promises this third-gen model will be spacious, family-friendly, and deliver a pretty decent 373 miles (600 km) of range on a single charge. It'll also support Tesla Superchargers across North America, thanks to the inclusion of an NACS charging port.

That's a big step up from the existing Leaf, whose top-end variant is rated at a modest 212 miles (341 km).

This version will share the modular CMF-EV platform developed in collaboration with Renault and originally introduced in Nissan's other compact SUV, the Ariya. That should translate to a roomy and quiet cabin, and hopefully a low price tag too. You'll also get sizeable 19-inch alloy wheels, as well as a panoramic moonroof.

Aptera's solar EV hits Route 66 for a 300-mile road trip
By Abhimanyu Ghoshal
March 31, 2025
Some 20 years after it was first founded, San Diego, California-based startup Aptera has taken its solar-powered electric vehicle (EV) out on a proper 300-mile (~480-km) road trip – the first time it's been filmed doing so.

Co-CEO Steve Fambro set off in the company's production-intent vehicle from Flagstaff, Arizona, on to Route 66 all the way to Imperial Valley in California. Aptera says this journey represents a major step in validating its systems in real-world conditions.

In the video below, the Aptera solar EV really looks like something that dropped onto the freeway from beyond Earth's orbit. This vehicle is pretty close to what the company will build and ship, but the interiors still need a bit more work, with exposed components visible in the footage.
