Speaking of, please get religion (along with dark money) out of our politics please. I do understand the irony of what Lily is getting at, but that historical hypocrisy underlies a bigger issue of having such influence policy to begin with. I do think a politician like Andy Beshear better represents the ideal these conservatives oftentimes preach, which again, irony.

I've always held the notion, that a "conservative" or any POTUS should rather place their hand upon the constitution on inauguration rather than the Bible.

Stephen King gives blunt three-word response after discovering Florida banned 23 of his books in schools
10 hours ago

Stephen King has given a blunt three word response to discovering that 23 of his books have been banned from school libraries in Florida, a law which is now being challenged by six major book publishers.

In 2022, Florida governor Ron DeSantis signed a landmark legislation that targeted books which included any sexually explicit material, following complaints from conservative group Moms for Liberty.

The law was brought into effect in July 2023 and has seen noteworthy classics such as Brave New World by Aldous Huxley and The Adventures of Tom Sawyer by Mark Twain all removed from elementary, middle and high school libraries. Even non-fiction books like The Diary of a Young Girl by Anne Frank has also been banned.

Amongst the novels by King that have reportedly been banned include Carrie, It, The Gunslinger, The Running Man and The Long Walk.

King, who is no stranger to voicing his political opinion, wrote in response to learning just how many of his books have been banned: “Florida has banned 23 pf [sic] my books. What the f***?”

Right-Wing Influencer Network Tenet Media Allegedly Spread Russian Disinformation

In an unsealed indictment, the DOJ alleges that employees of state-owned RT contracted for and oversaw the dissemination of Kremlin talking points by popular right-wing influencers, including Benny Johnson and Tim Pool.

Sep 4, 2024 6:57 PM

A Tennessee-based media network that produces shows for high-profile right-wing influencers such as Benny Johnson and Tim Pool was largely funded by Russian state-backed news network RT, according to a federal indictment against two RT employees that the US Department of Justice unsealed on Wednesday. The DOJ claims the US company—which WIRED, along with other news outlets, was able to identify as Tenet Media but goes unnamed in the indictment—posted hundreds of videos on social media that pushed Kremlin-approved talking points.

With the tagline “Fearless voices live here,” Tenet Media’s network includes online creators known for their right-wing politics, including Johnson, Pool, Dave Rubin, and Lauren Southern. In addition to the followings of the network’s individual creators, which collectively number in the millions, Tenet Media itself boasts more than 315,000 followers on YouTube and thousands more across Facebook, Instagram, X, and TikTok.

It's pretty obvious at this point that if one were to split America into two halves representing two differing takes (conservatism/liberalism) it would likely appear very similarly to the societal difference between North & South Korea.

No, the South Korean portion wouldn't be some perfect utopia, but it would at least be a sane, normally functioning country which cooperated well on the world stage while displaying a strong economy and trust in scientific institutions.

The fear and paranoia that's rampant within conservatism within America also reminds of how North Korea tends to be as a standard.

One of the more interesting arguments that I have encountered that is of a conservative nature relates to philanthropy. The argument is that accumulation and concentration of wealth is not a bad thing as it allows the rich to engage in philanthropic practices. Further, instead of trying to force government into liberal practices, the most effective course of action may be to earn a lot of money and then engage in philanthropy. Many rightfully scoff at this argument, yet there is the case of Bill Gates to consider.

Bill Gates Plans to Close His Foundation, Give Away Nearly All of His Fortune Over 20 Years
by Tom Huddleston
May 9, 2025

Introduction:
(CNBC) Bill Gates plans to give away nearly all of his personal wealth and shutter the Gates Foundation within 20 years, the billionaire announced in a blog post on Thursday.

"People will say a lot of things about me when I die, but I am determined that 'he died rich' will not be one of them," wrote Gates, 69. "There are too many urgent problems to solve for me to hold onto resources that could be used to help people."

The Microsoft co-founder, whose net worth Bloomberg currently estimates at $168 billion, has pledged for years to give away most of his wealth to his philanthropic foundation. His eventual goal is to drop "off of the list of the world's richest people," he wrote in a social media post in July 2022.

Now, Gates has set a specific timeline for disbursing his fortune: The Gates Foundation is set to close its doors on December 31, 2045. Since the Foundation's launch in 2000, it has contributed more than $100 billion to global causes — particularly working to eradicate diseases and poverty, address climate change and expand access to healthcare and education.

Gates estimates the Foundation will be able to double that total, and hand out another $200 billion between now and 2045, depending on factors such as inflation and market performance, he wrote. He plans to increase its annual budget from $6 billion to $9 billion.

Amy Coney Barrett's Supreme Court Remarks Spark MAGA Fury
by Sophie Clark
May 16, 2025

Introduction:
(Newsweek) Supreme Court Justice Amy Coney Barrett's remarks in court on Thursday have sparked MAGA backlash online, with some saying President Donald Trump made a "huge mistake" appointing her to the bench.

The nation's highest court was hearing arguments about whether lower courts have the authority to block Trump's executive order to end birthright citizenship, which ensures that children born in the U.S. are citizens regardless of their parents' status.

During the hearing, Justice Coney Barrett questioned the solicitor general over the Trump administration's approach to complying with court rulings.

Why It Matters

Coney Barrett, who was nominated by Trump in 2020, has emerged as a more centrist judge than expected in certain Supreme Court cases and has been criticized by Trump supporters for voting against her conservative colleagues in the past.

Relations between the executive and the judiciary have been tense as of late. In March, after President Donald Trump urged the removal of a judge who ruled against his deportation policies, Chief Justice John Roberts, in a rare statement, criticized these types of calls, without naming Trump directly, saying that impeachment is "not an appropriate response" to disagreeing with a judge.

caltrek's comment: This illustrates a point I have been trying to make. That there is a difference between conventional conservatism, and MAGA extremism. In this case, it is Barrett who is the conservative and her MAGA critics that are taking a reactionary (if not actually fascist) anti-constitutional stance.

Hundreds of Billionaires Pledged to Give Away $600 Billion to Charity—but the Bill Gates and Warren Buffett Era of Philanthropy May be Over
by Emma Burleigh
May 24, 2025

Introduction:
(Fortune via MSN) • The era of billionaire baby boomer men leading philanthropy is over—wealthy women are taking the reins, as the likes of Bill Gates and Warren Buffett close an epoch of giving. Thanks to newly proposed tax policies, trust-based “stealth giving” and female mega-donors like MacKenzie Scott are the future of philanthropy.

Bill Gates and Warren Buffett ushered in a new Gilded Era of philanthropic giving, likened in influence to the Rockefellers and Carnegies. But charity work is about to look a whole lot different as higher taxes are threatened on liberal institutions, and new methods of giving are popularized by women mega-donors.

Earlier this month, Gates announced that he would be sunsetting his foundation, giving away $200 billion by 2045 and expediting his plans to shed his $100 billion personal fortune.

“There’s an air of anticipation in terms of if and how people are going to follow in his footsteps,” Amir Pasic, dean of the Lilly Family School of Philanthropy at Indiana University, tells Fortune.
Additional extract:
Experts agree that a shift is on the horizon—but that doesn’t mean a screeching halt to philanthropy altogether. In fact, it could open the door for a more diverse group of donors to take the lead.

Joe Walsh Announces He is Joining the Democratic Party
by Annabella Rosciglione
June 4, 2025

Introduction:
(Washington Examiner) Former Republican Rep. Joe Walsh said he is joining the Democratic Party, five years after he left the Republican Party.

Walsh, who came up in politics during the Tea Party movement but has since emerged as a vocal critic of President Donald Trump, said he was joining the party after five years of being an independent. In a post to his Substack, Walsh wrote, “Three words I never thought I’d ever utter: I’m a Democrat.”

“The stakes are simply too high to NOT become a Democrat. Let me explain why,” he wrote. “Let’s start with the obvious—a tyrant sits in the White House. The very thing our Founders feared most is here.”

Walsh said he was still the “same passionate TEA partier who went to Congress in 2010 to fight against our out-of-control debt and fight for a more efficient government."

“I’m still a border hawk, an unabashed gun rights advocate, and an unyielding defender of free speech,” he wrote, but added “I’ve opened my eyes and listened to people who don’t think like me. And by doing so, I gained a greater understanding of and appreciation for LGBTQ issues, structural racism, the need for empathetic immigration reform, the dangers of climate change, and the role government must play to help care for the neediest and most vulnerable among us.”

Senate Republican Weighs Bailing On Party Amid Repeated Clashes with Trump: Open to ‘Exploring Something Different’
By Joe DePaolo
June 23, 2025

Introduction:
(Mediaite) A more moderate Republican senator who has repeatedly clashed with President Donald Trump is keeping the door open on potentially leaving the party.

In numerous media interviews on Monday to promote her new book, Sen. Lisa Murkowski (R-AK) entertained the possibility of bailing on the GOP. One of those interviews was conducted by former FiveThirtyEight podcaster Galen Druke on his GD Politics show. In it, Murkowski refused to quell speculation that she could jump ship, but did say she has fundamental disagreements with Democrats.

“Challenged as I think we may be on the Republican side, I don’t see the Democrats being much better,” Murkowski said. “They’ve got not only their share of problems, but quite honestly, they’ve got some policies that I just inherently disagree with.”

So Druke followed up by asking whether Murkowski would consider going Independent — should the GOP lose three seats in the 2026 midterm elections, thus putting Democrats in control of the chamber.

“There may be that possibility,” she said, adding, “There is some openness to exploring something different than the status quo.”

Elon Musk Vows to Start a New Political Party after Trump Feud. Here's Why That's Harder than It Sounds.
By Joe Walsh
July 2, 2025

Introduction:
(CBS) As billionaire Elon Musk feuds with President Trump over his signature tax and domestic policy legislation, Musk has reupped his calls to launch a new political party — a daunting task even for the wealthiest person on Earth.

Musk first floated launching a third party, dubbed the "America Party," earlier this month, part of a nasty back-and-forth between the president and the Tesla CEO that marked the likely end of their political alliance. Musk raised the idea again this week as lawmakers raced to send the One Big Beautiful Bill Act to Mr. Trump's desk — and this time, Musk put a time limit on the plan.

"If this insane spending bill passes, the America Party will be formed the next day," Musk wrote in a post on X Monday evening, hours before the bill passed the Senate on Tuesday and headed back to the House. "Our country needs an alternative to the Democrat-Republican uniparty so that the people actually have a VOICE."

It remains unclear if Musk will follow through on his pledge, but the idea could be easier said than done. If Musk decides to launch a new political party, he'll need to contend with a thicket of complicated state laws, time-consuming ballot access rules and intense litigation.

"Only the richest person in the world could make a serious effort at creating a new American political party," Brett Kappel, a veteran election lawyer, told CBS News.

caltrek’s comment: One tactic that might facilitate things is to take over one or more already existing third parties. A relatively simple voter registration drive to have voters change their party registration to one of these parties could do the trick. Here in California, there is the American Independent party and the Libertarian party, either of which already shares some of the Musk philosophy. It is my recollection that Florida has even more parties than California. They are not the only two states with third parties that have already achieved ballot access.

I would love to see a conservative “America Party” party split the Republican party vote. That could result in a huge bonanza for the Democrats.

It is hard to believe, but there are times when Trump comes on as a true conservative as opposed to the more extreme right-wing elements of this country.
Trump Slammed by His Own Supporters Over Proposed ‘Great Betrayal’ on Immigration
By Charlie Nash
July 4, 2025

Introduction:
(Mediaite) President Donald Trump received backlash from supporters on Thursday after he proposed legislation that would allow migrant workers who entered the United States illegally to remain.

Trump announced he was “working on legislation right now,” which would allow illegal workers to stay, telling supporters at a rally in Des Moines, Iowa, “You had cases where, not here, but just even over the years where people have worked for a farm, on a farm for 14, 15 years and they get thrown out pretty viciously and we can’t do it. We gotta work with the farmers, and people that have hotels and leisure properties too.”

“Now, serious radical right people, who I also happen to like a lot, they may not be quite as happy, but they’ll understand,” he continued. “Won’t they? Do you think so?”

Trump’s question was quickly answered as supporters of the president — and not just those on the “radical right” — expressed outrage over the proposal.

“Trump wants to let hotels owners, many of whom are receiving interest-free minority and migrant loans, and getting tax breaks, to give amnesty to its illegal immigrant labor?” commentator Mike Cernovich said in an X post. “What percentage of hotels are owned by Americans? It’s much lower than it used to be. How can you compete when a H-1B gets a tax break and low or no interest loan? Now Trump is talking about giving them even more – amnesty for their workers? This would be a great betrayal.”

Elon Musk is Back in Politics with the New America Party
By Julianne McShane
July 6, 2025

Extract:
(Mother Jones) In another post, Musk said the party would have legislative discussions with both the Democratic and Republican parties and caucus independently.

What sparked this? It seems that Trump signing his legislative agenda into law on Friday via the so-called One Big Beautiful Bill—which Musk had previously railed against, describing it as “utterly insane” and arguing it would undo some of the work of DOGE—pushed Musk over the edge. In response to someone on X asking how Musk went from loving Trump to trying to undermine him, Musk wrote: “Increasing the deficit from an already insane $2T under Biden to $2.5T. This will bankrupt the country.”

Musk follows a long line of people who have attempted to launch a third party and discovered it was an uphill battle, due to ballot requirements and the need to build powerful political allies in a staunchly two-party system. In fact, Musk himself previously flirted with the idea in 2022 before seemingly abandoning it. As my colleagues wrote in a special issue of this magazine published last year, third parties’ electoral efforts have never been successful in America—at least, if you define success in terms of winning elections. And as David Corn wrote:

Third-party and independent candidates always talk about the legitimate need to enlarge the political debate. But they also present the major parties, billionaires, and even foreign governments with opportunities for political mischief.

Speaking of mischief, Musk’s massive wealth offers a unique form of power to potentially create it. The tech mogul, after all, spent more than $290 million on last year’s election to put Trump back in the White House, according to FEC filings. He also infamously spent $25 million earlier this year to try to buy the Wisconsin Supreme Court election; Musk’s preferred candidate lost, and the race also became a referendum on his attempts to buy elections. Nonetheless, when someone on X outlined the laundry list of demands he would have to satisfy to successfully launch the America Party, Musk responded, “Not hard tbh.”

caltrek: One danger for the Left would be fusion candidates. Politicians who managed to appeal both to the MAGA base as well as Musk conservatives. The American party might only be a factor where MAGA candidates are seen as too extreme in their alignment with Trump, and weak on curbing deficit spending.

Elon Musk Launches ‘America Party’ With Wild String Of X Posts — Trashes Trump’s Bill for ‘Bankrupting Our Country’
By Joe DePaolo
July 6, 2025

Extract:
(Mediaite) In a series of posts on X late Saturday and early Sunday, Musk launched the new (American) party to appeal to those hoping to curb government spending.

“By a factor of 2 to 1, you want a new political party and you shall have it!” Musk wrote — citing the results of a July 4 poll he conducted. “When it comes to bankrupting our country with waste & graft, we live in a one-party system, not a democracy. Today, the America Party is formed to give you back your freedom.”

From there, Musk proceeded to amplify comments such as one criticizing Republicans for having “folded like a cheap suit.

In a signal he plans to win at any cost, Musk made an allusion to Jeffrey Epstein — by sharing a photo of Ghislaine Maxwell captioned: “Why is she the only one going to prison? Where’s all the men that had sex with those underage girls?”

Musk — at the height of his nasty battle with Trump — claimed the president is in the Epstein files. He later deleted the posts accusing Trump and apologized to the president.

Advice for Elon Musk from the Most Successful Third-Party Campaign in Modern History
By Catherine Kim
July 10, 2025

Introduction:
(Politico) A new third party created by a billionaire, born out of frustration with the ballooning federal deficit and the two-party system. We’re talking about Ross Perot’s Reform Party, of course.

The parallels to Elon Musk and his America Party are obvious, but Musk may be lucky to get as far as Perot did. The Texas businessman won roughly 19 percent of the popular vote when he ran for president in 1992 — the most successful bid by any independent candidate in modern history — and took in nearly 8.5 percent in 1996. His Reform Party became, at least briefly, a real political force to be reckoned with, even catapultinga former professional wrestler into a governor’s office. But it was ultimately no match for the U.S.’s two-party system, and its influence fizzled out by the 21st century.

Could Musk succeed where Perot didn’t? We asked Russell Verney, a top adviser to Perot’s presidential campaigns and a former chair of the Reform Party — and Verney isn’t optimistic.

“It’s not something you do by posting on Twitter that you have a political party. It takes a lot more work than that,” Verney said in an interview with POLITICO Magazine.

Still, Verney said Musk’s efforts might still have an impact. Despite Perot’s defeat, his clamoring for deficit reduction reshaped the political debate and fueled President Bill Clinton’s push for a balanced budget. Musk could have similar sway, if he puts in the work.

Conservative Crowd Cheers as Megyn Kelly Calls Out Epstein Files ‘Scandal’ and Rips Pam Bondi
By Zachary Leeman
July 12, 2025

Introduction:
(Mediaite ) Megyn Kelly got a conservative crowd cheering when she asked about the importance of the “Epstein Files,” a scandal she laid at the feet of Attorney General Pam Bondi.

Kelly joined Charlie Kirk at a Turning Point USA event on Friday in Tampa, Florida where she opened by calling the “Epstein files” fallout the first real “scandal” of President Donald Trump’s administration.

“This is the first big scandal, I’d say, of the Trump administration that’s on team rational. It’s not a fake media scandal like the left tries to create for President Trump every other day. It’s one of the right’s own making. And it’s not going well. And it has to do with Jeffrey Epstein. But let me just ask you, make some noise if you care about the Jeffrey Epstein scandal,” she said.

The crowd responded by cheering in excitement.

“Raise your hand if it matters a lot to you. Raise your hands,” Kirk added. “So every hand of 7,000 people.”

Let’s Count All the Ways Marjorie Taylor Greene Is Angry with President Trump
By Julianne McShane
July 15, 2025

Introduction:
(Mother Jones) Georgia Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene’s fealty to President Donald Trump has, for the most part, seemed nearly unshakable.

She has compared him to Jesus Christ. She has repeatedly—and falsely—claimed that the 2020 election was stolen from him. And she reportedly wanted to be Trump’s VP, claiming to the Guardian that her name was “on a list” of potential contenders before JD Vance was ultimately crowned the winner.

But lately, Greene appears to be breaking with Trump on several key fronts: His decision to launch strikes on Iran, his renewed support for Ukraine, and now the Department of Justice’s and FBI’s conclusion regarding the Jeffrey Epstein files. Together, against the backdrop of mounting anger within MAGA’s ranks, Greene’s increasingly outspoken words underscore just how much the president has alienated some of his most loyal supporters through a slate of consequential decisions made over the last few weeks.

On Monday, Greene told the Times that she opposed Trump’s new plan to sell US military equipment to European countries that can be transferred to Ukraine, arguing that the so-called “America First” policy of getting the US out of conflicts abroad is “what we campaigned on.”

“This is what I promised also to my district,” she added. “This is what everybody voted for. And I believe we have to maintain the course.”

Marjorie Taylor Greene Signals Potential Split From GOP
By Chantelle Lee
August 4, 2025

Introduction:
(Time) Georgia Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene, who has historically been closely aligned with President Donald Trump’s MAGA movement, is proclaiming her discontent with the current trajectory of the Republican Party.

“I don’t know what the hell happened with the Republican Party,” Greene told the Daily Mail in an interview published over the weekend. “But I’ll tell you one thing, the course that it’s on, I don’t want to have anything to do with it, and I, I just don’t care anymore.”

While Greene said that she is still loyal to Trump, she told the outlet that she thinks the party “has turned its back on America First and the workers and just regular Americans.”

On Monday, the Georgia lawmaker appeared to criticize the Trump Administration’s handling of various issues on social media. In one post, she included an image that said “number of arrests” and listed several incidents or events—including an apparent reference to the Jan. 6, 2021 attack on the U.S. Capitol, “pedophile arrests” related to convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein, and the “2020 election”—with the number zero next to each one. Greene captioned the post, “Don’t talk about it if you aren’t going to do it.”

In another post the same day, she noted that “our Republican controlled Congress is no where near completing our appropriations bills” ahead of a Sept. 30 deadline, and that lawmakers are on recess until Sept. 2. “The American people pay ALL the taxes and deserve their representatives to do our jobs and put Americans needs and interests FIRST,” she wrote.

caltrek’s comment: It is interesting how the longer she serves in Congress, the more she sounds like a Democrat. Marjorie Taylor Greene Declares She’ll ‘Say Every Damn Name’ on House Floor as She Tells Sex Abuse Victims, ‘Give Me a List’
By Rhian Lubin, Eric Garcia
September 3, 2025

Introduction:
(Independent) Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene said the CIA, FBI and the Justice Department “holds the truth” on Jeffrey Epstein as she vowed to reveal “every damn name” of the purported high-powered clients of the late financier’s underage sex trafficking operation.

The Georgia representative, a Trump loyalist, dialed up the pressure on her own party by speaking at a news conference on Capitol Hill Wednesday, hosted by fellow rogue GOP Rep. Thomas Massie (R-Ky.) and Democratic Rep. Ro Khanna of California.

Greene has backed Massie’s “Epstein Files Transparency Bill,” along with fellow GOP congress members Lauren Boebert and Nancy Mace. They were joined by as many as 100 survivors of Epstein’s abuse at the event.

“The truth needs to come out and the government holds the truth,” Greene said. “The cases that are sealed hold the truth, Jeffrey Epstein’s estate holds the truth. The FBI, the DOJ and the CIA holds the truth.”

“And the truth we are demanding come out on behalf of these women but also as a strong message to every innocent child, teenager, woman and man that has been held captive in abuse,” Greene added.

Why Small Business Owners are More Likely to be Right Wing
September 2, 2025

Introduction:
(Eurekalert) Small business owners are more likely to identify with and vote for right-wing parties, a new study in the British Journal of Political Science, published by Cambridge University Press reveals. The research suggests it is the experience of being a small business owner that leads people to adopt conservative views on government regulation.

The study, which analysed the political leanings of small business owners in the United States, also found that current business owners, but not past owners of businesses, vote more to the right than people who never owned a business; that people who inherited a business, more than those who started a new business, are more right-leaning; and that even within a narrow professional subset such as physicians with their own practices, business ownership aligns with a disproportionate right lean.

Neil Malhotra, Professor of Political Economy in the Graduate School of Business at Stanford University, said the findings indicate that the appeal of right-wing parties derives from experiences associated with running a business, rather than from background characteristics that lead people to open or run a business.

“The heightened need to deal with the regulatory state especially can lead small business owners to lean further to the right,” said Malhotra.
The study used a wide range of data sources: an original, first-of-its-kind bespoke survey of small business owners based on a unique administrative sampling frame of the recipients of the US Paycheck Protection Program; a comparable survey of a general sample of the US adult population; a cross-national survey data; and data on the partisan registration and donations of a targeted set of occupations.
