Saint Vincent & Grenadines Prime Minister on Hurricane Beryl & Climate Crisis
by Amy Goodman
July 3, 2024

Introduction:
(Democracy Now!) As the earliest Category 5 storm ever observed in the Atlantic carves a path of destruction through the Caribbean, we get an update on damage from Hurricane Beryl from the prime minister of St. Vincent and the Grenadines, Ralph Gonsalves, where the storm hit Tuesday. He describes the disaster scenes he witnessed and discusses the rising challenge of extreme weather fueled by the climate crisis. “The developed countries, the major emitters, are not taking this matter seriously,” says Gonsalves. He says the world must dramatically reduce emissions and that the current political and economic system is “driving all of us towards, if not extinction, to a terrible, inhospitable place called Earth.”

AMY GOODMAN: Residents of Jamaica are bracing for life-threatening winds and storm surge as Hurricane Beryl is likely to make landfall this afternoon. The now-Category 4 storm has left a trail of devastation across the Caribbean, killing at least six people, wiping away large swaths of the island of Carriacou in Grenada and St. Vincent and the Grenadines, where most homes on Union Island have been completely destroyed. Jamaica and the Cayman Islands remain under a hurricane warning.

Ahead of the storm’s arrival, the Jamaican Prime Minister Andrew Holness called for stronger climate action from wealthier nations.

B[]PRIME MINISTER ANDREW HOLNESS: [/b] Hurricane Beryl is the earliest Category 5 hurricane on record. It highlights the growing impact of climate change on global weather patterns, particularly on small island developing states like Jamaica. While our carbon emissions are minuscule, our region bears the brunt of the impacts of climate change. The hurricane further highlights the urgent need for global climate action and targeted support to enhance resilience against the escalating dangers of climate change.

Some Caribbean islands see almost 'total destruction' after Hurricane Beryl

Source: USA Today

Published 10:18 p.m. ET July 3, 2024

A more complete picture emerged Wednesday of the extensive damage wrought by Hurricane Beryl's trek across the Windward Islands, revealing destruction and at least seven deaths.

At least three islands report more than 90% of the homes and buildings either destroyed or severely damaged, the Caribbean Disaster Emergency Management Agency reported Wednesday. All three are within the chain of Grenadine Islands, where Beryl roared into the Caribbean on the southern end of the Windwards, between St. Vincent and Grenada.

With 19 participating states across the Caribbean, the agency was helping coordinate disaster response on Grenada and St. Vincent and the Grenadines even as it continued to track Beryl’s movements across Jamaica, Cayman Islands and Belize. The eye of Beryl, still a Category 4 storm, raked Jamaica's coast Wednesday afternoon and was expected to pass near the Cayman Islands Thursday morning, before making landfall in the Yucatan on Friday morning.

The damage estimates for the Windwards – where Beryl made landfall over Carriacou – are only "a very preliminary look," said Elizabeth Riley, the disaster management agency's executive director. Beryl struck the islands with sustained winds of 150 mph and higher gusts on Monday, and the National Hurricane Center had warned that winds could be up to 30% higher on the tops of hills and mountains.

Biden Declares Disaster in Texas as Beryl's Flooding Rains Spread Inland
by Andrew Freedman and Jacob Knutson
July 9, 2024

Introduction:
(Axios) Former Tropical Storm Beryl weakened into a tropical depression Monday after killing at least eight people in Texas and Louisiana and causing widespread power outages and flooding in metro Houston.

Threat level: As of Tuesday evening, there were still widespread outages in the Houston area. Portions of eastern Texas, western Louisiana and Arkansas still face the threat of flooding rains and tornadoes.

• The power outages leave millions of people without air conditioning as temperatures rise into the lower 90s and heat index values push over 100 on Tuesday — something President Biden raised concern about after approving a federal emergency disaster declaration for Texas.

• The combination of extreme heat — the leading weather-related killers in the U.S. — and lack of air conditioning will be particularly dangerous for people cleaning up after the storm.

What he's saying: "The greatest concern right now is the power outages and extreme heat that is impacting Texans. As you all know, extreme heat kills more Americans than all the other natural disasters combined," Biden said in a statement.

• "As part of the federal support, we pre-positioned generators and are moving in additional ones to support any power outages, which will help Texans as the extreme heat arrives."
