Historic day as Vauxhall's Ellesmere Port plant starts electric van production

08:42, 7 SEP 2023

It's an historic day for Ellesmere Port as the town's Vauxhall plant starts production of electric vans for the first time - making it the sole electric vehicle-only manufacturing site in the UK.

The North Road factory, now named after the parent firm Stellantis, will produce the Vauxhall Combo Electric, Opel Combo Electric, Peugeot e-Partner, Citroën ë-Berlingo and - being announced today (September 7) due to increased demand for electric vehicles across Europe - the Fiat E-Doblò, compact vans.

Ellesmere Port is the first Stellantis plant globally dedicated to electric vehicles following £100m investment to transform the plant in readiness for EV production. From 2024, Ellesmere Port will also produce a range of electric passenger vehicles across the Stellantis brands, including the Vauxhall Combo Life Electric, Peugeot e-Rifter and Citroën ë-Berlingo MPVs.

Kemi Badenoch, Secretary of State for Business and Trade, said: “Today’s announcement in which Ellesmere Port becomes the UK’s first electric vehicle-only manufacturing plant and the first Stellantis plant globally dedicated to electric vehicles, is a very visible demonstration that this Government has got the right plan for the UK’s automotive sector.

"Alongside recent investments from other major vehicle manufacturers, we are ensuring the UK remains at the forefront of automotive innovation as well as securing jobs in this critical industry and its wider supply chain."

Tesla to install charging stations at 2,000 Hiltons in North America
Source: CNBC

Tesla plans to install 20,000 electric vehicle charging stations across 2,000 Hilton properties in the U.S., Mexico and Canada beginning next year, the companies said Thursday.

For Tesla, the buildout of wall connectors is another way to increase mass adoption by offering more convenient charging locations. The company’s Universal Wall Connector can charge any North American vehicle model, not just Tesla vehicles. For Hilton, it’s about meeting demand from leisure and business travelers.

“We’re seeing a rapid and steep increase in the number of requests for EV charging. We’re trying to meet our guests’ needs with this new agreement with Tesla,” Matt Schuyler, Hilton’s chief brand officer, told CNBC.

The announcement coincides with the beginning of business travel season, as more executives will be attending conferences such as the APEC Summit, Communacopia and Dreamforce, offering an opportunity for hotel operators to drive revenue. Over the summer, U.S. hotel rates fell as more Americans headed overseas to enjoy time in Europe. This fall, Wall Street analysts will want to see if hotel brands can get business travel bookings in the U.S. back to pre-pandemic levels.

Elon Musk just requested $100 million from the US government for an ambitious new project
here’s his plan

Tesla made waves when it delivered on orders of its all-electric semi truck, aptly called the Semi, last year — and now the company may get funding from the American government to build Megacharging stations for them between California and Texas.

The automaker has requested $100 million from the United States government to build nine charging stations for the Semis, according to CleanTechnica and Bloomberg. The stations will be strategically positioned between Northern California and the southern border of Texas. Each station would feature up to eight individual 750-kilowatt chargers, which means eight Semis could charge simultaneously at each of the nine stations.

The company also urged Texas state officials to send requests to the federal government on its behalf to encourage the approval of the funding.

The Semi prototype was unveiled in 2017, but the truck didn’t hit the streets until 2022, when PepsiCo received 15 of the vehicles.

Nissan to go all-electric by 2030 despite petrol ban delay

Nissan will accelerate plans towards electrification by committing that all vehicles sold in Europe will be electric by 2030.

The announcement comes despite the UK postponing its 2030 ban on the sale of new petrol and diesel cars to 2035.

Nissan's boss said the firm's move was "the right thing to do".

Car trade body the SMMT has voiced concerns that the postponement of the ban would see consumers delay the switch to electric vehicles.

Nissan will also introduce new battery technology by the end of the decade that it said will reduce both the charging time and cost of electric vehicles (EVs), but it did not specify when EVs would cost the same as petrol cars.

All car companies should do this to show the government they are not messing around.

Daimler fuel cell semi travels 650 miles with one fill
Daimler Truck last week announced the successful trial of its Mercedes-Benz GenH2 Truck prototype. The hydrogen-electric semi-trailer truck completed 1,047 kilometers, or 650 miles, on a single fill of hydrogen.

Completed with zero CO2 emissions, the truck crossed Germany, starting from Woerth am Rhein and ending in Berlin. The trial was conducted with a full load (gross weight of 80,000 pounds) driving a distance comparable to what's covered by current diesel-powered trucks.

First previewed in 2020 in the Mercedes-Benz GenH2 Truck concept, the truck's powertrain features a pair of electric motors, and each motor can deliver a continuous 308 hp and 1,163 lb-ft of torque and a peak of 442 hp and 1,527 lb-ft.

Normally the motors draw energy from a hydrogen fuel-cell stack but during high-load situations, energy is also drawn from a battery. The battery has a relatively small capacity since it's only used temporarily, such as when the truck is conducting a pass or climbing a steep hill.

Stockholm to ban petrol and diesel cars from centre from 2025

Wed 11 Oct 2023 12.11 BST

Stockholm has announced plans to become the first big capital city to ban petrol and diesel cars from its centre, in an effort to slash pollution and reduce noise.

From 2025, 20 blocks of Stockholm’s inner city area, spanning its finance and main shopping districts, will be restricted to electric vehicle traffic only. A decision on whether to expand the zone will be made in early 2025.

Announcing the plan, Lars Stromgren, the city’s vice-mayor for transport, said: “Nowadays, the air in Stockholm causes babies to have lung conditions and the elderly to die prematurely. We need to eliminate the harmful exhaust gases from petrol and diesel cars. That’s why we are introducing the most ambitious low-emission zone to date.”

A number of cities have introduced – or are introducing – schemes to try to tackle air pollution but Stockholm’s goes further than most. Paris, Athens and Madrid have only banned diesel cars, and London has a charging scheme that covers the most polluting combustion engines.

“Many cities have implemented low-emission zones where high-emission cars are allowed to drive if they pay a charge,” Stromgren was quoted as saying by Air Quality News. “Stockholm’s model is more far-reaching. Petrol and diesel cars are prohibited, period. It is more ‘ultra’ than the ultra-low emission zone of London.”

Mercedes reveals series eActros 600 long-haul electric truck
By Paul Ridden
October 13, 2023
In development since 2020, and on show in prototype form last year at the IAA Transportation expo, the eActros LongHaul has been given a new name, range-tested in Germany, and now revealed in series production form as the eActros 600.

The eActros 600 tractor rolls with three 207-kWh lithium-iron-phosphate battery packs for a projected per-charge range of more than 500 km (310 miles). Mercedes-Benz Trucks recently proved that this is real-world range too, traveling from Stuttgart over the Swabian Jura mountain range to Bolzano in South Tyrol on a single charge – a distance of 530 km.

The electric hauler boasts a combination weight of 44 tons, including a "standard semitrailer" weighing in at around 22 tons in the EU. For the Stuttgart to Bolzano trip, the prototype tipped the scales at 40 tons in total. After a recharge, the truck set off on the return journey – clocking more than 1,000 km in total with one intermediate top-up thanks to "the combination of an efficient drive, high battery capacity and high-performance recuperation."

Toyota and Lexus are adopting Tesla's EV charging standard

They will have access to 12,000 Tesla Superchargers starting in 2025.

Fri, Oct 20, 2023

One by one, automakers have started adopting the North American Charging Standard (NACS) used by Tesla's Superchargers as they move towards their goal of replacing their fleet with electric vehicles. Toyota is the latest company to join the growing list. The automaker has announced that it has reached an agreement with Tesla to incorporate NACS ports into certain Toyota-branded vehicles starting in 2025. Some EVs under its luxury brand, Lexus, will come with the standard's charging ports, as well.

By using NACS ports on its electric vehicles, Toyota is effectively giving its customers the power to access more than 12,000 Tesla Superchargers across North America. While the company won't be implementing the standard over the next year, its timeline matches its rival automakers'. To note, customers who already have Toyota and Lexus vehicles equipped with the Combined Charging System (CCS) will be offered access to NACS adapters starting in 2025, as well.

BMW also recently announced that it was adopting the standard for all its EVs in the United States and Canada. A few months ago, GM and Ford revealed they were making the switch starting in 2025, but owners will already be able to access Tesla Superchargers next year with an adopter. Hyundai will adopt the port for its EVs in the US in 2024, with EVs in Canada to follow in 2025. Honda, Toyota's fellow Japanese automaker, announced its transition to NACS in September and its plans to sell vehicles with the port in two years' time. It also said, however, that it's developing an adapter to allow pre-2025 Hondas to charge using Tesla's system.
