SC Senate set to consider a near total abortion ban.

The ongoing standoff between the South Carolina Senate and House on abortion access will take centerstage Tuesday, April 25 when the Senate returns to debate a near-total abortion ban.

Since the U.S. Supreme Court overturned Roe v. Wade, passing a stricter abortion ban has been a top priority for the General Assembly.

Attempts to pass a total abortion ban failed last year when female GOP Republicans, Sen. Katrina Shealy, R-Lexington, Sandy Senn, R-Charleston, Penry Gustafson, R-Kershaw, along with Sen. Tom Davis, R-Beaufort, banded together with Democrats. They helped stall and ultimately kill a near-total abortion ban. Lawmakers tried to reach a compromise but ended the year with no resolution in sight.

The Senate did not have the votes to pass anything less than a six-week abortion ban.

Will this year be different? It seems unlikely, not unless Senate leadership was able to flip Republican hold outs. Davis said last year that he would filibuster and prevent the bill's passage. He will go up against Sen. Richard Cash, R-Anderson, who has been the chief advocate for the House's version.

Civil Rights Groups Sue Over Anti-Democratic Laws Targeting Jackson, Mississippi

WASHINGTON, D.C. — On Friday, April 21, the NAACP, Mississippi State Conference of the NAACP, Jackson City Branch of the NAACP and six residents of Jackson, Mississippi filed a federal lawsuit challenging two recently enacted laws that target Jackson’s majority-Black population. The complaint, which was filed against Mississippi Gov. Tate Reeves (R), Mississippi Attorney General Lynn Fitch (R), the chief justice of the Mississippi Supreme Court and other law enforcement officials, challenges House Bill 1020 and Senate Bill 2343, two bills that were signed into law on the same day the lawsuit was filed. The plaintiffs contend that these two anti-democratic laws intentionally “discriminate[] against the majority-Black residents of Jackson on the basis of race in violation of the Equal Protection Clause of the Fourteenth Amendment of the U.S. Constitution” and ask the court to block their enforcement.

One of the challenged laws, H.B. 1020, creates a new court system with unelected judges in a portion of Jackson, the state’s capital city that is over 80% Black. Specifically, the unelected judges will have jurisdiction over “preliminary matters, criminal matters, violations of motor vehicle and traffic laws, and disturbances of the peace” within the state’s Capitol Complex Improvement District (CCID), a special district in Jackson centered around the state capitol building with its own police force. The complaint alleges that the unelected judges in the new CCID court, who are appointed by the white, conservative chief justice of the Mississippi Supreme Court, would have the authority to set terms of bail and release for “Jackson residents unfortunate enough to have charges filed in the CCID court rather than the Jackson Municipal Court.”

Additionally, H.B. 1020 allows Mississippi’s white attorney general to appoint the CCID’s prosecuting attorneys, which the plaintiffs similarly argue is unfair to Jackson residents. “H.B. 1020 singles out the predominantly Black population of Jackson for prosecution in a second-class criminal justice system in which the vast power and the immense discretion to enforce the law is placed in the hands of politically unaccountable prosecutors,” the complaint states.

In addition to creating an entirely new court system within the CCID, H.B. 1020 requires the chief justice of the Mississippi Supreme Court to appoint additional temporary judges to the Hinds County Circuit Court — which currently oversees Jackson — despite the fact that Black Mississippians in Jackson have historically elected Black judges to serve on that court. This scheme of “packing the existing court with unelected judges,” according to the plaintiffs, contravenes the 14th Amendment’s Equal Protection Clause since it “strip[s] Jackson residents of the right enjoyed by all other Mississippi residents to Circuit Court judges who live in the community and are locally elected.”

'MAGA movement' widely unpopular, new poll finds

President Donald Trump is still unpopular and so is the political movement created in his image, according to a new national NBC News poll.

The Make America Great Again, or ‘MAGA,’ movement, which takes its name from Trump’s first campaign slogan, was the least popular individual or group tested in the new survey. Just 24% of Americans have positive views of the movement, while 45% voice negative views.

These numbers come as President Joe Biden made Trump — and his movement — the centerpiece of his re-election launch video on Tuesday.

Biden in his video that “MAGA extremists are lining up to take those bedrock freedoms away.” Biden and his fellow Democrats often use the term “MAGA” as a catch-all to describe pro-Trump Republicans who embrace the former president’s more extreme positions, including his false claims that the 2020 election was stolen.

'Immense And Needless Suffering': Idaho's Abortion Ban Is Creating A Crisis Of Care

Panic was the first thing Dr. Kylie Cooper felt when her home state of Idaho implemented a near-total abortion ban following the repeal of federal protections last year.

As a maternal-fetal medicine physician in the largest hospital in the state, Cooper wasn’t used to feeling panicky. Her job working with high-risk obstetric patients didn’t allow for anxiety or fear. She was good at working under pressure, but this was different.

“Every time I was on call since the ban went into place, I had so much anxiety. What if I get that call and they’re previable? What are we going to do? There’s just fear there,” Cooper told HuffPost. “And anytime you insert fear into medical decision-making, it’s not a good situation.”

Cooper had worked for nearly five years at St. Luke’s hospital in Boise, which saw between 350 to 400 births a month.

She started to have trouble sleeping. Lying awake at night, she pictured her patients’ faces and remembered their circumstances: some with complicated fetal abnormalities, others with pregnancy conditions threatening their own lives. What am I going to do if that type of patient shows up again? How are we going to navigate this? she thought, staring at her bedroom ceiling.

If Trump actually gets the Republican nomination for president in the next election, this speech should be displayed on every media platform, every single minute of every single day. The focus of Trump’s speech—when he wasn’t whining about the House select committee on Jan. 6—was on law enforcement. In short, he wants a lot of it. In fact, he wants the U.S. to be more like—wait for it—China. Police on every corner. “Very short trials.” And mass executions. Trump also praised the way crime is handled in the Philippines, where over 12,000 people have been executed for drug-related crimes. And while the police were busy shooting everyone they suspected of selling or using drugs, Trump also insisted they force homeless people to leave the cities for tent-based camps erected in the wilderness.

Trump openly described a nation in which he would be in sole charge of a national police force, police would be exempt from the consequences of their actions, execution would be carried out immediately, following “a very quick trial,” and millions of Americans would be confined in internment camps without ever being charged with a crime.

Florida House moves to eliminate local renters' rights ordinances

TALLAHASSEE — Dozens of cities and counties across Florida have passed bills of “rights” for tenants, setting standards around rent increases, applications and evictions.

State lawmakers are looking to undo all of them.

On Wednesday, the House passed HB 1417 on a vote of 81-33, largely along party lines, and the Senate is preparing to take up its companion, SB 1586, on Friday. The bills would prohibit local governments from governing the relationships between tenants and landlords, like the ones created by Pinellas and Miami-Dade counties last year.

Instead, landlords and renters would have to follow the state’s Florida Landlord and Tenant Act, which is less robust than local ordinances.

FL House votes to allow 18 year olds and above to buy long guns; Current law is 21

The GOP-controlled state House passed a measure Friday night that would reduce the age — 21 down to 18 — for someone to legally purchase rifles, shotguns and other long guns. The measure would repeal what’s on the books related to the shooting massacre at the Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Broward County five years ago.

The vote was 69-36.

However, the likelihood of the bill becoming law is dubious, because there’s no Senate version.

The measure, HB 1543, was strongly opposed by Democrats, who said that there was no need to change the law, which came with a series of gun safety provisions in 2018 under then-Gov. Rick Scott’s tenure.

At the time, the NRA sued to challenge the 2018 law, saying that it violated the right to keep and bear arms under the Second Amendment. A federal judge upheld that law in 2021, and the U.S. Court of Appeals for the 11th Circuit upheld the law in a ruling issued last month.

North Central Republican Bobby Payne, the bill sponsor in the House on Friday, mentioned many of the provisions that were in the 2018 law, such as millions of dollars for mental health assistance in schools and the so-called Guardian program that allows for the arming of school personnel.

Kids under 13 would be banned from social media under new bipartisan bill. Here's what parents want.

WASHINGTON — Your kids may finally have to put their phone down after a bipartisan group of senators introduced legislation to set age restrictions on social media.

The lawmakers introduced a bill Wednesday that bans children younger than 13 from using social media platforms and requires parental consent for those between the ages of 13 and 17.

The move is among the first major bipartisan effort in Congress to restrict platforms for children and comes after lawmakers have recently pushed to make online platforms safer for children, including efforts to ban TikTok and regulate Instagram.

However, parents told USA TODAY they are skeptical of the legislation and whether it would be effective in addressing the rapidly emerging concerns over minors’ use of social media.

Hundreds of thousands of Fox News viewers have switched off the channel after the network fired top primetime host Tucker Carlson on Monday.

Substitute host Brian Kilmeade garnered 1.33 million audience members during the 8 p.m. Eastern slot on Wednesday, down 56% from the 3.05 million viewers who tuned in to watch Carlson last Wednesday, according to Nielsen ratings flagged by the Associated Press.

The dip in viewership allowed MSNBC's Chris Hayes to overtake Fox in ratings, a popularity contest that Carlson used to dominate.

The conservative host had an average audience of 3.03 million people for all of 2022, making it the second most popular program on cable television after Fox's "The Five."

When approached for comment, Fox sent a statement saying that for 21 years it's been cable news' most-watched network and has a team "trusted more by viewers than any other news source."

The good news is that Fox News is plummeting in the ratings. The bad news is that Fox News is plummeting in the ratings. Whay is that bad news?

If their (former) viewers are still interested in the news, there are other alternative news sources that they will consult. Those alternatives will largely not be Chris Hayes, but rather some source that will be willing to continue to lie to their audience in order to give them something they want to hear. The great lesson will not be "don't lie" but rather "don't lie about somebody that can sue you for libel or slander."

Something like "the election was stolen" as opposed to the "election was stolen and Dominion voting systems were the ones who enabled and/or carried out that theft."

AL: Senate committee approves legislation banning teaching of 'divisive concepts'

The Alabama Senate State Governmental Affairs Committee approved a bill Wednesday that would limit the teaching of “divisive concepts” after a public hearing that featured legislators saying that they do not trust one another.

SB 247, sponsored by Sen. Will Barfoot, R-Pike Road, bans the teaching of a number of “divisive concepts,” including teaching that any “race, color, religion, sex, ethnicity, or national origin is inherently superior or inferior” and that people should feel guilt for ancestors’ actions.

Barfoot did not appear at the meeting, but Rep. Ed Oliver, R-Dadeville, who sponsored a House version of the bill, spoke for it.

“What this bill does is it stops any woke ideology that divides people, adults and children alike,” Oliver said.

Proponents of the bill told legislators that they felt “woke ideology” impacted academics. Opponents of the bill told the senators that the bill was vaguely worded and would prevent the accurate teaching of history.
