Liz Cheney Plans to Go National
by Mike Allen
August 17, 2022
(Axios) Allies of Rep. Liz Cheney (R-Wyo.) tell Axios that after last night's primary loss, they expect her to start a super PAC — which would attract lots of wealthy, anti-Trump Republican donors.

Why it matters: Forming a national group would signal a run in the '24 GOP primaries, giving a real voice to anti-Trump Republicans.

Driving the news: It sure looked like a presidential-campaign stage when Cheney — vice chair of the House Jan. 6 committee — conceded Wednesday night in Jackson, Wyo. She immediately teased a '24 presidential run.
  • "[O]ur work is far from over," she began.
  • "The great and original champion of our party, Abraham Lincoln, was defeated in elections for the Senate and the House before he won the most important election of all," she added.
  • "Lincoln ultimately prevailed, he saved our Union and he defined our obligation as Americans for all of history."

She only got 29% in the primary. It is extremely unlikely that she has much of a chance to win the presidential primary....

Oh, I totally agree that Liz Cheney has little to no chance of actually winning the Republican party nomination. She is that party's last best hope, but an overwhelming majority of Republicans just don't see it that way. At least not in public. Still, it may be a worthy fight. Robert Reich had an interesting comment on Liz Cheney.

Liz Cheney and the Future of the Republican Party
by Robert Reich
August 17, 2022

Extract (after an introduction which largely duplicates what has already been covered in this thread):
I expect that Cheney will run for the Republican nomination for president in 2024. If Trump is still alive and coherent, and most Republican voters are still deluded by him, she will lose. I hope she then runs as a third-party candidate for a new Republican Party that represents the best values of the old GOP — one that I recall from when Dwight Eisenhower was president.

My father was a Republican. So was my grandfather. The first administration I joined in Washington was Gerald Ford’s. One of my dearest friends is Alan Simpson, former senator from Wyoming.

But since Ronald Reagan became president, I’ve watched the Republican Party turn from a governing institution into a crazed cult. It is not just bent on returning America to what it was before the New Deal. It is now intent on turning America into an authoritarian nation. It represents a clear and present danger to the future of the United States and the world.

I have disagreed with Liz Cheney on almost all the substantive issues she has voted on while in Congress. But on the transcendent issue of democracy — the foundation on which all other issues depends — I salute her leadership, her dedication, and her commitment. And I grieve for the Republican Party that has lost her and lost what’s left of its moral authority.

***

For those of you who may be interested, here’s what Cheney had to say (in her concession speech) last night in full...(see linked article acces to which is provided below):

Liz Cheney Presidential Run Could 'Could Single-handedly Swing the Election' to Donald Trump
by Meaghan Ellis
August 22, 2022

Introduction:
(Alternet) Rep. Liz Cheney (R-Wyo.) has vowed to do “whatever it takes to ensure Donald Trump is never again anywhere near the Oval Office.” That, apparently, includes running for president in 2024.

“It is something that I am thinking about,” Cheney said during an appearance on NBC News last week.

However, a new poll suggests her potential presidential run could be damaging for the wrong candidate. If Cheney opts to run for president, her run could be more threatening for President Joe Biden than it would be for former President Donald Trump, according to the results of a new Yahoo News/YouGov poll.

Per Yahoo News, the poll suggests, "if Cheney were to run for president as an independent in 2024, she could actually do the opposite. She could single-handedly swing the election to Trump."

The survey is reportedly based on results from 1,563 U.S. adults following Cheney's loss to a Trump-backed Republican candidate in Wyoming's primary election. Cheney's challenger managed to win the election by more than 40 percentage points.

Illinois voters may opt to vote-by-mail in all elections
Source: Associated Press

SPRINGFIELD, Ill. (AP) — Illinois voters have the chance to sign up to send their ballots for November and spring elections by mail — forever.

Elections officials are sending applications for permanent permission to vote by mail to each of the state’s 8 million registered voters.

No one is obligated to sign up. But for as long as they stay at the same address, those who do will receive ballots they can complete at home and put in the mail for all future elections.

“The availability of a permanent vote-by-mail list should make this method of voting more convenient for voters,” said Matt Dietrich, Illinois State Board of Elections spokesman.

Gov. Newsom signs law requiring California electors to vote for popular vote winner
Source: KRON-TV San Francisco
SAN FRANCISCO (KRON) – California Gov. Gavin Newsom (D) signed into law a bill that will “ensure the state’s presidential electors cast ballots for candidates who win the popular vote and do not instead switch candidates or abstain from voting,” according to a press release from state Sen. Bill Dodd (D-Napa).

Heretofore, if one of California’s electors changed their vote from the state’s popular vote winner when electors cast their votes in the electoral college, their new vote would count. Under SB 103, the elector “would be immediately replaced by a new elector who would cast a ballot for the winning candidate,” the press release states.

“While 33 states and the District of Columbia have laws requiring electors to uphold their voting pledges, many do not have any enforcement mechanism and a majority have no way to make sure electors faithfully comply,” the press release states. “Sen. Dodd introduced Senate Bill 103 amid increased national attention on the manipulation of the Electoral College system following the 2020 presidential election. Although President Joe Biden was the clear winner over President [Donald] Trump, some groups in other states suggested electors might ignore the outcome and ratify Trump instead.”

"This is a critical step toward protecting the legitimacy of our free election process and preventing extreme partisanship from denying the will of the voters," Dodd, who introduced the legislation, stated. "We must ensure our chosen electors uphold their responsibilities and do not go rogue, threatening the underpinnings of our democracy. I thank the governor for signing this needed legislation."
