I know we have the Social Media & Big Tech thread, but that's more of a general thread.

This thread is specifically for Apple, and stuff that's particularly notable about the company.

Apple has become the world's first $3 trillion company

Updated 2157 GMT (0557 HKT) January 3, 2022

New York (CNN Business) - Apple has reached yet another major milestone. The iPhone maker topped a market value of $3 trillion Monday — the first publicly traded company ever to be worth that much.

Shares of Apple (AAPL) were briefly up about 3% to a new all-time high of $182.88, surpassing the $182.85 per share it needed to be worth $3 trillion. The stock later pulled back from that level.

Apple's market value first crossed the $1 trillion threshold in August 2018 and passed $2 trillion in August 2020.

Apple shares were up nearly 35% in 2021. The company has benefited from booming demand for its new IPhone 13 and other older models as well as subscription services such as Apple Music, Apple TV+, iCloud and its popular App Store.

Sales surged nearly 30% to more than $83 billion in Apple's fall quarter, which ended in September. The company has a whopping $191 billion in cash as well.

In and of itself, the article below may not be all that important. However, I do think it says a lot about Apple's greater ambitions.

After Dutch Antitrust Order, Apple Starts Letting Local Dating Apps Use Alternative Payment Options
by Natasha Lomas
January 17, 2022

https://techcrunch.com/2022/01/17/apple ... ust-order/

Introduction:
(TechCrunch) Another regulatory brick in the wall for Apple: The iPhone maker agreed this weekend to changes to its App Store in the Netherlands focused on dating apps, agreeing to allow local developers of dating apps to be able to offer non-Apple based payments (via Reuters).

In December, the Netherlands Authority for Consumers and Markets (ACM) found Apple in breach of national competition rules — ordering it to adjust what it described as “unreasonable conditions” in the App Store that apply to dating app providers.

Apple had been facing the threat of a financial penalty if it failed to make changes by the weekend.

The tech giant went to court to seek an injunction against the order last month, including seeking to prevent the regulator from publishing its decision and applying for a temporary suspension of the order.

However, in a December ruling, the court largely rejected Apple’s arguments — giving the company until January 15 to comply with the order to let dating app providers offer alternative payment options to their users.
Don't mourn, organize.

Apple warns of security flaw for iPhones, iPads and Macs
Source: ABC News
SAN FRANCISCO -- Apple disclosed serious security vulnerabilities for iPhones, iPads and Macs that could potentially allow attackers to take complete control of these devices.

Apple released two security reports about the issue on Wednesday, although they didn’t receive wide attention outside of tech publications.

Apple’s explanation of the vulnerability means a hacker could get “full admin access" to the device. That would allow intruders to impersonate the device's owner and subsequently run any software in their name, said Rachel Tobac, CEO of SocialProof Security.

There are rumors that Apple will unveil some kind of VR or AR headset soon. What do you all think? Will the company known for creating new markets in the technology sector be able to convince the population at large to buy such a product?

I believe that Apple will show something like that in Q4 this year and release it sometime next year. My guess is that its SoC will be on TSMC 4nm. It will be better than Magic Leap 2 or Microsoft HoloLens 2. It will take years before mainstream adoption, just like with the iPhone, which didn't sell that well at the beginning. They managed to sell only 1.39 million iPhones in 2007, only 5 years later in 2012 their sales skyrocketed to 125 million. I think it will be similar with their mixed reality device. And their sales may also plateau on 200-300 million units per year in 2031. Usefulness of this type of devices will expand exponentially over the years, being rather weak at the beginning. Buying such thing on launch day in 2023 won't be a great experience in my opinion.

Apple begins making the iPhone 14 in India, marking a big shift in its manufacturing strategy

MON, SEP 26 20224:40 AM EDT

Apple said Monday it is assembling its flagship iPhone 14 in India as the U.S. technology giant looks to shift some production away from China.

“The new iPhone 14 lineup introduces groundbreaking new technologies and important safety capabilities. We’re excited to be manufacturing iPhone 14 in India,” Apple said in a statement.

Apple’s main iPhone assembler Foxconn is manufacturing the devices at its Sriperumbudur factory on the outskirts of Chennai.

The Cupertino giant has been manufacturing iPhones in India since 2017 but these were usually older models. This time with the iPhone 14, Apple is manufacturing its latest model in India for the first time, close to the device’s launch. Apple launched the iPhone 14 earlier this month.

Apple will sell India-produced phones locally but also export them to other markets globally. Customers in India will begin receiving the locally produced devices in the next few days.

Apple might finally make a touchscreen Mac / Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman reports a 2025 shift to OLED for the MacBook Pro could add the touchscreens Apple has so far resisted.

Apple is working on Macs with touchscreens, according to a report from Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman. While it’s uncertain whether the devices will actually come to market, Gurman says in a tweet that we could see a touchscreen MacBook Pro as early as 2025. The report also notes that the screens may use OLED technology, as opposed to the Mini LED displays that are currently in the 14- and 16-inch models.

The project seems to be in relatively early stages, with engineers being “actively engaged,” according to the report. Gurman says that there are no final plans for launching touchscreen Macs and that plans could always change — we’ve seen Apple scrap projects before, and the company has made prototype Macs with touchscreens that never saw the light of day, according to Craig Federighi.

How Apple's Upcoming Mixed-Reality Headset Will Work

  • Device will switch between AR and VR, have iOS-like interface
  • Long-anticipated headset can show Mac display, immersive video
Apple Inc.’s long-anticipated mixed-reality headset is an ambitious attempt to create a 3D version of the iPhone’s operating system, with eye- and hand-tracking systems that could set the technology apart from rival products.

The roughly $3,000 device, due later this year under the likely name of Reality Pro, will take a novel approach to virtual meetings and immersive video, aiming to shake up a VR industry currently dominated by Meta Platforms Inc. It’s a high-stakes gambit for Apple, which is expanding into its first major new product category since releasing a smartwatch in 2015, and the company needs to wow consumers.

Apple is pushing into an uncertain market with a premium-priced product. The company’s 1,000-person-plus Technology Development Group has spent more than seven years on the project, and Apple is counting on it to become a new revenue source — especially with sales growth poised to stall this year.

Maybe I'm not up to date but I'm not seeing the same kinds of moves in AI from Apple like I'm seeing elsewhere.
Feels like they could be left behind?

Apple's the richest company in the world - I feel like we'll probably see them just buying some of the smaller but still good AI companies, poaching some of the big name talent from other companies, giving them the equipment and funds to do something big and fast, and call it a day. The IPhone wasn't the first smart phone, but it's still the phone. They didn't have the first smartwatch, but the Apple Watch is still either the watch or decent competition for the title. They're years behind Oculus/Meta but their headset announcement is the big news in the AR/VR space.

I'm no Apple stan, just like Google or Amazon it's just another company to me that makes the sort of products I want (although I have Amazon and Google stuff because I can better afford those), but I can recognize that they do have a huge pull on the general populace and have a lot of fans/stans. I mean, they could wind up in another Apple Homepod situation playing a distant third to Echo Dot and Google Mini in the smart home space for their AI ambitions, but it's not the most likely outcome.
