Pa. Lt. Governor John Fetterman Recovering After Stroke
Source: CBS News
PITTSBURGH (KDKA) -- Pennsylvania Lt. Gov. John Fetterman is recovering following a stroke, his campaign announced Sunday. Fetterman, who is running for the Democratic nomination for the state's U.S. Senate seat, did not suffer "any cognitive damage," a release from his campaign said. He went to the hospital on Friday after he "wasn't feeling well."

"I had a stroke that was caused by a clot from my heart being in an A-fib rhythm for too long. Fortunately, Gisele spotted the symptoms and got me to the hospital within minutes. The amazing doctors here were able to quickly and completely remove the clot, reversing the stroke, they got my heart under control as well. It's a good reminder to listen to your body and be aware of the signs," the release said.

Fetterman said he is feeling "much better" and on his way to a "full recovery." "They're keeping me here for now for observation, but I should be out of here sometime soon. The doctors have assured me that I'll be able to get back on the trail, but first I need to take a minute, get some rest, and recover," Fetterman said in the release.

Fetterman said his campaign for U.S. Senate is not "slowing down." Four Democrats are running for Senate nomination: Fetterman, U.S. Rep. Conor Lamb, state Rep. Malcolm Kenyatta and Jenkintown council member Alexandria Khalil. The primary election is Tuesday...

John Fetterman to undergo procedure to implant pacemaker days after suffering stroke
Source: WTAE TV4 Pittsburgh
John Fetterman, Pennsylvania's lieutenant governor and a Democratic candidate for U.S. Senate, is set to undergo a procedure to implant a pacemaker, his campaign said.

"It should be a short procedure that will help protect his heart and address the underlying cause of his stroke, atrial fibrillation (A-fib), by regulating his heart rate and rhythm," his campaign said.

The procedure comes days after Fetterman announced that he was recovering from a stroke he suffered late last week. The 52-year-old said he went to the hospital on Friday after not feeling well and would remain a while for observation.

Earlier on Tuesday, Fetterman cast an emergency absentee ballot in Pennsylvania's primary election, his campaign said.

Madison Cawthorn loses his re-election bid after a deluge of scandals.
Source: New York Times
Chuck Edwards, a three-term state senator and business owner, has edged out Representative Madison Cawthorn in the Republican primary for a House seat representing North Carolina’s 11th District. Luke Ball, a representative for Mr. Cawthorn, said late Tuesday that the congressman had called Mr. Edwards to concede.

The outcome served as a rebuke of Mr. Cawthorn, a right-wing firebrand and the youngest freshman in Congress, who was once seen as a rising star of the Republican Party. It is also a significant victory for the old guard Republicans in North Carolina and Washington who in recent months had been feuding with Mr. Cawthorn over his personal and political errors and foibles.

Mr. Edwards, 61, has served in the state Legislature since 2016 and has built a staunch conservative brand by pushing measures to overhaul tax laws, enact a constitutional amendment for voter identification, and require county sheriffs to work with immigration enforcement agencies.

He entered the race with a natural constituency of traditional Republican primary voters, as well as endorsements from Senator Thom Tillis and most of the members of the Legislature in his district. Like Mr. Cawthorn, he was born and raised in rural Hendersonville, a city of 14,000 south of Asheville. Mr. Edwards will now face Jasmine Beach-Ferrara, a Christian minister and organizer who is the Democratic nominee, for the House seat overseeing a largely rural and working-class Republican stronghold tucked against the Blue Ridge and Smoky Mountains.

Doug Mastriano, a far-right 2020 election denier, is Pennsylvania Republicans' choice for governor.
Source: New York Times
Doug Mastriano, a central figure in former President Donald J. Trump’s efforts to overturn the results of the 2020 election in Pennsylvania, won the state’s Republican primary for governor on Tuesday, making the general election a referendum on democracy in the place where American representative government was born.

The Associated Press declared Mr. Mastriano, a retired Army colonel and two-term state senator, the winner over a crowded field of Republican candidates. In the campaign’s final days, his opponents mounted an unsuccessful last-ditch effort to consolidate support around a rival, former Representative Lou Barletta. In his short time in public office, Mr. Mastriano, 58, has emerged as Pennsylvania’s leading far-right figure.

He funded buses to shuttle supporters to the rally on Jan. 6, 2021, that preceded the attack on the Capitol. During his run for governor, he has barred the news media from attending his campaign events and has appeared with proponents of the QAnon conspiracy theory. At the start of the coronavirus pandemic, Mr. Mastriano proposed a public registry of people who had tested positive for the virus, but he later campaigned against mask-wearing and vaccines.

On Saturday, after public and private polling showed Mr. Mastriano with a sizable lead over Mr. Barletta and the rest of the Republican field, Mr. Trump endorsed him, citing his fight to overturn the election. “We’re going to win on May 17,” Mr. Mastriano said at a rally last week in Erie, Pa. “And to quote a friend of ours, it’s going to be huge.”

Kentucky Progressive Charles Booker Wins Democratic U.S. Senate Primary
by Brett Wilkins
May 18, 2022

Introduction:
(Common Dreams) Charles Booker—the progressive former Kentucky state lawmaker with a plan to tackle rampant inequality—cruised to victory in Tuesday's U.S. Senate Democratic primary, setting up a November contest against two-term Republican incumbent Rand Paul in which the challenger is vowing to "make history."

"We're going to beat Rand Paul. And let me be clear with you: We're going to blow Rand Paul out," Booker said during an appearance on The Young Turks. "We're gonna do it by doing two things. One, [by] inspiring a vision that encourages people to believe things can be better."

Booker touted his Kentucky New Deal, a plan to curb runaway inequality "which is really about us fighting for family, pushing the partisan divides aside, lifting up our common bonds, and really doing issue-based organizing."

"We're gonna work our asses off," the 37-year-old Louisvillian vowed.

"But on the second side of it, we're gonna beat Rand Paul by naming Rand Paul," he said. "A lot of people don't know what he does; he's a crisis actor, he's a contrarian, he's a fake libertarian, he stokes conspiracy theories."

Andrea Salinas Wins Democratic Primary for New Oregon Congressional District
by Sam Stites and Troy Brynelson

Extract:
(OPB.org) State lawmaker Andrea Salinas won the primary race on Tuesday (May 17) to become the Democratic nominee for Oregon’s 6th Congressional District, according to early primary returns.

Salinas took on a packed field that included eight other candidates to become the first Democrat to appear on a general election ballot for the new district.

The state Legislature created the district after the 2020 census showed Oregon’s population had grown…
...
Super PACs spent more than $12 million in advertising and direct mail campaigning on Flynn’s behalf. The revelation that most of that money was tied to cryptocurrency entrepreneur Samuel Bankman-Fried dominated headlines throughout the race.

Salinas overcame the funding gap to win the district’s Democratic nomination. Flynn conceded the race just before 10 p.m. Tuesday.

Morgan McGarvey Gets Nod Over Attica Scott in Kentucky Democratic Congressional Primary
by Divya Karthikeyan
May 17, 2022

Introduction:
(WFPL) Kentucky Senate Minority Leader Morgan McGarvey won the Democratic primary for the state’s 3rd Congressional district seat, easily defeating state Rep. Attica Scott according to initial returns.

Longtime Congressman John Yarmuth is not seeking reelection to the seat, which he has held since 2006. This is the first open seat race since 1994 in the Louisville-area district.

In what was projected to be a tough contest, both candidates ran on progressive platforms with little contrast between where they stand on major policy issues. But McGarvey and Scott had different takes on how best to work with Republicans in the state legislature and Congress.

During a victory speech Tuesday night, McGarvey said his experience as a Democratic leader in Kentucky’s Republican-dominated legislature will help him succeed.

Valerie Foushee Dominates Democratic Primary in North Carolina 4th Congressional District
by Rusty Jacobs
May 17, 2022

Introduction:
(WUNC) State Sen. Valerie Foushee easily won the Democratic nomination to run for North Carolina's 4th Congressional District, the seat being vacated by longtime progressive Rep. David Price.

Foushee now has the clear edge for the November General Election in a safely blue district that includes liberal bastions like Chapel Hill in Orange County, and all of Durham County.

According to unofficial results, Foushee got more than 46 percent of the vote, compared with 36-plus percent for runner-up, Nida Allam.

Results won't be official until after the 10-day canvas period during which county elections boards certify the results, finish processing and counting properly post-marked mail-in ballots and conduct hand-counts of ballots from randomly selected precincts.

Republican Rancher Takes Down a Trump-backed Extremist in Idaho’s Gubernatorial Primary
by Alex Henderson
May 20, 2022

Extract:
(Alternet) And in Idaho, the former president suffered a major disappointment when Idaho Gov. Brad Little defeated Trump-backed challenger Janice McGeachin, Idaho’s far-right lieutenant governor, by 21%.

One of McGeachin’s outspoken critics in Idaho is Jennifer Ellis, a rancher and conservative Republican who heads the political action committee Take Back Idaho.

During an interview with Politico published on May 20, Ellis discussed her group’s activities.

Ellis, Politico’s Ryan Lizza notes, founded Take Back Idaho in 2021 to “beat back the growing tide of extremist candidates” in her state. She formed the group, Lizza notes, after she “noticed a dramatic shift within the Republican Party.”
...
The Take Back Idaho founder told Politico, “I think there are so many bigger concerns than who Trump wants. In a state like ours, we’ve got a lot of challenges. We’ve got drought. We’ve got wildfire season coming. We have got infrastructure that needs to be rebuilt. I mean, we have real-world problems, not political problems. And we need grownups to fix them. And that’s the folks that we tried to get elected. So, I think it’s a waning influence over time.”

Summer Lee Wins Pennsylvania House Primary in Triumph for the Squad
by Andrew Solender
May 20, 2022

Introduction:
(Axios) Pennsylvania state Rep. Summer Lee has emerged victorious in the Democratic primary for an open U.S. House seat in Pennsylvania, according to the Associated Press.

Why it matters: The result marks another win for progressives this week in a pitched nationwide battle with more establishment Democrats for ideological control of the party.
  • More accutely, it sets the stage for the progressive "Squad" in Congress to grow its ranks, and thus its power within the House Democratic Caucus.
Driving the news: As of Friday, Lee had 41.8% of the vote to establishment-backed attorney Steve Irwin's 41.1%, according to the Pennsylvania secretary of state.
  • The race was tight enough that votes had to be counted for three days after primary day before the election was called by the AP.

New York judge approves congressional map, throwing Democrats into disarray
Source: Reuters

May 21 (Reuters) - A New York judge approved a new congressional map that pits two veteran Democratic incumbents against one another and boosts Republican odds of capturing more seats in November's midterm elections, further endangering Democrats' fragile U.S. House majority.

Justice Patrick McAllister, a judge in rural Steuben County, signed off on the map just before midnight on Friday, weeks after New York's top court ruled that the redistricting plan passed by the Democratic-controlled legislature was unconstitutionally manipulated to benefit the party.

The Democratic map would likely have given the party control of 22 of the state's 26 congressional seats this fall, serving to counterbalance similarly partisan maps passed in Republican-dominated states such as Florida, Georgia and Texas.

Republicans need to flip only five seats in November to win a majority in the House, which would enable them to block much of President Joe Biden's agenda.

Some Republicans are Now Fleeing from Trump's Election Fraud Claims
by Tom Boggioni
May 22, 2022

Introduction:
(Alternet) By and large, Republicans are ignoring Donald Trump's claims that there is election fraud in Pennsylvania that is preventing Dr. Mehmet Oz from claiming victory over David McCormick and Politico's David Siders is reporting that GOP lawmakers are increasingly moving on from echoing Trump's belief that every election that doesn't go there way is tainted.

As it stands now, Pennsylvania Republicans are furious with Trump after he criticized the fact that the GOP Senate primary has no clear winner yet by proclaiming on Truth Social, "The Pennsylvania Oz race is ridiculous. How long does it take to count votes. France, same day all paper, had VERIFIED numbers in evening. U.S. is a laughingstock on Elections. Stop FINDING VOTES in PENNSYLVANIA! RIGGED?”

As Siders notes, Trump's raving is a voice in the wilderness as lawmakers are not taking up his latest conspiracy theory and are finding his complaints about election tampering are growing old and stale.

"Donald Trump has been lying about voter fraud for so long that his impugning of yet another election seemed almost inevitable. What was more revealing was that, for the first time, Republicans appeared not to be listening," Siders wrote before adding, "Trump’s earliest effort to graft his 2020 complaints onto ballot counting in a midterm primary is falling flat. MAGA hard-liners who’ve lost primaries in other states in recent weeks have not contested the results. And when the primary calendar turns to Georgia on Tuesday, Trump’s election conspiracy crusade is likely to take another hit."

According to Christopher Nicholas, a Pennsylvania campaign consultant, "No one’s paying any attention to it.”
Read more here: https://www.alternet.org/2022/05/trump-election-fraud/

caltrek's comments: This story would be more convincing had it not been for the nomination of Doug Mastriano as the Republican nominee for governor of Pennsylvania. Still, I am not one to pretend that I understand how Republican voters think. Maybe they really are finally starting to realize that Trump is simply claiming fraud any time an election doesn't go his way, and without any other credible evidence to back his claims. The Big Lie threatens their right to have their vote counted along with that right for everybody else.

Pa. Senate GOP primary too close to call, recount likely
Source: AP
HARRISBURG, Pa. (AP) — Pennsylvania’s Republican primary for an open U.S. Senate seat is too close to call and is likely headed for a statewide recount to decide the winner of the contest between heart surgeon-turned-TV celebrity Dr. Mehmet Oz and former hedge fund CEO David McCormick. A recount would mean that the outcome of the race might not be known until June 8, the deadline for counties to report their results to the state.

Oz, who was endorsed by former President Donald Trump, led McCormick by 1,079 votes, or 0.08 percentage points, out of 1,340,248 ballots counted as of 5 p.m. Friday. The race is close enough to trigger Pennsylvania’s automatic recount law, with the separation between the candidates inside the law’s 0.5% margin. The Associated Press will not declare a winner in the race until the likely recount is complete.

Both campaigns have hired Washington-based lawyers to lead their recount efforts, and both have hired Philadelphia-based campaign strategists who helped lead the operation to observe vote-counting on Election Day for Donald Trump’s presidential campaign in 2020. The two campaigns already had dozens of lawyers and volunteers fanned out around the presidential battleground state as election workers and election boards toiled through the remaining ballots.

The big field of Republican candidates and their super PACs reported spending more than $70 million during the primary campaign. The winner will face Democratic Lt. Gov. John Fetterman in November’s midterm elections in what Democrats see as their best opportunity to pick up a seat in the closely divided Senate. Fetterman won the Democratic nomination while in the hospital recovering from a stroke four days before the election. The incumbent, Republican Sen. Pat Toomey, is retiring after serving two terms.

What exactly is an extremist? In my eyes anyone that wants to make half or more of our children into members of the lgbt, go behind the backs of parents to go on hormones, silence and censor 40-50 million people online, allow thief's to steal and rob from our stores without prison time and label every white person in this country if they want to feel safe is a rather extreme position. But, hell, that's just me. We all have our opinions on what is extreme.

Caltrek, I like a lot of what you do so I am going to be honest and try to be respectful. I think healthy and honest debate is the best way forward towards working things out.

Herschel Walker, Raphael Warnock to face off in crucial Georgia Senate rac
Source: NBC News
ATLANTA — Former football star Herschel Walker has clinched Georgia’s Republican nomination for Senate, NBC News projects setting up a general election against Sen. Raphael Warnock, the Democratic incumbent who also won his party’s primary Tuesday.

The race is projected to be one of the most competitive in the nation, and will be a rare case of two Black candidates competing in a critical Senate contest. With the Senate split 50-50 between Democrats and Republicans, both parties see Georgia as a must-win.

Deep Republican red for years, the state favored Democrat Joe Biden over then-President Donald Trump by a narrow margin in the 2020 presidential election before sending two Democrats to the Senate — including Warnock in a special election — in 2021.

Now, with Warnock seeking a full term, the GOP has turned to Walker, an icon in the state who won the Heisman trophy as a standout at the University of Georgia. Trump, seeking revenge and influence in a state that’s now a top-tier battleground, encouraged Walker to run. The two have a history: In the 1980s, Walker played for Trump’s New Jersey Generals franchise in the now-defunct United States Football League before moving on to the NFL.

weatheriscool I'm going to be totally honest with you, no-one and I mean no-one wants half of all children to become lgbt. They want all children to have the right to express their own sexuality freely whether they be heterosexual homosexual bisexual asexual whatever as long as that individual has the ability to decide for themselves what they are and no-one else that is the mainstream view, outside of a potentially larger dating pool even bisexual or homosexual people have no reason to wish for a larger number of LGBT people.

Similarly no parent should hold authority over their child's gender or sex, it is down to the individual to determine what they are or are not - this going behind the backs of parents to go on hormones is not want anyone wants either, most would rather a thorough psychological examination of the individual in question followed by whatever treatment the medical professionals deem beneficial for the individual making the decision.

Equally no-one wants to censor 40-50 million people online, we want to censor far, far more than that but websites and social networks for different political interests will always exist to cater to those who have been banned from other sites. This goes for the entirety of the political spectrum, censorship is not and never has been a one way street.

Equally very few people would want a robber not to get jail time, the issue is more complicated than that though as it pertains to what they robbed, why they did it, are they improvished and stealing food to feed themselves or their families? Would you condemn someone as a criminal simply for that? Now if someone tried to rob a car dealership at gunpoint then clearly there is a difference there and even then we need to discuss what their imprisonment would hope to achieve - to reform the individual would be the wish of most people so that they do not take such an action again.

Lastly literally everything and everyone can be labelled, you labelled white people in your own post. People are not anti your wishes to see children protected, your sexuality to remain your own, the role of a society in aiding and reforming it's populace or how to define any of it,

Primary Results 2022: Georgia
May 25, 2022

Introduction:
(CBS) Incumbent Republican Gov. Brian Kemp of Georgia is projected to survive a primary challenge by former Sen. David Perdue, who received former President Donald Trump's biggest endorsement and the most financial help he's given to any candidate so far.

Trump-backed candidates appeared to be foundering Tuesday night in Georgia, although his preferred Senate candidate, Herschel Walker, is projected to win the Republican nomination. But CBS News projected Attorney General Chris Carr survived the challenge from the Trump-backed John Gordon.

And CBS News projected Secretary of State Brad Raffensperger, whom Trump asked in January 2021 to "find" enough votes to overturn the results, will win the Republican nomination over his challenger, Trump-backed U.S. Rep. Jody Hice. He was one of the House Republicans who challenged the election results in Pennsylvania and Arizona on Jan. 6, 2021.

"My thinking was the vast majority of Georgians are looking for honest people for elected office. Someone who would do their job, follow the law, look out for them — regardless of the personal cost to do so," Raffensperger said. "Standing for you, standing for the rule of law and election integrity, and standing for the truth — and not buckling under the pressure is what people want. I was elected to serve the people and so I shall. And so I have."
...
Kemp, meanwhile, will take on Democrat Stacey Abrams, whom he defeated in 2018.

Alabama
By Meridith Conroy
May 24, 2022

(Five Thirty Eight) The Republican primary in Alabama for senator is...still up in the air. Former Business Council of Alabama President Katie Britt has a solid lead with 44 percent, but that’s not enough to avoid a runoff. Rep. Mo Brooks leads former Army helicopter pilot Mike Durant for second place, 29 percent to 24 percent.

In the GOP primary for governor in Alabama, incumbent Kay Ivey is hovering just above the 50 percent threshold she needs to avoid a runoff against either former Ambassador to Slovenia Lindy Blanchard (in second with 19 percent) or businessman Tim James (the son of former Gov. Fob James, in third with 16 percent). [Editor’s Note: ABC News projected that Ivey will win her election. As of 8:40 a.m. ET, Wednesday, she had 54 percent of the vote, well above her other challengers with 94 percent of the expected vote in.
