Although it seems the Russians have learned at least 1 lesson during this war, and that is after you commit mass atrocities you should probably clean up afterwards to it is possibly deniable not like the mess they left at Bucha... which has now killed any chance to get Ukraine to agree to any kind of terms and certainly has decreased the likelihood that Western countries will overlook this...

https://www.ukrinform.net/rubric-ato/34 ... gence.html

They apparently have been digging up people who have been buried and will likely try to deny the amount of people who died here going forward as the death toll is certainly in the tens of thousands.

For all the claims that the Ukrainians are the "Nazis" it is the Russian's who seem to be trying to recreate a small scale Treblinka type operation to cover up their crimes.

Police: More than 900 civilian bodies found in Kyiv region
Source: AP
KYIV, Ukraine (AP) — The bodies of more than 900 civilians have been discovered in the region surrounding the Ukrainian capital following Russia’s withdrawal — most of them fatally shot, police said Friday, an indication that many people were “simply executed.”

The jarring number emerged shortly after Russia’s Defense Ministry promised to step up missile attacks on Kyiv in response to Ukraine’s alleged aggression on Russian territory. That ominous warning followed the stunning loss of Moscow’s flagship in the Black Sea, which a senior U.S. defense official said Friday was indeed hit by at least one Ukrainian missile.

Amid its threats, Moscow continues preparations for a renewed offensive in eastern Ukraine. Fighting also continues in the pummeled southern port city of Mariupol, where locals reported seeing Russian troops digging up bodies.

Around Kyiv, Andriy Nebytov, the head of Kyiv’s regional police force, said bodies were abandoned in the streets or given temporary burials. He cited police data indicating 95% died from gunshot wounds.

Ukrainian Troops Blitz Russian Artillery
Source: Newsweek

Ukrainian troops have reportedly sent Russian artillery troops scrambling after blitzing an enemy gun position.

Video footage of the assault shows a series of shattering blasts, understood to be the guns and ammunition exploding.

The position eventually goes up in an enormous fireball, sending what appear to be ignited shells into the air at random.

snip...

The brigade also joked that they are sending the second-best army in the world to the bottom of the rankings.

Ukrainian governor says Mariupol 'has been wiped off the face of the earth'
Source: Washington Post
As Russia appears poised to capture Mariupol more than six weeks into the invasion, the governor of Ukraine’s Donetsk region said Friday that while Ukrainian troops remain in control of the strategic port city, Mariupol “has been wiped off the face of the earth” by Russian forces.

Pavlo Kyrylenko, the governor, told CNN that troops are still “courageously defending Mariupol” against the Russian forces that have bombarded the city on the Sea of Azov, leaving it in ruins.

“The enemy cannot seize Mariupol. The enemy may seize the land that Mariupol used to stand on, but the city of Mariupol is no more,” Kyrylenko said. “The city of Mariupol has been wiped off the face of the earth by the Russian Federation, by those who will never be able to restore it.”

Russian troops have laid siege to Mariupol for more than a month, cutting its citizens off from food, water, heat and humanitarian aid with few exceptions. Russian troops have been carving sections of the city from Ukrainian control.

Russia loses its EIGHTH general and 34th colonel in Ukraine in the latest hammer blow to Putin's botched invasion
Daily Mail ^ | 4.16.2022 | Will Stewart
https://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/articl ... asion.html

“ Frolov 'sacrificed his life so that children, women and the elderly in Donbas would not hear bombs exploding again”, the St Petersburg governor said as his friend was laid to rest.

The general was from a military family and 'died the death of the brave in battle against Ukrainian nationalists', Alexander Beglov added.

He was 'a true patriot, a brave and courageous man' who 'honestly and to the end fulfilled his military and human duty.

'People will not forget their heroes. Eternal memory to him.'

Russia also lost its 34th colonel of the war, tank battalion commander Miras Bashakov, according to reports today.

I'm guessing that Russia will formally declare war in the coming days and mobilize several hundred thousand men to combat in a bid to completely blitz Ukraine.

I think Russia miscalculated in one major area: they should have done this in 2014. All they accomplished with the Donbas War was rallying Ukraine around a nationalist cause and scoring the military backing of the West. I recall Certain Russian User mentioning years ago his own befuddlement at why Russia didn't mobilize further back then.

Zelensky: Russia killing Ukrainian forces in Mariupol could 'put an end to any format of negotiation
Source: The Hill
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky warned in an interview with Ukrainian media on Saturday that negotiations could come to an end if Moscow kills the country’s remaining forces in the besieged city of Mariupol.

“The destruction of all our guys in Mariupol – what they are doing now – can put an end to any format of negotiations. I think it is their big mistake to say that they really want to end the war,” Zelensky said.

The Ukrainian president also noted that his country would be less likely to negotiate with Russia if Moscow continued to commit war crimes against Ukrainian civilians and soldiers, according to the Presidential Office of Ukraine.

“The stronger we are, the better the outcome of these talks will be. The more Borodianka-like cases appear, there will be no chance that negotiations will be held actually,” Zelensky said in his interview, referring to a town near Kyiv that was occupied for weeks by Russian forces.

U.S. Officials Now Conclude Prized Russian Ship Was Hit by Missiles
by Julia Barens and James Glanz
April 15, 2022

https://www.nytimes.com/2022/04/15/us/p ... raine.html

Extract:
(New York Times) Despite claims by Russia that an accidental fire broke out on the ship, U.S. officials confirmed on Friday that two Ukrainian Neptune missiles had struck the vessel, killing an unknown number of sailors and sending it and its arsenal to the bottom of the Black Sea.
Meanwhile, MSNBC journalists monitoring Russian media report that even Russian TV commentators are attributing the sinking of the Moscow to Ukrainian missiles. So much for Russian military pronouncements on the subject.

Wouldn't they have used tactical nukes by now? For instance in Mariupol.

They probably would have used them by now if it wasn't for the fact they know they might underestimate NATO's willingness to use nukes on Russia immediately afterwards. Although the probability is very low, it's still a real risk. Despite all that has happened, Russia does have self-preservation for its own existence.

Second British soldier captured in Mariupol is paraded on Russian TV
Source: The Guardian/US

A second British soldier fighting with the Ukrainian army has been paraded on Russian television after being captured in the besieged city of Mariupol.

Shaun Pinner said he had been fighting alongside Ukrainian marines when Vladimir Putin’s forces invaded nearly eight weeks ago.

The 48-year-old former British soldier appeared tired and bruised in a short propaganda video aired by Russian media on Saturday night.

In the video, he says: “Hi, I’m Shaun Pinner. I am a citizen of the UK. I was captured in Mariupol. I am part of the 36 Brigade First Battalion Ukrainian Marines.

“I was fighting in Mariupol for five to six weeks and now I’m in Donetsk People’s Republic.”

It is not known when the video was filmed or what led to Pinner’s capture. He was fighting alongside his friend Aiden Aslin, 28, from Nottinghamshire, who is thought to have surrendered to the Russian military last week after his battalion ran out of ammunition.

Dramatic images appear to show sinking Russian warship Moskva
Dramatic pictures - and a credible video - allegedly showing the Russian warship Moskva before it sank last week have appeared online.

The video and images match the shape and design of the missile cruiser.

Russia says a fire onboard caused ammunitions to explode and the vessel sank as it was being towed in a storm. Ukraine says it hit it with missiles.

The new images do not immediately back the claims of either side - but there is no sign of a storm at the time.

More and More Russian Soldiers Reportedly Refusing to Fight In Ukraine
by Robert Coalson
April 18, 2022

https://www.eurasiareview.com/18042022- ... n-ukraine/

Introduction:
(Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty via Eurasian Review) — “They called me one morning from the office of the division commander in Amur Oblast, where Pavlik served,” said a woman from Russia’s Tambov region who asked to be identified only by her first name, Yelena. “The man said: ‘Do you know that they are searching for your son, that he is AWOL?’ Pavlik was supposed to board a troop train, but he didn’t. And five other soldiers were with him.”

Yelena’s son, Pavel, was serving in the Far Eastern Amur region when Russia invaded Ukraine on February 24. Almost immediately, his unit was sent to the front, and he served almost 40 days in combat. Then his unit was sent back to Russia to regroup, Yelena told RFE/RL’s North.Realities. When his unit was preparing to return to Ukraine, Pavel refused.

“If he doesn’t want to go back, am I supposed to push him, to tell him, ‘Grab your weapon and go,’” Yelena said. “Those who haven’t been there have no right judge those who have.”

Yelena’s son is one of a significant but unknown number of Russian contract soldiers who have refused to either fight in Ukraine in the first place or who have fought and do not want to return.

Lawyer Pavel Chikov, founder of the Agora legal-aid NGO, has written on Telegram that more than 1,000 military personnel and National Guard troops from at least seven regions have refused to go to Ukraine.
Don't mourn, organize.
