Introduction:

(Axios) Tropical Storm Beryl, which formed Friday night, is intensifying in an exceedingly rare location for the month of June — the central tropical Atlantic Ocean.

Threat level: The storm is forecast to become a major hurricane of Category 3 intensity before arriving in the Windward Islands Sunday night into Monday, where hurricane watches are being issued.

• It's the second named storm in what is expected to be an extremely active season.

State of play: As of 11am ET on Saturday, Beryl was located about 820 miles east-southeast of Barbados, moving west at 23 mph.

• Its maximum sustained winds were 65 mph.
