EV Sales Broke Records in First Quarter of 2023
Kelly Blue Book 4/12/2023

Americans bought more than 250,000 electric vehicles (EVs) in the first 3 months of 2023. They’re on pace to purchase more than a Million EVs annually for the First time.

Kelley Blue Book parent company Cox Automotive reports that Americans purchased 42 different models of EVs in the first quarter. A year ago, that same figure was 34. “Choice is expected to expand further in every quarter of 2023,” the company says.

Counting all EVs, including GMC Hummers and Mazda MX-30s, the Kelley Blue Book team estimates EV sales in Q1 increased by 44.9% year over year and reached 258,882, a record quarter for the U.S. market.

Tesla Applies to Expand GigaShanghai to 1.75 Million Cars Per Year
May 18, 2023 by Brian Wang
https://www.nextbigfuture.com/2023/05/t ... -year.html
In China, Tesla has applied for regulatory clearance to expand Giga Shanghai powertrain production capacity to 1.75 million (from 1.25 million), and to begin producing for the first time pouch-type battery cells (20,000-amp-hours of cells).

There was a public notice in the Shanghai district. It described a potential expansion would give the Shanghai Gigafactory the capacity to produce 1.75 million powertrain units annually, up from 1.25 million currently.

Tesla is also looking to set up new facilities to recycle chemicals for waste-water treatment in the plant.

Musk and Ford reach agreement to open up Tesla Superchargers to other EV's

https://finance.yahoo.com/news/tesla-fo ... 13445.html

(Reuters) -Ford Motor Co said on Thursday it has agreed with Tesla Inc to allow its electric vehicle owners to gain access to more than 12,000 Tesla Superchargers in North America in early 2024.

A Tesla-developed adapter will provide Ford EVs fitted with the Combined Charging System (CCS) port access to Tesla’s V3 Superchargers. Ford will equip future EVs with a charge port, removing the need for an adapter for direct access to Tesla Superchargers, starting in 2025.

"The idea is that we don't want the Tesla supercharger network to be like a walled garden. We want it to be something that is supportive of electrification and sustainable transport in general," Tesla CEO Elon Musk said during an online Twitter Spaces conversation with Ford CEO Jim Farley.

Bizarre 460-foot "battery tanker" set to ship electrons by 2026
By Loz Blain
May 30, 2023
https://newatlas.com/energy/powerx-battery-tanker/
Japanese company PowerX is moving ahead with its strange plan to build a "mobile power station" in the form of a 140-meter (460-ft) electric "battery tanker," which will carry 241 megawatt-hours of renewable energy across the sea over short distances.

The idea here is simple enough: renewable energy is often generated a fair distance from where it's most needed, so let's build an electric ship full of batteries, and jolly well ship it there.

Why not just put down an underwater cable? That's a fine question. PowerX points out that Japan is surrounded by deep seas, and prone to earthquakes, and says in a press release that "the ship-based solution resolves issues such as long downtime from undersea cable malfunctions and repairs, as well as the high costs associated with ultra-high voltage connections and substations."

Toyota shares surge 5% after announcing plans for next-gen battery EVs

The new unit, named BEV Factory, is aiming to produce electric vehicles with a range of 1,000 kilometers (620 miles).

BEV Factory will introduce a full lineup of battery electric vehicles with “next generation” batteries from 2026.

This continues a more aggressive push by the Japanese automaker toward all-electric vehicles under new CEO Koji Sato.

Mercedes reinvents the experimental C111 as an all-electric stunner
By C.C. Weiss
June 15, 2023
https://newatlas.com/automotive/mercede ... ne-eleven/
Mercedes-Benz has revived one of its great experimental vehicles, reinterpreting the gorgeously wedged C111 as a modern-day gull-winged supercar. Instead of exploring Wankels and turbos, the new Vision One-Eleven dives deeper into the worlds of all-electric performance, autonomous driving and augmented reality. It's centered around a pair of potent YASA axial-flux motors and features a UI blending next-gen AR with old-school digital. The dramatic two-seater promises to steal any crowd's attention, whether it's testing on the track or simply standing still on stage.

The original Mercedes-Benz C111 was born in the wedge-happy days of 1969. Unlike famous wedge concept cars of the time, the C111 was more than just a show-stealing design study, created as an experimental testbed for new technologies of the time. In fact, it wasn't just a single car but a series of 16, with which Mercedes explored Wankel and turbodiesel engines and polymer-based body construction. The car became something of a Mercedes icon, owing to its unique styling, extreme aerodynamics, cutting-edge experimental technologies and distinctive orange-and-black paint.

With the way the trend is going, I speculate there will be an EV with at least 1000 miles range before 2030. With further advances in wireless charging, I think there will be an option to switch to infinite mileage when the vehicle is on certain roads equipped with inductive charging, which is made possible by the EV receiving more power than it expends up to a certain speed. By then, aside from classic car collectors, who would see any appeal in buying a combustion engine vehicle?

Some Republicans who will continue to see EVs as "woke", etc.

You think I'm joking? The entire state of Wyoming, for instance, is banning the sale of EVs.

Once they realize their economy is lagging compared to other states because running on gasoline/petrol is more costly than electricity, they'll reverse the law quietly hoping no one notices.
