EU emissions fall again, reaching 40% below 1990 levels

22nd April 2026

The European Union continues to cut greenhouse gas emissions at a steady pace, driven by cleaner energy, improved efficiency, and long-term policy efforts. New figures highlight both the scale of progress so far and the challenges that remain as the bloc moves toward its 2050 climate neutrality goal.

When it comes to environmental protection, the European Union (EU) stands among the world's leading regions, with a long track record of ambitious climate and energy policies. Greenhouse gas emissions from those countries that today make up the EU peaked during the late 1970s and have followed a broadly downward trend ever since.

Now, the bloc has recorded another significant drop, with a 3% decline between 2023 and 2024. This latest fall brings total reductions to 40% below 1990 levels, according to new data analysed by the European Environment Agency and submitted to the United Nations.

Massive New England solar-battery hybrid project gains grid connection approval

Apr 20, 2026

Global renewable energy developer Recurrent Energy has landed a grid connection approval for a massive solar-battery hybrid project in New South Wales’ (NSW) biggest renewable energy zone.

The Sundown project in the New England REZ is made up of a 360 megawatt (MW) solar project and a 150 MW, four hour battery.

“Recurrent Energy Australia has successfully secured Grid Connection Approval for Sundown Energy Park under clause 5.3.4 of the National Electricity Rules, marking a key milestone in one of the country’s most significant hybrid renewable projects,” the developer, a subsidiary of Canadian Solar, said on LinkedIn.

I think shutting down nuclear was a mistake. Germany would probably be 15-20% fossil fuels right now if they hadn't.

£12,000 solar-panel grants for thousands of homes confirmed – who is eligible

Around £15bn has been earmarked for grants and loans to install solar panels, heat pumps and batteries to help lower bills

May 14, 2026 10:13 am

Households will be given £15bn in grants and loans to install solar panels, heat pumps and batteries to help lower bills, under new legislation to boost energy resilience in the UK.

A new Energy Independence Bill, announced as part of the King’s Speech, will also seek to shave money off people’s bills if they use power during sunny or windy periods when the grid is producing excess electricity.

But the most eye-catching element of the new legislation is the creation of the new Warm Homes Agency, which will oversee the Government’s vast rollout of energy electrification over the coming years.

Under the Warm Homes Plan, around £5bn will be made available to fund free home improvement plans for low-income families. The packages would be tailored to what is most suitable for people’s homes, whether that is installing solar panels, heat pumps, insulation, or draught proofing. It is expected that households with a total income of around £35,000 or less would receive a grant of between £9,000 and £12,000.

The plan will also provide around £2bn of government funding to back no and low-interest loans for higher-income households to fit heat pumps, solar panels, and batteries to help take them off the “roller coaster of fossil fuels”. Ministers had hoped to fast-track the rollout of the plan to help insulate households from the impact of higher energy bills later this year in the wake of the US-Iran war.
