January 3, 2024

Introduction:
(Al Jazeera) Dozens of people have been killed and more than 100 others wounded in explosions near the tomb of former Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) General Qassem Soleimani during a ceremony marking four years since his assassination.

Two explosions were heard in the southeastern city of Kerman on Wednesday afternoon near the burial place of Soleimani, who was killed in a US drone strike, according to Iranian media reports.

At least 103 people were killed in the blasts and 141 others wounded, according to Iranian state media and the emergency services.

It was not immediately clear what caused the blasts. Officials have blamed a “terrorist attack”.

Videos showed ambulances arriving at the scene and taking away injured people on stretchers. Kerman is about 820 kilometres (510 miles) southeast of the capital, Tehran.

EL MIRAGE, Calif. — Deputies found the bodies of six people at a remote dirt crossroads in the Mojave Desert in Southern California, a scene described as so grisly that TV stations blurred some of the images captured by their helicopters overhead.
San Bernardino County Sheriff’s deputies responding to a request for a wellness check reached the area off Highway 395 outside the community of El Mirage around 8:15 p.m. Tuesday and found five of the bodies. The sixth was found Wednesday morning, sheriff’s spokesperson Mara Rodriguez said.

7 arrested in attack on NYPD officers near migrant shelter in Times Square

Source: CBS News
NEW YORK -- Two more suspects are under arrest Thursday for allegedly attacking two NYPD officers outside a migrant center in Times Square.

So far, police have arrested seven of the 12 suspects accused in the attack on Jan. 27, but NYPD officials have blasted the Manhattan District Attorney's Office after some were set free on bail. Surveillance video showed a group of men assaulting officers in front of a migrant center on West 42nd Street, police said.

The video appeared to show two officers in a struggle with a man wearing yellow, followed by a barrage of people taking turns punching and kicking a lieutenant and another officer.

"You want to know why our cops are getting assaulted? There's no consequences and we must change this," said NYPD Chief of Patrol John Chell.

Three people wounded in Paris knife attack at railway station
Sat 3 Feb 2024 08.33 GMT

Three people have been wounded in a knife attack in the Gare de Lyon railway station in Paris and the suspect has been arrested, police have said.

Two of the victims suffered light wounds while the third person was more seriously injured but was not in a life-threatening situation, police added.

The detained man, whose nationality was not revealed, went on a stabbing spree at about 8am (0700 GMT) at the Gare de Lyon, which serves domestic trains as well as those heading to Switzerland and Italy.

“The suspect did not cry out [any religious slogans] during his attack,” a police source said. “He showed the police an Italian driving licence.”

The area in the station between halls one and three were temporarily closed, the rail operator SNCF said on X.

Police kill axe-wielding man who took 15 passengers hostage on train in Switzerland
6 hours ago

A man who used an axe and knife to seize more than a dozen hostages on a Swiss train has been killed, police said.

Swiss police say a 32-year-old Iranian asylum-seeker was killed and no passengers were injured.

The man took the hostages early Thursday evening and police, alerted by passengers, sealed off the area while the train was stopped in the town of Essert-sous-Champvert, police in the French-speaking Vaud region said Friday.

The man, speaking Farsi and English, demanded that the train engineer join the 15 hostages.

Nearly four hours after the incident began, police stormed the train after trying to negotiate with the man through an interpreter.

Political violence adviser urges new police powers to protect MPs
22 hours ago

Police should get extra powers to tackle protests outside Parliament, the author of a government-commissioned review has urged.

Crossbench peer Lord Walney said MPs needed protecting from "intimidation" that could influence how they vote.

His comments come after Commons Speaker Sir Lindsay Hoyle cited the threat to politicians in his controversial handling of a debate on Gaza.

It has reignited the heightened debate in recent years over the safety of MPs.

Asked about Lord Walney's recommendations, Home Secretary James Cleverly said he expected police to take action when protesters gathered outside MPs' homes with the aim of "distorting" how they voted.

Haiti violence: Gangs threaten Haiti takeover after mass jailbreak
49 minutes ago

The government of Haiti declared a 72-hour state of emergency on Sunday after armed gangs stormed a major Port-au-Prince prison. At least 12 people were killed and about 3,700 inmates escaped in the jailbreak.

Gang leaders say they want to force the resignation of Prime Minister Ariel Henry, who had travelled abroad.

The groups aiming to oust him control around 80% of Port-au-Prince.

Gang violence has plagued Haiti for years.

A government statement said two prisons - one in the capital and the other in nearby Croix des Bouquets - were stormed over the weekend.
