Charity refuses to delete clip of Holocaust survivor confronting Home Secretary

A charity which supports torture victims has defied Home Office demands to delete a video of Suella Braverman being confronted by a Holocaust survivor over her language on immigration.

Freedom From Torture has said the Home Secretary should be “ashamed” of her “dehumanising” rhetoric and it will not be “pressured into helping her hide it” by taking down the clip.

The video shows 83-year-old Holocaust survivor Joan Salter confronting the Government minister during a meeting in her Fareham constituency in Hampshire on Friday evening.

The Home Office has said the one-minute video “misrepresents the interaction” because it presents selected excerpts of Ms Braverman’s response, which was several minutes long.

During the exchange, Ms Salter, who has been recognised with an MBE for her work on Holocaust education, likened Ms Braverman’s language on migrants attempting to cross the English Channel to that used by the Nazis.

Sunak's popularity falls with majority of Britons wanting change at next election, poll finds

Prime Minister Rishi Sunak’s popularity has fallen, according to a new poll, with the majority of Britons saying it is time for a change of government at the next general election.

The latest Ipsos Political Monitor, taken from January 18 to 25, showed just 10% think the Conservatives have done a good job in government and there is no need for a change at the next election.

15% said the Tories have done a poor job but the next election is not the right time for change.

Meanwhile, 11% think that the Tories have done a good job but it is still time for a change.

55% think the Conservatives have done a poor job and it is time for a change at the next election.

MPs' pay will increase by 2.9% in April

MPs will receive a 2.9% pay increase from April, taking their salary from £84,144 to £86,584.

The Independent Parliamentary Standards Authority (Ipsa), which sets MPs' pay, said this was in line with the average public sector workers' rise in 2022/23.

The government's "evolving approach to public sector pay" had been a factor, Ipsa chairman Richard Lloyd said.

Rail workers, nurses, ambulance staff, civil servants and teachers have taken part in strikes over pay recently.

Households across the country have been struggling with cost-of-living pressures, including high energy prices and high inflation.

Nicola Sturgeon to resign as Scottish first minister

Nicola Sturgeon is to resign as Scotland’s first minister, the BBC has announced.

The Scottish National Party leader is expected to make the announcement at a hastily-arranged news conference in Edinburgh.

It is not clear exactly when she will leave office.

It's really unfortunate to me that Scotland and the UK at large is so mired at times in social issues of various kinds instead of greater material matters like the ecosystem, NHS, class inequality and scientific and cultural development in industry and the arts. That a minister can be sacked merely over so much of the population being blatantly and unapologetically sexist is utterly depressing. Not to mention the suicide inducing state of the NHS for trans brits.

We were doing quite well, and progressing as a nation, until about 2010, when people felt the need to put a bunch of corrupt, evil, far-right psychopaths in charge of the UK. It's been downhill ever since, and in free-fall after the self-immolation of Brexit.

There are just 11 weeks until the Tory voter-ID law kicks in – and Rishi Sunak will pay the price

As a fan of Luke Skywalker, it won’t have escaped Rishi Sunak’s attention that this year’s local elections fall on “Star Wars Day”.

But while May the 4th (yes, it’s a play on the line “May the force be with you”) will be a global celebration of the famous movie, polling day in England may not have a happy ending for the Conservatives.

Sunak is not only on course for vaporisation in his first national election as PM, he’s also facing accusations of trying to desperately reduce the scale of the defeat by imposing compulsory “voter ID” that could exclude nearly two million voters from the franchise.

With just over 11 weeks to polling day, the countdown clock is ticking towards this huge shake-up in the way we all cast our ballots – but the worries about “voter suppression” are increasing rather than decreasing.

Stuart Andrew, the minister for civil society, tried to do his bit to raise public awareness of the changes by tweeting that specified proof of identity will be required for everyone who turns up to a polling station on 4 May. No photo ID, no vote.
