When I was younger, I watched the German submarine war drama, Das Boot (1981).

And I watched it again more recently.

The ending is one of the few scenes of any TV series that made me cry.

*SPOILER*:

Even though they're Germans (i.e. our enemies in WW2), you really get to know the characters, and their personal struggles – they don't even seem like Nazis at all. After many episodes of patrolling around European waters, during which they are VERY nearly sunk, they finally return home and receive a heroes' welcome.

"Wow, isn't that wonderful," you think. It's all over, they can return to their families and enjoy the rest of their lives.

Except... here's what happens. The final two characters we see are a journalist (who accompanied the crew on their epic voyage), as he approaches the submarine's captain.

If it makes you feel better, the fact that the sub sank in the harbor means it could probably be raised, repaired, and sent back into service. German resources were so tight during the War that they couldn't afford to throw anything away.
