First supercomputer capable of equaling the synaptic operations of the human brain being built

The neuromorphic supercomputer will manage 228 trillion synaptic operations per second, which is on par with the estimated number of operations in the human brain.

The world's first supercomputer capable of simulating networks at the scale of the human brain has been announced by researchers at the International Centre for Neuromorphic Systems (ICNS) at Western Sydney University.

DeepSouth uses a neuromorphic system which mimics biological processes, using hardware to efficiently emulate large networks of spiking neurons at 228 trillion synaptic operations per second - rivalling the estimated rate of operations in the human brain.

The supercomputer is aptly named DeepSouth, paying homage to IBM's TrueNorth system, which initiated efforts to build machines simulating large networks of spiking neurons, and Deep Blue, which was the first computer to become a world chess champion. The name is also a nod to its geographical location.

Hybrid Biocomputer Fuses Human Brain Tissue with Computer Chips

Introduction:

(IFL Science) Scientists have fused human brain tissue to a computer chip, creating a mini cyborg in a petri dish that can perform math equations and recognize speech.

Dubbed Brainoware, the system consists of brain cells artificially grown from human stem cells, which have been fostered to develop into a brain-like tissue. This mini-brain organoid is then hooked up to traditional hardware where it acts as a physical reservoir that can capture and remember the information it receives from the computer inputs.

The researchers wanted to explore the idea of exploiting the efficiency of the human brain’s architecture to supercharge computational hardware. The rise of artificial intelligence (AI) has massively increased the demand for computing power, but it’s somewhat limited by the energy efficiency and performance of the standard silicon chips.

"We wanted to ask the question of whether we can leverage the biological neural network within the brain organoid for computing. This is just proof-of-concept to show we can do the job," Feng Guo, study author and a bioengineer in the Department of Intelligent Systems Engineering at Indiana University, told Tech Xplore.

To flex the muscles of the hybrid bio-computer, the researchers presented it with 240 audio clips of people saying different Japanese vowel sounds. Remarkably, the system is capable of learning the different sounds and recognizing them with approximately 78 percent accuracy.

Scientists Contact Whales in World-First Communication Experiment

Their mission: Communicate with whales. And they did just that.

In a landmark experiment, the team had a 20-minute conversation with a humpback whale named Twain in her own language.

Twain and the scientists didn't talk about the weather or the latest fish gossip — we're still a long way from that level of understanding.

Two weeks ago, a rumor circulated that Lenovo was about to introduce a laptop with a transparent display. We thought it sounded like a cool gimmick at the time, but we'd wait and see what Lenovo has in store for us. Today, at the Mobile World Congress (MWC) trade show in Barcelona, the company officially pulled the wraps off it, and our thoughts have not changed. It looks wicked cool, but it's hard to imagine anyone using one in the real world soon. Still, it's a novel concept, and perhaps it'll be useful 10 years from now.
