A US shop owner was shot dead after a dispute over a Pride flag displayed outside her business, police say.
Laura Ann Carleton, 66, was found with a bullet wound at her Mag Pi shop in Cedar Glen, California, on Friday.
A suspect - who fled the scene on foot - was killed by police when found nearby, allegedly still armed.
Ms Carleton was described as a "wonderful friend" by Hollywood director Paul Feig, who posted an image of them together.
The suspect made "disparaging remarks" about the rainbow flag before shooting the victim, police said. She was pronounced dead at the scene.

A Federal Judge in Georgia, Judge Sarah E. Geraghty, has blocked a gender affirming care ban in the state from taking effect. The bill responsible for the ban is SB140, a bill passed in March of this year. In hearing a challenge to the ban, the judge evaluated the constitutionality of the law as well as evidence for and against gender affirming care to make a final decision. In blocking the law via temporary injunction, the judge assigned low weight to the anti-trans experts and rebuked common talking points used to justify such bans.
The law banning gender-affirming care is the only one of its kind passed in a state carried by Joe Biden. Enacted on March 22, it featured a series of "legislative findings" intended as factual statements to be considered in court. These include false claims that a majority of transgender youth eventually reject their trans identity and that therapy alone can sufficiently address their needs, insinuating support for conversion therapy. While these statements were presumably added to defend the law in court, the judge dismissed them as lacking credibility.

German Family Minister Lisa Paus said a new law easing the path for individuals to officially change their gender had been approved by the Cabinet on Wednesday, hailing it as "a big moment" for transgender and intersex people.
The proposed "Self-Determination Act" allows for changes to be made in a simple procedure at government registry offices.
Paus said the reform served "to protect minorities who have been discriminated against for a long time and is socio-political progress."
Under current rules, individuals must submit two psychological reports to change the entries with a district court making the final decision. People who have gone through the process have complained that it is lengthy, costly and humiliating.

Justices on Monday issued near unanimous decision

The Brazilian Supreme Federal Court this week ruled homophobia now punishable with up to five years in prison.
The justices on Monday ruled by a 9-1 margin. Their decision equates homophobia to racism in terms of prison time.
The Supreme Federal Court in 2019 criminalized homophobia and transphobia. The Brazilian Association of Gays, Lesbians, Bisexuals, Travestis, Transsexuals and Intersex People petitioned for additional protections and penalties.
“Such a decision brings legal certainty and reinforces the court’s understanding with regard to the principle of equality and nondiscrimination,” said the National LGBTI+ Alliance, a Brazilian LGBTQ and intersex rights group, in a statement. “It is an important step in the civilizing process and in the fight against hatred in Brazilian society.”
Congresswoman Erika Hilton, who is transgender, in a tweet described the ruling as a “victory against LGBTphobia.”
The Supreme Federal Court issued its ruling less than eight months after President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva took office.

A decision by the city of Essex, Iowa, not to allow an LGBTQ+ organization from a neighboring town to participate in its annual Labor Day parade prompted a protest from the ACLU.
Jessa Bears, a member of Shenandoah Pride, said the group learned Thursday that it won't be allowed to march in the annual parade. The group, which supports rights for lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender individuals, notified the parade organizer in June that it intended to participate in Monday's parade.
"We are sort of a ragtag group but we had a convertible ready, a banner and maybe 20 volunteers who said they would march," Bears said Sunday. "It really wasn't going to be huge, but we did want to participate. We bought candy and stickers to hand out."
The American Civil Liberties Union said it has sent a warning to Calvin Kinney, the mayor of Essex, and Malhoun Sorensen, the city attorney, condemning the decision to prevent Shenandoah Pride from participating. The letter asks "the City of Essex to rescind its prohibition and permit Shenandoah Pride to join the Labor Day Parade. Failing to do so will violate the rights of its citizens, potentially expose it to substantial liability, and be an injustice to the constitutional rights of every person and every group to participate in its public events."

'Safe and Supportive Schools Act' heads to California governor
https://www.courthousenews.com/safe-and ... -governor/
SACRAMENTO, Calif. (CN) — A bill that will establish LGBTQ+ inclusive online training curriculum for teachers is on its way to California Governor Gavin Newsom.
The state's Assembly on Monday passed Assembly Bill 5, called the “Safe and Supportive Schools Act,” in a 49-0 vote. The bill requires the state Department of Education to develop the online training and delivery platform by July 1, 2025. Local educational agencies would provide at least an hour of training each year to certificated staff starting with the 2025-26 school year through the 2029-30 year.
The training would serve students in grades 7 through 12.
The bill’s author — Assemblyman Rick Chavez Zbur, a Hollywood Democrat — has said it’s meant to give teachers and staff professional development opportunities that will help foster inclusive classroom environments for all students, including those who identify as LGBTQ+.

Pentagon to review cases of LGBTQ+ veterans denied honorable discharges under "don't ask, don't tell

Thousands of LGBTQ+ veterans who were kicked out of the military because of their sexuality could see their honor restored under a new initiative the Defense Department is set to announce Wednesday, on the 12th anniversary of the repeal of "don't ask, don't tell" policy banning gays and lesbians from openly serving in the military, according to a senior Pentagon official. Before the repeal of the ban, tens of thousands of LGBTQ+ service members were forced out of the military "under other than honorable conditions," rather than with an honorable discharge.
As CBS News documented in a nine-month investigation, many LGBTQ+ veterans found that without an honorable discharge, they were deprived of access to the full spectrum of veterans benefits, including VA loan programs, college tuition assistance, health care and some jobs. In a statement commemorating the anniversary of the repeal, Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin acknowledged the military fell short in correcting the harms of its past policies against LGBTQ+ service members.
"For decades, our LGBTQ+ Service members were forced to hide or were prevented from serving altogether," Austin said. "Even still, they selflessly put themselves in harm's way for the good of our country and the American people. Unfortunately, too many of them were discharged from the military based on their sexual orientation — and for many this left them without access to the benefits and services they earned." Since the ban was lifted, the military has allowed these LGBTQ+ veterans to try to secure an honorable discharge, but CBS News also found in its investigation that the military's existing process for this is complicated, emotionally taxing and places the burden on the veteran to prove there was discrimination.
To help ease that burden, the Defense Department plans to conduct a review of veterans' records who served under "don't ask, don't tell" for a possible recommendation of a discharge upgrade. This means that these veterans would not have to apply for the upgrade themselves, a process that both veterans and experts have said is often unsuccessful without the help of a lawyer. The department is also launching a website Wednesday with resources dedicated to LGBTQ+ veterans who believe they were wrongfully discharged for their sexuality.

Besides the trolling they are doing it is incredible how fast the trans folks have moved since Bruce Jenner was woman of the year in 2015 with Lady Valor who de transed back into a dude back in 2013. In the span of 8 years or 10 if you count Lady Valor women have been sidelined fast. Its precisely why that rah rah woman power bs was so incredibly annoying to me since the 1990s. It was allowed by dudes until something happened that caused 2015 to 2023 rapid sidelining of women's rights.
So yeah just like the female special forces that only happens when standards are dropped or even just regular female soldier its a very arrainged lie for women and they believe it regardless of reality they deal with every day.

California Gov. Gavin Newsom signs bills to enhance the state's protections for LGBTQ+ people

SACRAMENTO, Calif. (AP) — California Gov. Gavin Newsom signed several bills Saturday aimed at bolstering the state’s protections for LGBTQ+ people, a day after issuing a controversial veto that was criticized by advocates.
The new laws include legislation that focuses on support for LGBTQ+ youth. One law sets timelines for required cultural competency training for public school teachers and staff, while another creates an advisory task force to determine the needs of LGBTQ+ students and help advance supportive initiatives. A third requires families to show that they can and are willing to meet the needs of a child in foster care regardless of their sexual orientation or gender identity.
“California is proud to have some of the most robust laws in the nation when it comes to protecting and supporting our LGBTQ+ community, and we’re committed to the ongoing work to create safer, more inclusive spaces for all Californians,” Newsom said in a statement. “These measures will help protect vulnerable youth, promote acceptance, and create more supportive environments in our schools and communities.”
The governor also signed legislation that requires schools serving first through 12th grade to have at least one gender-neutral bathroom available for students by 2026. The law was spurred by a Southern California school district that instituted a policy requiring schools to tell parents when their children change their pronouns or use a bathroom of a gender other than the one listed on their official paperwork. A judge halted the policy after California Attorney General Rob Bonta sued the Chino Valley Unified School District. The lawsuit is ongoing.
