Hamas, Islamic Jihad reject giving up power in return for permanent ceasefire, Egyptian sources say

CAIRO, Dec 25 (Reuters) - Hamas and the allied Islamic Jihad have rejected an Egyptian proposal that they relinquish power in the Gaza Strip in return for a permanent ceasefire, two Egyptian security sources told Reuters on Monday.

Both groups, which have been holding separate talks with Egyptian mediators in Cairo, rejected offering any concessions beyond the possible release of more hostages seized on Oct. 7 when militants broke into southern Israel, killing 1,200 people.

Egypt proposed a "vision", also backed by Qatari mediators, that would involve a ceasefire in exchange for the release of more hostages, and lead to a broader agreement involving a permanent ceasefire along with an overhaul of leadership in Gaza, which is currently led by Hamas.

Egypt proposed elections while offering assurances to Hamas that its members would not be chased or prosecuted, but the Islamist group rejected any concessions other than hostage releases, the sources said. More than 100 hostages are still believed to be held in Gaza.

I guess Israel will finish razing Gaza into the ground.

Israel simply shouldn't be allowed to murder innocent people like this. They should be given a choice, 1. Support two states with the international community assuring a sound and stable government or 2 they should take the land and the people and give up their religious bigotry. No one has a right to kill people like this.

Poll: 83% of Israelis Support Voluntary Emigration from Gaza
The Direct Polls survey that was published last Thursday (Direct Polls: Gantz and Bibi Neck-and-Neck, Smotrich Beats the Threshold) included the question: “To what degree do you support encouraging the voluntary emigration of Gaza Strip residents?”

Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich stated on November 14: “I welcome the initiative of the voluntary evacuation of Gaza Arabs to the countries of the world. This is the right humanitarian solution for the residents of Gaza and the entire region after 75 years of poverty and suffering. Most of the population of Gaza is the fourth and fifth generation of the 1948 refugees, who, instead of being rehabilitated a long time ago on a personal and human basis like hundreds of millions of refugees all over the world, were held hostage in Gaza in poverty and overcrowding and were a symbol of the desire to destroy the State of Israel and return the refugees to Jaffa, Haifa, Acre, and Tiberias.”

The idea of removing all or some of the Arabs from Eretz Israel has been debated since before the establishment of the Jewish State. The British Zionist leader Israel Zangwill suggested in 1904 that the Arabs must be expelled by force, and Baron Edmund James de Rothschild was prepared to pay them to leave willingly. Ze’ev Jabotinsky in 1937 supported the voluntary emigration of the Arabs. One year earlier, the Peel Commission which proposed dividing the country into Arab and Jewish states, also proposed the evacuation of Arabs from the Jewish to the Arab territory, which received the enthusiastic support of David Ben Gurion.

The situation on the ground in Gaza, especially in Gaza City and the other cities of the northern Strip makes the return of more than a million Arabs to their homes impossible. Those homes no longer exist, nor does any semblance of an infrastructure. Even if Hamas is defeated tomorrow and the IDF lets up the fighting, and even if the needed billions of dollars are made available, rebuilding northern Gaza would take years.

I think a 2-state solution is still feasible after some political wrangling but it'll be just between Israel and West Palestine. My guess is Gaza is likely to be absorbed into Israel, or managed as an occupied territory for the foreseeable future.

Israel-Gaza war: Netanyahu vows to intensify campaign

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has said Israel will intensify its fight against Hamas in the coming days.

He told members of his party that he had visited Gaza on Monday morning and that Israel's military campaign there was "not close to being over".

His comments come days after the US secretary of state said Israel should lower the intensity of its strikes.

The war began on 7 October after Hamas led a deadly attack on communities inside Israel.

Gaza's Hamas-run health ministry said on Monday that some 20,674 Palestinians had been killed in Israeli bombardments since then. It says most of the fatalities have been women and children.

Israel-Gaza war will continue for months, IDF chief warns

Israel's war with Hamas militants in Gaza will continue for "many more months", Israel's army chief has said.

"There are no magic solutions," Herzi Halevi told reporters. On Monday PM Benjamin Netanyahu warned that the campaign was "not close to being over".

Israel says it hit more than 100 sites on Tuesday. It is reportedly extending ground operations to central Gaza.

Gaza's Hamas-run health ministry says 20,915 Palestinians have been killed in more than 11 weeks of fighting.

The war began on 7 October after Hamas led a wave of deadly attacks on communities inside Israel. About 1.9 million have been internally displaced by Israeli bombardments since then, the UN says.
