Source: AP

Nine people were shot and wounded, including two juveniles, early Wednesday in Washington, D.C., police said.

Shortly before 1 a.m., police responded to a report of a shooting on Meade Street in the northeastern quadrant of the U.S. capital, Assistant Chief Leslie Parsons of the Metropolitan Police Department said in a statement on Twitter.

Upon their arrival officers discovered multiple shooting victims, including a 9-year-old and a 17-year-old, Parsons said.

A dark colored SUV seen driving through the neighborhood, stopped and then shot at the victims outside enjoying the July Fourth holiday, Parsons said, calling the shooting targeted.

Philadelphia mass shooting suspect told police he did it to clean up the neighborhood, sources say
The man accused of fatally shooting five people in Philadelphia on Monday night told police in sum and substance that he carried out the attack to clean up the neighborhood, two law enforcement sources told CNN.

Authorities are also investigating a since-deleted social media page believed to belong to the accused gunman, 40-year-old Kimbrady Carriker, that includes a series of posts about guns, the Second Amendment and the “loss of freedoms,” according to a law enforcement source.

The most recent public post on the page was made at 10:49 a.m. ET Monday and showed a video advertisement for a tactical weapons accessories company. The video shows a man in tactical gear, holding what appears to be a military-style rifle.

In May, Carriker shared posts from pro-gun groups supporting former President Donald Trump and the Second Amendment. In June, he shared a mocking video of a speech by President Joe Biden and added his view that Biden was trying to “take our arms.”

El Paso Walmart mass shooter Patrick Crusius sentenced 90 consecutive life sentences
Source: NBC News

The Texas man who fatally shot 23 people at an El Paso Walmart in a targeted attack against people of Mexican descent was sentenced Friday to 90 consecutive life sentences.

Patrick Crusius, of Allen, agreed in February to the back-to-back life sentences when he pleaded guilty to 90 federal counts, including 45 hate crime charges.

He traveled almost 600 miles from North Texas to El Paso before opening fire on shoppers on Aug. 3, 2019, with a WASR-10 rifle. Minutes before the attack, he posted a hate-filled racist screed online in which he referred to an “invasion” of immigrants to the United States, the Justice Department said.

The department has said Crusius, who admitted to police he was the shooter, is a self-described white nationalist. Sentencing began Wednesday, and for days relatives of those killed spoke to Crusius about their anger and about the damage he did.

The US sets a grim milestone with a new record for the deadliest six months of mass killings
NEW YORK (AP) — Slain at the hands of strangers or gunned down by loved ones. Massacred in small towns, in big cities, inside their own homes or outside in broad daylight. This year’s unrelenting bloodshed across the U.S. has led to the grimmest of milestones: The deadliest six months of mass killings recorded since at least 2006.

From Jan. 1 to June 30, the nation endured 28 mass killings, all but one of which involved guns. The death toll rose just about every week, a constant cycle of violence and grief.

Six months. 181 days. 28 mass killings. 140 victims. One country.

Source: ABC News
An Oklahoma mother killed her three children, including a 10-month-old, and then shot herself in an apparent triple murder-suicide, authorities said.

The Verdigris Police Department went to investigate a home on Thursday after they noticed fireworks erupting outside, the Oklahoma State Bureau of Investigation said in a press release.

Upon arrival, they discovered 39-year-old Brandy McCaslin armed and barricaded inside the Verdigris home, the bureau said.

Inside the home they discovered McCaslin shot dead of a self-inflicted gunshot wound and the bodies of her three children — a 10-month-old baby, a six-year-old and an eleven-year-old— all shot dead, according to the bureau.

US surpasses 400 mass shootings so far in 2023: National gun violence website
Source: ABC News

A shooting that erupted in a Houston park over the weekend that left a pregnant woman dead and four other people injured marked the 400th mass shooting in the United States in 2023, according to a national website that tracks firearm deaths and injuries.

The Houston incident was among six mass shootings that occurred on Saturday and early Sunday in cities across the nation, according to the Gun Violence Archive, which defines a mass shooting as a single event with four or more victims either injured or killed.

With a little over six months still to go in the year, the number of mass shootings is up 9% from 365 mass shootings that occurred as of this time in 2022 -- a year in which a total of 647 mass shootings unfolded, according to the Gun Violence Archive.

The Houston shooting happened just after 1 a.m. on Saturday at Margaret Jenkins Park in the southern part of the city as a birthday party was ending, police and witnesses said. Killed in the shooting was a 21-year-old woman, identified by her family as Autumn Vallian. Vallian's mother, Ebony Vallian, told ABC station KTRK in Houston, the shooting occurred as she and her daughter were attempting to leave the party when at least two people engaged in an argument, pulled guns and started shooting.
