Exclusive: Senior Ukrainian commander sees imminent 'turning point' in war

KHARKIV REGION, Ukraine, May 27 (Reuters) - Ukraine has a six-month window in which to seize the battlefield initiative from Russia and strengthen its hand for peace talks, a senior commander told Reuters, predicting a "turning point" was imminent after more ​than four years of war.

Russian forces have made grinding gains since their full-scale invasion of Ukraine in February 2022, but the advances have slowed this year and Ukrainian troops ‌are increasing pressure on the battlefield to try to push them back.

Brigadier General Andriy Biletsky, who commands Ukraine's Third Army Corps, one of Ukraine's most respected fighting forces, told Reuters in an interview that he believes Russia's army is exhausted and incapable of making major breakthroughs.

If Ukraine's military can build and maintain momentum over several months, it can gain the initiative along the frontline and push Russia to abandon its designs on the last part of the Donetsk region in eastern Ukraine that it ​does not yet occupy, he said.

"I believe the next six to nine months are a turning point," Biletsky said at an undisclosed underground location in the northeastern Kharkiv region.

Drones and robots are going to allow smaller nations to kick dumb countries stuck in the past ass. I wouldn't be shocked to see division of ground robots and at least half of a nations or two airforce entirely made up by automatism machines by 2030.

A lot of what makes them continue this war is the idea that they're so manly and men should die in war. f*ck how many die. This is partly driven by religion. Loserterianism is the fact that they gave up promoting science, tech and education. General stupidity. China now owns this and that is why they're so powerful.

At least 11 people have been killed in a wave of Russian strikes on Ukraine that set a major religious landmark in Kyiv on fire, President Volodymyr Zelensky says.

Four people were killed in attacks on the Ukrainian capital, while five rescue workers died trying to put out a fire caused by a strike on the north-eastern city of Kharkiv, officials said.

The 11th Century Dormition Cathedral was significantly damaged in what Zelensky called "one of the biggest Russian crimes against Christian culture today". Russia denied hitting the site.

Ukraine hits major oil terminal in Russia's St Petersburg

A major oil terminal in Russia's second city of St Petersburg in the north-west was struck overnight by Ukraine, President Volodymyr Zelensky has said.

He described it as key "infrastructure that generates revenue for Russia's war". Ukraine also said a major Russian naval base in the region was hit.

St Petersburg Governor Aleksandr Beglov said the city was under a "massive" drone attack, admitting the oil terminal was hit. He reported no casualties.

Ukraine has recently intensified its long-range drone attacks on Russia's critical energy infrastructure, causing widespread fuel shortages. Kyiv says nearly 43% of Russia's oil refining capacity has been "disabled" as a result.
