Death toll now 1,000+. One guy on the radio was saying it could reach tens of thousands. A lot of homes in the region are fragile, and just aren't built to withstand earthquakes.

Morocco Earthquake - Update
by Holly Large
September 9, 2023

Introduction:
At least 632 people have died following a powerful earthquake that struck Morocco’s High Atlas mountains late on Friday night.

The earthquake hit just after 23:00 local time and measured 7.2 on the Richter scale according to Morocco’s geophysical center, categorizing it as a major earthquake event. Approximately 10 to 20 such major earthquakes occur globally every year, but the relatively shallow depth of last night’s quake, at 18.5 kilometers (11.5 miles), has made it particularly devastating.

State television has reported significant building collapse and residents forced to evacuate their homes onto the streets, including in the nearby capital city of Marrakesh, according to Reuters. There were reports of a mosque collapsing in the historic city of Marrakesh, a UNESCO World Heritage site.

The Moroccan interior ministry has confirmed this morning that at least 632 people have died and 329 injured as a result of the earthquake, with a further 51 of those injured in critical condition.

Last night’s quake is the deadliest to strike Morocco since 2004, when a 6.5 magnitude earthquake occurred in the northern coastal city of Al Hoceima, killing over 600 people. The north of the country, including the High Atlas mountains, lies close to the boundary between the African and Eurasian tectonic plates, making it prone to seismic activity.

Attending church via zoom this last Sunday I was struck by a comment concerning the earthquake. The comment was the conclusion that “nothing could be done.” I didn’t openly challenge that conclusion, but it did strike me as incorrect. Of course, with so many good causes identified on a forum such as this, one can quickly encounter the problem of compassion fatigue. So many problems can quickly overcome one’s feeling of being able to do anything significant. That is one reason I do not ask for contributions for any particular problem, issue, or cause. Still, if one is motivated to assist in the case of this earthquake, here are some avenues of help to consider.

by Nolan Stout
September 11, 2023

Introduction:
WASHINGTON (Courthouse News) — Morocco hasn’t accepted the United States' offer for aid in the aftermath of a massive earthquake that killed thousands, but American diplomats are continuing to propose assistance.
Further extract:
Secretary of State Antony Blinken spoke with Morocco's foreign minister over the weekend to offer condolences and assistance.

"They also discussed how the United States can best support the government of Morocco's leadership of the humanitarian response to the tragedy, and the secretary and the foreign minister pledged to stay in close contact as the response efforts continue," State Department spokesperson Matt Miller said.

However, as of Monday, a plan for U.S. aid hadn't been finalized.
