Deadly Flooding in China Worsens as Rescues and Evacuations Intensify
August 4, 2023
Introduction:
Read more here: https://www.courthousenews.com/deadly- ... tensify/BEIJING (AP via Courthouse News) — Heavy rain and high water levels on rivers in northeastern China were threatening cities downstream on Friday, prompting the evacuation of thousands, although the country appears to have averted the worst effects of the typhoon season battering parts of east Asia.
Hebei province, which surrounds the capital Beijing on three sides, issued alerts for several of its cities. The province of Heilongjiang to the north was evacuating entire villages in anticipation of life-threatening deluges.
Rescue work remains underway. At least 20 people have been reported killed in Beijing’s outer suburbs and another 27 were missing following the weekend storms that quickly overwhelmed drainage systems.
Beijing usually has dry summers, but had a stretch of record-breaking heat this year that broke dramatically over the weekend with almost a week of constant rain and drizzle. Power was knocked out in areas, public transport and summer classes were suspended and citizens of the metropolis of more than 20 million people were told to stay home.
The nearby cities of Tianjin and Zhuozhou were also hit hard. Fire services aided by volunteer rescue groups searched apartment buildings and railway tunnels for stranded people, bringing hundreds to safety.
caltrek’s comment: Maybe this will help Chinese elites that there is still much to be gained by pursuing a course of cooperation with the West to combat global climate change. Hopefully, they will come to recognize that as a policy priority over getting heartburn over Taiwan’s preference for a Western style democracy.
Don't mourn, organize.

To know is essentially the same as not knowing. The only thing that occurs is the rearrangement of atoms in your brain.

Re: Extreme weather news and discussion
There was an old commercial in which the punchline went something like "you can pay me now, or you can pay me later." With respect to climate change, this is later.

Extreme Weather Hits Scandinavia, Flooding Parts of Norway

Introduction:
Read more here: https://www.courthousenews.com/extreme ... f-norway/COPENHAGEN, Denmark (Courthouse News) ¬— Unseasonable storms pounded Scandinavian countries over the past week, with Denmark recording hurricane-level winds on its northwestern shores, and Sweden and Norway experiencing massive amounts of rain and thunderstorms.
A river overflowed its banks near the Swedish town of Göteborg and sent a flood of water into the streets. At the ski area of Åre, rain poured down from the mountains, dragging bricks, rocks and soil with it into the center, where excavators were sent in to build dams and prevent the water from entering restaurants, public buildings and homes.
“It is a disaster. It was scary. What I saw last night and what I am seeing now is a disaster. Now we all have to help clean and restore everything to normal again,” said a resident and restaurant owner in Åre to Swedish broadcaster SVT on Tuesday.
In all three Scandinavian countries, storms have caused the closure of bridges, ferries and roads.
In Norway, landslides caused more than 1,700 people to evacuate their homes, and authorities battled flooding at the Braskereidfoss hydroelectric power plant. The widespread damage led Prime Minister Jonas Gohr Støre to promise citizens that the nation will increase its efforts to adapt to climate change and protect citizens, especially in the southeastern regions, against "wilder and wetter weather."
Don't mourn, organize.
