Wind farm's first turbine has record-breaking blades

The first turbine installed at a wind farm being built off the region's coast has set a UK record for the length of its blades, according to a power company.

ScottishPower Renewables (SPR) says the blades measure 115m (377ft), 7m (23ft) longer than any previously used offshore in the UK - and 10m (33ft) longer than a standard Premier League football pitch.

The turbine is the first of 95 to be put in place at the £4bn ($5.3bn) East Anglia Three wind farm, being built 69km (43 miles) off Suffolk.

SPR says a single revolution of one turbine will produce enough electricity to power a home for more than four days, charge about 1,700 mobile phones, or brew nearly 1,000 cups of tea.

The turbines stand about 262m (860ft) tall and have a rotor diameter of 236m (775ft). Work to install the foundations began last year.

UK approves 4GW of new offshore wind capacity

The UK government has granted planning permits to RWE and Masdar’s 3GW Dogger Bank South and SSE and RWE’s 1GW North Falls offshore wind farms.

The Dogger Bank South project consists of two offshore wind farms – Dogger Bank South West and Dogger Bank South East – and associated offshore and onshore infrastructure, including high-voltage electricity cables, substations, connections to the National Grid, and ancillary and temporary works.

The development consent order issued by the UK Energy Secretary allows up to 100 turbines at each site. Based on an estimated combined capacity of 3 GW, the projects could generate enough electricity to meet the average annual domestic electricity needs of around 3m typical UK homes.

Final turbine installed at Australia’s biggest wind farm

The final turbine has been installed at the biggest wind farm to be built in Australia to date, the 1.33 gigawatt (GW) Golden Plains facility in Victoria.

The milestone was announced by turbine supplier Vestas, which said that all 215 of its Enventus V162-6.2 MW turbines had now been erected. The project is expected to deliver around 9 per cent of Victoria’s energy needs when completed.

The Golden Plains wind farm has been built by Portugal-baed TagEnergy and is interesting because not only is it the biggest wind farm in Australia, and the southern hemisphere, it is possibly one of the last brave enough to start construction before landing any long-term off-take agreements.

TagEnergy is also building a 150 MW, 600 MWh battery energy storage system at the site, which also has landed a long term contract with Snowy Hydro.
