Hurricane Agatha makes landfall in Mexico
Source: CBS News
Hurricane Agatha made landfall at 4 p.m. CT Monday just west of Puerto Angel, Mexico, with maximum sustained winds of 105 mph, according to the U.S. National Hurricane Center.

This is the earliest a Category 2 storm has made landfall along Mexico's Pacific Coast.

The National Hurricane Center warned of "extremely dangerous" coastal flooding from storm surge and "life-threatening" hurricane-force winds in the state Oaxaca. Heavy rains are expected to continue over southern Mexico through Tuesday.

The U.S. National Hurricane Center said the storm was expected to drop 10 to 16 inches of rain on parts of Oaxaca, with isolated maximums of 20 inches, posing a danger for flash floods and mudslides.

Lol!

Well unless you live in the Caribbean I understand because you are getting the full power of a hurricane. Otherwise if you're living anywhere else you'll be chilling. The closest I ever came to questioning everything if it would stand a hurricane was when Michael, I believe, was off the coast of Florida annihilating the Bahamas.

If a real hurricane like that, category 5, ever pops up this season I will be right there with you freaking out especially if Miami, Fl doesn't get so lucky this time around and takes one head on. The worse thing would be consecutive category 5s.

For the first time in 25 years, August did not have a named storm - now September is starting off with a possible hurricane

Said hurricane will be a fish-storm though.

Typhoon Hinnamnor to Impact Taiwan Well into Sunday
September 3, 2022

Introduction:
TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — The radius of Typhoon Hinnamnor is likely to include parts of northeast Taiwan Saturday (Sept. 3) night as it expands and grows stronger into Sunday (Sept. 4) morning, according to the Central Weather Bureau (CWB).

The first typhoon to approach Taiwan in 2022 had arrived at a location 360 kilometers east-southeast of Taipei City as of 4 p.m. Saturday. It was moving north at a speed of 16 kph but was expected to hit northeast Taiwan later than first predicted, forecasters said.

The threat to New Taipei City, Keelung City, and Yilan County was likely to increase Saturday evening amid gusts of up to 209 kph and maximum sustained winds of 173 kph. Landslides in the mountainous Nanzhuang area of Miaoli County made roads completely impassable, while many shops in popular weekend tourist destinations such as Tamsui were closed, TTV reported.

Schools and offices were closed Saturday afternoon in Jianshi and Wufeng, two mountainous areas of Hsinchu County, and most of the day in four districts of New Taipei City, Ruifang, Pingxi, Shuangxi and Gongliao. Taoyuan City’s Fuxing District said its offices and schools would remain closed Sunday.

Typhoon Batters South Korea, Preparations Minimize Casualties
by Kim Tong-Hyung
September 6, 2022

Introduction:
SEOUL, South Korea (AP via Courthouse News) — The most powerful typhoon to hit South Korea in years killed at least three people, dumped a meter (3 feet) of rain, destroyed roads and felled power lines on Tuesday. The death toll could have been higher if not for proactive evacuations and school closures, officials said.

There was also greater public awareness about the storm and its risks. Typhoon Hinnamnor made impact just weeks after heavy rain around the capital, Seoul, caused flooding that killed at least 14 people.

Government officials put the nation on high alert for days as Hinnamnor approached, warning of potentially historic destruction and putting in motion life-saving measures.

After grazing the resort island of Jeju and hitting the mainland near the port city of Busan, Hinnamnor weakened as it blew into waters between the Korean Peninsula and Japan.

South Korea’s weather agency said Hinnamnor was over the open sea 280 kilometers (173 miles) northeast of Ulleung island with winds weakened to 115 kilometers (71 miles) per hour on Tuesday afternoon. It was expected to be downgraded to a tropical storm by night as it moves northeast between Russia and the northern Japanese island of Hokkaido, the agency said.

Monster Typhoon Could Bring ‘Unprecedented Strong Winds’
by Takuya Miyano
September 17, 2022

Introduction:
(Asahi Shimbun) The Japan Meteorological Agency on Sept. 17 called for the highest level of caution, warning that a large and powerful typhoon approaching southern islands could bring “unprecedented strong winds” to a large part of Japan.

JMA officials told an 11 a.m. news conference a special warning may be issued in the evening, citing fierce winds, large waves and high tide surges for Kagoshima Prefecture and the northern Kyushu region as well as a special warning for heavy rain for the southern main island of Kyushu.

Officials also said linear rainbands could hit the Amami islands of Kagoshima and southern Kyushu from the evening of Sept. 17 through the following morning, raising the danger level for flooding and landslides.

If a special warning for Kyushu is issued, it would be the first ever for the region due to a typhoon. Special warnings were issued in 2014 for Miyakojima island and the main Okinawa island and again for the Okinawa region two years later.

More on the typhoon hitting Japan:

Japan Issues Special Typhoon Warning for Kagoshima Prefecture
September 17, 2022

Conclusion:
(Kyoto News) Such emergency warnings are only issued when an extraordinary natural phenomenon occurring once in a few decades is predicted in the country. It is the first such alert for areas apart from Okinawa Prefecture.

The typhoon, packing winds of up to 198 kilometers per hour with maximum gusts of 270 kph, is forecast to bring heavy rain to various parts of Japan during the three-day weekend through Monday.

The (Japanese weather) agency said southern Kyushu could receive up to 500 millimeters of rain in the 24 hours to 6 a.m. Sunday, while the Shikoku and Tokai regions in western and central Japan could see up to 300 mm of rainfall.

Some operators of trains and retail chains already decided to suspend part of their services in the Kyushu region on Sunday.

Powerful typhoon pounds southern Japan; thousands evacuated
Source: AP

By MARI YAMAGUCHI
TOKYO (AP) — A powerful typhoon slammed ashore in southern Japan on Sunday as it pounded the region with strong winds and heavy rain, causing blackouts, paralyzing ground and air transportation and prompting the evacuation of thousands of people.

The Japan Meteorological Agency said Typhoon Nanmadol was heading north after making landfall in Kagoshima city on Japan’s southern main island of Kyushu. It was packing maximum winds of 162 kilometers (101 miles) per hour, and is forecast to reach Tokyo on Tuesday.

The weather agency predicted as much as 50 centimeters (20 inches) of rainfall by Monday evening and warned of flooding and landslides. It also alerted residents in the affected areas of “unprecedented” levels of powerful winds and waves, urging them to evacuate early.

Storm and high wave warnings were in effect in Kagoshima, where residents were told to stay inside stable buildings on second floor or higher, if it’s deemed a safer option than going to evacuation centers.

by Andrew Freedman
Updated September 18, 2022

Introduction:
(Axios) An intensifying Hurricane Fiona is bringing heavy rains, high winds and power outages to Puerto Rico.

The big picture: The storm threatens to dump more than two feet of rain in Puerto Rico, while bringing hurricane-force winds. These winds are already starting to take out large parts of the island's fragile electricity grid.

• As of 11 a.m. ET, Fiona was located about 50 miles south of Ponce, Puerto Rico, and was moving west-northwest at 8 mph. Its maximum sustained winds were clocking in at 80 mph. (This was an increase in wind speed of 10 mph compared to the previous update at 8 a.m.)

• The storm is a Category 1 hurricane and is expected to remain so through landfall in Puerto Rico later today.

• President Biden has already declared a federal disaster for Puerto Rico, mobilizing the delivery of aid to the island.
