Although landfall is not expected, #Ialy is passing closer to the coast of Kenya than any previous tropical storm in the historical record whilst on its unusual track northwards.

NOAA's outlook is, not surprisingly, calling for a very busy season. 17-25 named storms, 8-13 hurricanes, 4-7 majors. ACE 150%-245% of normal. It was interesting that this wasn't the #1 ACE forecast ever: 2010 had that honor. ACE range is basically "busy" to "record apocalyptic".

Tropical Depression 01W has formed in the WPAC, marking the 5th latest start on record for the Basin.

Strengthening to typhoon status is expected, with a 75 kn (80 mph) peak intensity expected south of the Ryukyu Islands.

The cyclone on Sunday is going to be a disaster for Bangladesh and possibly West Bengal. Even the IMD is saying a 10-13 feet tidal surge is coming into the region

Fortunately, the Sunderbans are not as heavily populated as the Ganges Delta, or else we could have been facing a 1985 cyclone scenario
