Read more here: https://www.motherjones.com/politics/2 ... -package/(Mother Jones) The role of religion in American politics has changed profoundly since fundamentalist preacher Jerry Falwell and conservative direct-mail mogul Paul Weyrich co-founded the Moral Majority in 1979. Back then, the failure of Christians to appreciate their power at the ballot box over issues they saw as challenging their faith—abortion topped the list, but also prayer in schools, homosexuality, and women’s rights—was seen as an opportunity to galvanize a voting bloc for conservatives. The Moral Majority’s support of candidates who would represent those interests as elected officials unleashed a powerful resource in the Republican Party. The Moral Majority disbanded in 1989, but by then many offshoots had appeared: the Christian Coalition, Focus on the Family, and the Family Research Council. Evangelical and Christian voters had largely made the Republican Party their home.
Donald Trump tapped into and exploited, and was exploited by, this long history of disaffected voters. In him, a radical-right strain found its voice. Some call themselves “Christian nationalists” while others reject that label, but the movement, by any name, has a distinctly different character from your grandmother’s Moral Majority.
Our November+December issue investigates the Christian nationalist movement that aspires to take over government at all levels, from school boards and state legislatures to Congress and the Supreme Court. Its prominent influencers, ties to militias, and pervasiveness across civil society reveal a radical movement hiding in plain sight. Read the whole package here:

Trump Media Stock Trade is Temporarily Halted After Sudden Plunge in DJT Shares

Read more here: https://www.cbsnews.com/news/djt-stock ... -plunge/(CBS) Trump Media & Technology Group, whose stock trades under the ticker DJT — the same as former President Donald Trump's initials — was briefly halted on Wall Street Tuesday after the stock suddenly plunged.
The pause occurred at 2:42 p.m. Eastern Time, with trading resuming about five minutes later, according to the New York Stock Exchange. Trading was temporarily suspended after a mechanism was triggered when stocks exhibit unusual volatility.
DJT shares had climbed earlier on Tuesday, reaching an intraday high of $33.85 a share, representing a 13% gain. But the stock plummeted in the afternoon, triggering the halt. Trump Media's stock price continued to sink after the pause was lifted closed at $27.06, down $2.89, or 9.6%, on the day.
The shares traded higher on Wednesday morning, gaining 84 cents, or 3.1%, to $27.90.
Tuesday's downdraft erased some of the recent gains that had helped lift Trump Media from a September 24 low. The shares have been seen as a proxy for Trump's chances of winning the November 5 presidential election, with DJT swinging upwards when his odds appear to improve. In recent days, two prediction markets have switched to favoring Trump after previously giving Vice President Kamala Harris a better chance of winning.
Don't mourn, organize.

The Increasingly Bizarre — and Ominous — Home Stretch of Trump’s 2024 Campaign

Read more here: https://www.vox.com/politics/378299/tr ... own-hall(Vox) Here is a short and incomplete list of things that former President Donald Trump has done this week:
(See linked article for list)
Throughout these events, Trump has come off as (alternately) a buffoon and a would-be dictator. One minute, you’re laughing at his campy dance moves and Hindenburg car rants, the next you’re worrying that he really might try to send troops after American citizens.
Yet the two Trumps, the clown and the menace, are intimately tied together: The absurdity helps normalize his dangerousness.
For his biggest supporters, the schtick helps generate a sense of joy in transgression. For non-MAGA Republicans, it helps them feel comfortable ignoring what makes Trump extraordinary in favor of traditional grubby partisanship. For many of Trump’s opponents, it makes him seem like something we don’t have to worry about all the time — even when we really do. His absurdity works to make a horrifying reality our reality, something assimilable into the mental frames that we use to get through the day
…
In late 2016, the Atlantic published a campaign trail dispatch by Salena Zito, a conservative reporter, exploring Trump’s appeal to his voters. The piece was forgettable save one line, a description of Trump’s relationship to his fans that has been quoted endlessly for the past eight years: “The press takes him literally, but not seriously; his supporters take him seriously, but not literally.”
