In Los Angeles, Breakthrough Infections Are Now 30% Of All New Covid Cases Amid Delta Surge
https://deadline.com/2021/08/los-angele ... 234818477/
In March 2021, when Americans first began hearing about the Delta variant of Covid-19, breakthrough infections among fully-vaccinated Angelenos accounted for just 2% of that month’s case total. By June, when Delta accounted for 50% of all variants in Los Angeles, breakthrough infections among fully-vaccinated residents had risen to 20% of all identified cases. In late July, county officials reported that the Delta variant had overwhelmed all others, accounting for more than 90% of all positive tests analyzed for variants. As a result, the ratio of breakthrough cases increased to 30%, local health officials announced today.

The F.D.A. is aiming to give full approval to Pfizer's Covid vaccine on Monday.
Source: New York Times
The Food and Drug Administration is pushing to approve Pfizer-BioNTech’s two-dose Covid-19 vaccine on Monday, further expediting an earlier timeline for licensing the shot, according to people familiar with the agency’s planning. Regulators were working to finish the process by Friday but were still working through a substantial amount of paperwork and negotiation with the company.

The people familiar with the planning, who were not authorized to speak publicly about it, cautioned that the approval might slide beyond Monday if some components of the review need more time.An F.D.A. spokeswoman declined to comment. The agency had recently set an unofficial deadline for approval of around Labor Day. The approval is expected to pave the way for a series of vaccination requirements by public and private organizations who were awaiting firmer regulatory backing before implementing mandates.

Federal and state health officials are also hoping that an approved vaccine will draw interest from some Americans who have been hesitant to take one that was only authorized for emergency use, a phenomenon suggested by recent polling. Some universities and hospitals are expected to mandate inoculation once a vaccine is fully approved. The Pentagon earlier this month said it plans to make Covid vaccinations mandatory for the country’s 1.3 million active-duty troops “no later” than the middle of next month, or sooner if the F.D.A. acts earlier.

The timing of the approval could result in an uncomfortable messaging problem for the Biden administration, which on Wednesday announced that fully vaccinated people should prepare to get booster shots eight months after they received second doses. Approving the vaccine and encouraging boosters at the same time may suggest to some that the vaccine as licensed is inadequate without an extra shot.

School Districts Defy Texas Governor Greg Abbott’s Ban on Mask Mandates – and Win in Court
by Tom Philbot
August 20, 2021

https://www.motherjones.com/politics/20 ... n-for-now/

Introduction:
(Mother Jones) While Texas Gov. Greg Abbott rides out a case of COVID-19 in quarantine, one of his prized policies crumbled under the pressure of various legal challenges: his push to prevent schools from imposing mask mandates.

Back in July, Abbott released an executive order banning any government agency, including school districts, from requiring masks to enter public buildings. As the Delta variant of the coronavirus ripped through the state, dozens of cities, counties, and school districts issued mask mandates anyway, defying the governor. On Thursday—shortly after the Texas Supreme Court temporarily struck down Abbott’s order on a technicality—the Texas Education Agency announced it would stop enforcing the rule for school districts, because of the “ongoing litigation” it had inspired.

Abbott can’t be accused of hypocrisy regarding his anti-mask position. In the days leading up to the fully vaccinated governor’s breakthrough case, he “commemorated the anniversary of India’s independence with a crowd in his office,” “mingled with hundreds of Republican supporters at a packed campaign event,” and “posed with the brother of the famed guitarist Stevie Ray Vaughan,” the New York Times reported. Neither Abbott nor most of the people he cavorted with wore masks.
While Abbott finally relented from throwing up obstacles to elected school district board members in their efforts to curb the pandemic, the state’s Lieutenant Governor sought to blame the victims, while ignoring the problem of the legacy of structural racism in Texas:

Texas Lt. Gov. Dan Patrick Went on Fox News to Blame the COVID Surge on Black People
by Edwin Rios
August 20, 2021

https://www.motherjones.com/politics/20 ... le-covid/

Extract:
“The Democrats like to blame Republicans” for the spread of the virus, (Texas Lieutenant Governor Dan) Patrick told Fox’s Laura Ingraham. “Well, the biggest group in most states are African Americans who have not been vaccinated. The last time I checked, over 90 percent of them voted for Democrats…They’re doing nothing for the African American community that has a significant high number of unvaccinated people, so they need to address that.”
Ummm…aren’t some of those elected school board officials Democrats?
Moreover:
…Data from the Texas Department of State Health Services shows that white Texans, who make up 41 percent of the state’s residents and 38 percent of those fully vaccinated, account for roughly 32 percent of infections and 42 percent of deaths. Meanwhile, state data shows that …Black residents account for 12 percent of the state’s population but 16 percent of infections; Latinx residents account for 40 percent of residents but 46 percent of deaths. That data reinforces the fact that these communities of color continue to bear the brunt of the pandemic...

But (when Patrick)…goes on Fox News and says that Republicans “respect the fact that if people don’t want to get the vaccination, we’re not going to force it on them. That’s their individual right,” he’s ignoring the fact that individualism only makes it more difficult to overcome a pandemic that affects everyone. Instead, Patrick concocts a familiar racist narrative: that irresponsible Black Democrats are to blame. In doing so, he disregards the well-documented factors that just might explain why just 8 percent of Black residents and 32 percent of Latinx residents are fully vaccinated.

As I’ve previously reported, the social conditions that Black and Latinx residents find themselves in—their ability to get medical care, their working conditions as essential workers, their housing situations, among others—all influence their access to and attitudes toward vaccination. But Patrick doesn’t want to talk about the legacies of structural racism or the understandable mistrust that communities of color have for the US medical establishment.
Don't mourn, organize.

Florida's COVID deaths climb as children lead state in positivity rate
Source: Tampa Bay Times

The state reports 1,486 deaths and 150,118 new coronavirus infections as the pandemic starts to affect young Floridians.

Florida’s pandemic is getting deadlier and infecting more children.

The state reported 1,486 deaths, a 141 percent increase from two weeks ago. And it’s the most deaths since Feb. 10, as federal data shows Florida approaching the weekly death toll last seen this past winter.

One out of every four COVID-19 infections recorded by the state in the most recent seven-day period were 19 or younger.

Younger Floridians are also testing positive at a higher rate than other age groups: Children 12 and under have a positivity rate of 23 percent and ages 12-19 have a positivity rate of 25 percent.

Montana only state to ban vaccine requirements for employees
Source: ABC News
While many large companies across the U.S. have announced that COVID-19 vaccines will be required for their employees to return to work in-person, there is one state where such requirements are banned: Montana.

Under a new law passed by the state’s Republican-controlled Legislature earlier this year, requiring vaccines as a condition for employment is deemed “discrimination” and a violation of the state’s human rights laws.

Montana is the only state in the U.S. with a law like this for private employers, said Hemi Tewarson, executive director of the National Academy for State Health Policy.

The law has raised concern among employers across the state as Montana struggles with a rise in COVID-19 cases that is once again straining the state's health care system.

At the rate things are going, I don't think it's impossible that Florida could approach 100k dead alone by EOY. (Based on excess deaths.) However, probably still not likely but things are total shit there.

No surprise, the Trumpists/QAnon/Antivaxxers in the States are totally losing the plot. Hopefully, delta clears out enough of these morons to dilute their voting power going forward. The Republicans have totally fucked themselves for 2024 as they are wiping out their own voters at this point...

The post about comments reminded me about one of my favorite threads on the old forum, the one where Future Timeline was mentioned in the Daily Mail way back around 2013. Really should resurrect that one.

Desperate Texas Doctors Turn to Antibody Treatments to Slow COVID-19 Hospitalizations
by Karen Brooks Harper
August 23, 2021

https://www.alternet.org/2021/08/texas-doctors/

Introduction:
(The Texas Tribune via Alternet) "Desperate Texas doctors turn to antibody treatments to slow down surging COVID-19 hospitalizations" was first published by The Texas Tribune, a nonprofit, nonpartisan media organization that informs Texans — and engages with them — about public policy, politics, government and statewide issues.

What surprised Texas retiree Kathy Hardman most was not that she got COVID-19 five months after being fully vaccinated.

And it was not even that she qualified to receive an increasingly popular — yet still largely unfamiliar — experimental treatment that had been prescribed to some of the most powerful people in the country.

What shocked the 66-year-old grandmother of four was that the monoclonal antibody infusion therapy, estimated to decrease chances of hospitalization by up to 70%, was available to her at her hometown hospital in Mount Pleasant, a community of 15,000 in rural Northeast Texas.
Disclosure:
The University of Texas at Austin has been a financial supporter of The Texas Tribune, a nonprofit, nonpartisan news organization that is funded in part by donations from members, foundations and corporate sponsors.

Pentagon to mandate COVID-19 vaccine for military
Source: The Hill
The U.S. military will move to mandate the COVID-19 vaccine for all service members now that the Pfizer vaccine has full approval from the Food and Drug Administration (FDA), the Pentagon’s top spokesperson announced Monday.

The Defense Department is preparing “guidance to the force” to make the vaccine mandatory, with a timeline to be provided in the coming days, Pentagon press secretary John Kirby told reporters.

The FDA earlier on Monday granted the Pfizer-BioNTech COVID-19 vaccine full approval, a move that’s expected to boost vaccinations and spark more mandates nationwide.

Louisiana reports record number of COVID deaths
Source: CBS News
Louisiana reported 139 coronavirus-related deaths on Tuesday – the state's highest reported number of deaths in a single day since the pandemic began, the Louisiana Department of Health tweeted. The previous record, 129 deaths, was reported on April 14, 2020.

"Each death is a terrible loss, even more so because we know most COVID deaths can now be prevented through safe and effective vaccines," Louisiana Governor John Bel Edwards tweeted.

The state's health department reported 3,814 new cases of the virus Tuesday, noting an increase across all age groups within the state. The largest percentage increase of cases were among those aged 5 to 17.

As of Tuesday, 2,856 patients are hospitalized with COVID-19 in Louisiana, and 480 patients are on ventilators. Unvaccinated peopled accounted for 91% of current COVID hospitalizations. The state's cumulative COVID-19 death toll surpassed 12,000 on Tuesday, the state's health department tweeted. Only 11.14% of intensive care unit beds are available statewide, according to data from the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services.

Fauci says US could have 'good control' over COVID-19 by spring of 2022
Source: KGTV ABC San Diego
Dr. Anthony Fauci, a top White House medical adviser and the director of the National Institutes for Allergies and Infectious Diseases, told CNN Monday night that he believes the U.S. could have "some return to normalcy" from the pandemic by the spring of 2022.

When asked what "control" over the pandemic looked like, Fauci said it was imperative to get more people vaccinated. "If we get the people who are unvaccinated now, that 90 million people, get them vaccinated, I think we can get a degree of overall blanket protection of the community," Fauci said.

Earlier in the day, during his appearance on NPR, Fauci noted that those who remain unvaccinated risk delaying the U.S.'s return to normalcy, noting that the continued spread of the virus could lead to more mutant strains like the delta variant. "You can't have 90 million people who are eligible to be vaccinated who are not vaccinated and expect that you can make a good prediction about where we're going to be," Fauci said. "When you have people unvaccinated to the extent that they are unvaccinated, you have the possibility of the virus continuing to circulate, mutating, forming more variants and getting us back into another situation similar to or worse than delta."

Fauci added that he expects the winter months to be "complicated" as seasonal viruses like influenza and respiratory syncytial virus may rise to prominence.

Oregon governor announces outdoor mask mandate
Source: Axios
Oregon Gov. Kate Brown (D) on Tuesday announced a new statewide outdoor mask mandate requiring people to wear masks in most outdoor settings regardless of vaccination status.

State of play: Starting Friday, Oregonians will be required to wear masks outdoors when physical distancing is not possible. While the mandate does not apply to outdoor gatherings in private residences, masks are "strongly recommended" when people from different households cannot remain socially distanced.
