The Louisiana Department of Health reports the patient who had been hospitalized with the first human case of highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI), or H5N1, in Louisiana and the U.S. has died. The patient was over the age of 65 and was reported to have underlying medical conditions. The patient contracted H5N1 after exposure to a combination of a non-commercial backyard flock and wild birds.

Bird flu cases surge as new year begins

Jan 15, 2025

The pace of the spread of highly pathogenic bird flu in Japan has accelerated since the beginning of 2025, sparking concerns over the negative impact on household budgets, such as a spike in egg prices.

So far in January, as many as 13 bird flu cases have been confirmed at chicken farms across the country, including multiple cases in the city of Tokoname, Aichi Prefecture, and the most recent outbreak reported by the Chiba Prefectural Government on Wednesday.

"Bird flu is apparently widespread," agriculture minister Taku Eto said during a meeting to discuss countermeasures at his ministry on Tuesday.

The current increasing pace of infections suggests that the number of cases this month will top the current worst January record of 19 marked in the 2022-2023 season, experts said.

To curb the spread, the ministry has been asking poultry farmers to take strict hygiene control measures and report to local authorities as soon as possible if they see something wrong with their chickens.

Cull after more bird flu cases identified on farms

Outbreaks of bird flu have been confirmed at poultry farms in East Yorkshire and in Lincolnshire.

The Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (Defra) said all birds at a premises near Pocklington and at another near Mablethorpe, East Lindsey, would be humanely culled as a result.

A protection zone of almost two miles (3km) and an eight-mile (10km) surveillance zone had also been declared around the sites, Defra added.

The measures would restrict the movement of birds, meat and eggs in the area, a spokesperson said.

U.S. pays $590 million to Moderna to speed up development of bird flu vaccine

Source: NPR

January 18, 2025 3:06 PM ET

The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services announced it will award $590 million to Moderna to accelerate the development of influenza vaccines, including to protect against bird flu.

"Accelerating the development of new vaccines will allow us to stay ahead and ensure that Americans have the tools they need to stay safe," outgoing HHS Secretary Xavier Becerra said in a statement on Friday.

The money will go to Moderna, the Massachusetts-based pharmaceutical company that previously developed a COVID-19 vaccine. Since 2023, Moderna has been working to create a "pandemic influenza vaccine" which would help protect against certain viruses, including the H5N1 bird flu.

The new funds build on the $176 million that HHS gave to Moderna last July. On Friday, Moderna said the additional funding will help pay for late-stage development, licensure of the vaccines and expanding clinical studies for additional subtypes of pandemic influenza to prevent other potential public health emergencies.

Bird flu prevention zone imposed across England

25 January 2025

A bird flu prevention zone enforcing strict hygiene standards around domesticated birds has been declared for the whole of England.

A rising number of cases and risk avian influenza poses to wild birds led to the decision, the government said.

Even stricter measures, requiring all birds to be placed in enclosures, are being enforced in some counties in eastern England.

The risk to humans remains low, with chicken and eggs safe to eat if properly cooked, the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (Defra) said.

The Avian Influenza Prevention Zone (AIPZ) across England applies to all bird keepers, whether they have pets or a commercial flock.
