So this guy is saying that everyone was basically fighting to do the right thing, with different approaches and therefore different conclusions? Damn

To know is essentially the same as not knowing. The only thing that occurs is the rearrangement of atoms in your brain.

Let's assume that the board was right in that the ONLY MORAL ACTION would be "DESTROY THE COMPANY." IMAGINE what circumstances would lead to that conclusion. IMAGINE. That's what's scary imofirestar464 wrote: ↑Mon Nov 20, 2023 6:16 pm So this guy is saying that everyone was basically fighting to do the right thing, with different approaches and therefore different conclusions? My gut feeling is that Sam won't return, and that it's probably too late to save OpenAI, but I hope I'm wrong. It's completely crazy what's happened in the space of three days. A rollercoaster of emotions.
I've been racing to finish some coding with GPT-4 in case it shuts down, an alarming possibility given the number of employees threatening to leave.
Maybe things will turn out better with Microsoft in the long run, but OpenAI has (had?) a certain charm and magic about it, with Sam's exuberant leadership forming part of that. If this really is the end, I'm going to miss following the company and its progress.

Re: OpenAI News & Discussions
They fired him for something they could've talked to him about. Sounds silly to me. Couldn't they try good ol' communication?
A counterpoint, however, would be that maybe they've tried already. Not to mention perhaps the project was very important- so much so that Sam giving the project to two different people would be disastrous. Or that he did much more than just "spread contradictory stuff" about someone. Maybe he tried to set that person up, IDK. Doesn't sound like a Sam thing to do though. Can probably rule that possibility out.
Sounds like Sutskever made an "honest mistake," albeit a REALLY large one. Maybe he reversed course after thinking about it some more or learning about stuff he didn't know before. I mean, people say Ilya is honest, but not sure about the others. Maybe it was him realizing things about the others.
No one knows though.

Re: OpenAI News & Discussions
1. "Altman was said to have given two people at OpenAI the same project."
2. "Altman allegedly gave two board members different opinions about a member of personnel."
Neither of these seem like fire able offenses in the first place. Seem relatively minor even compared to other CEOs and should easily be something which could've been addressed. If OAI employees are claiming this isn't about safety, (evidence below cast doubts on that) then one must assume that the so called EAs are just deliberately trying to destroy the company, which honestly should land them in prison. They can't even stick to a single reason as to why, and the above being a big "miscommunication issue with the board" is strait up meme worthy. It's almost like they don't even give a damn so long as OAI burns.

OpenAI’s Board Approached Anthropic About Merger
(theinformation)
Yeah, the idea that they achieved AGI or something very close to it recently considering Sam's comments seems more and more likely to me. Anthropic is all about safety, so kicking out Sam, merging the companies and placing heavy alignment on whatever they have would be in accordance with that idea. I do find it kind of amusing that we'd have to merge the threads as well if this succeeded.

OpenAI’s Board Approached Anthropic About Merger
(theinformation)
------------------------------------------------------------OpenAI’s board of directors approached Dario Amodei, the co-founder and CEO of rival large-language model developer Anthropic, about a potential merger of the two companies, said a person with direct knowledge. The approach came after OpenAI’s board had fired CEO Sam Altman on Friday and was part of an effort by OpenAI to persuade Amodei to replace Altman as CEO, the person said.
